Orlando Magic: Masking Its Fear or Rising to the Top?

As the Orlando Magic knocked off the Cleveland Cavaliers in 6 games, they now turn their attention to facing the Los Angeles Lakers. In trying to prepare for the daunting task of shutting down the Lakers, they are looking at every possible scenario. The most talked about scenario is bringing back an All-Star point guard: Jameer Nelson.

I can understand why they would want to do this: he was the leading scorer in Orlando's 106-103 victory against the Lakers on December the 20th and once again in a 109-103 victory. In those respective games, Nelson paced the way for the Magic with 27 and 28 point performances.

However, Nelson is the same player that went down on February 2nd with a supposedly season ending injury, a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He is the same player that received 8 anchors when the normal for the injury is 4. The Magic is either trying to mask their fear or rise to the occasion. Either way, they must understand 3 things.

1) This isn't the regular season.

There are times when the postseason can emulate the regular season, but many times the teams that have made it to the Finals have fixed their problems that caused them to lose in previous match ups. Therefore, the times the Lakers lost to the Magic are pointless. The same key ingredients that led to their victory in the regular season are moot talking point to make them believe they have to do something more to win because they are missing the key ingredient.

The Magic have been superb. They are clicking on all cylinders. Don't tweak something that isn't broken because you think that the bully might want to break it. Let him try to break it before you go tweak it. That way you'll know what the problem is before you go engineering a new, injured solution.

2) They haven't been there before. (Experience)

Experience can win championships. It keeps players cool and poised. They never lose sight of the goal. They lose a game at home and they come back to win the next two games. The pressure is on the Magic, but they shouldn't panic. They should continue to do what they have done to find success. Use the pick and roll. Use every player. Find Dwight "Superman" Howard in the paint. And, 'NEVER ' think for one second that what they had to get them to the Finals isn't good enough to win it all.

3) Kobe Bryant

The Black Mamba is a different person in the Finals. He's not LeBron James. More times than not, he will make the game winning shot to punish you and to win the Finals. He hungrier for this ring without Shaq more than the entire Magic roster. That is not to slight them, but it is to indicate how much he really wants it. Boston stopped him and the Lakers last year because they were tougher than the Lakers. This entire season Kobe and the Lakers have been out to prove that this team isn't the same team that lost in the Finals last year.

If the Magic want to win, they better stop Kobe from scoring and passing because that's the only chance they have. They have to stop him from getting his and allowing his teammates to get theirs through his assists.

Anyhow, it appears that Orlando is trying to do everything conceivably possible but they are forgetting that this isn't the regular season and that Nelson isn't the same player from 4 months ago. Let Nelson come back next season at 100%. Let the Magic roster that has fought so hard in the playoffs remain the same at its core. Though almost impossible, suffocate Kobe's entire game and let the other Lakers beat you.

It's going to be one hell of an NBA Finals.

Another great Bravesgirl85, I pretty much enjoy your articles..

I don't think Orlando should change anything in their roster, they beat not only the Cav's but Boston as well.

One thing I completly agree on is that it will be on Mofo Hell of a Final.

I can't wait. I talked to H4H, as we usually do when the playoffs start, and I agree when he said that Game 1 will be the deciding factor. The Magic and Lakers will not disappoint.

The Lakers have been in this situation before. Think about last year. They lost both games (by a a pretty big margin [13 and 19 point wins) against the Celtics. However, the Lakers took it to them and changed their game plan, studied the Celtics' defense and offense during their games in the regular season and wondered how they were going to turn those losses against Boston into wins where they mattered the most: the NBA Finals. And you know what? It did change for the L.A./Boston series. You could tell that the Lakers knew the Celtics better than they did before, and they took advantage of that. However, the Celtics' roster was just too much for L.A. Not only did Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett come up big, but so did guys off the bench, i.e. James Posey, Eddie House...

I feel that this is almost the exact same situation, only the Lakers have a better chemistry than they did last year. Kobe knows Pau, and Pau knows the team better (when a guy as smart as Pau Gasol knows a team with this much talent, it's always more of an advantage), you have Bynum in the lineup, Ariza's got one more year of experience (and as a 23 year old and a great finisher, one more year won't hurt), and the Lakers are coming into the NBA finals as a team who lost the previous NBA finals. This means that they have more of a will to win than last year. And I think we all know how much Kobe FINALLY wanted a ring (without Shaq).

Orlando is going to be tough, with guys like Dwight Howard (who I have no clue how he's going to be defended by the Lakers, but I'm sure they'll find a way), Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkogulu, etc. However, I think that it there's any team in the NBA that could stop the Magic in the playoffs right now, it'd be L.A. (whether or not they have Jameer Nelson).

I think Jameer Nelson is a talented player.

But why mess something when it isn't broken, as you said. The Magic are exceeding expectations but why should they deny "skip to my lou" a place in the finals when he has been playing. Let Nelson get his rest for next season I completely agree.

L.A will probably win it, with Kobe wanting it for his legacy and to prove he is the best there is. but Orlando will make L.A play hard for it.

Nelson's presence will not only work magic on the dynamic between his teammates, but the Lakers will need to constantly readjust to strike their own balance on the court. I don't know that Jameer is 100%, but just contributing by moving the ball will certainly spice things up. He's smooth and sassy and has more character in his pinky finger than Kobe has in his entire ego-inflated body. Johnson is fine but anything that keeps Reddick off the court is a major plus. Alston has been phenomenal, and certainly will continue to dominate against the Lakers.

But let's be real, we know the Magic (especially Dwight) will get demoralized by non-calls and bad calls, and Jameer can help turn this around. Call me Ms. Cleo, but I see the Lakers throwing their bodies all over the ground looking for calls more than the Pistons or a bad soccer team. This can get old fast. Jammeer and Dwight are super tight, and they play on the level with eachother. All of the new super-talent that has emerged on the team recently (Lee, Alston, Peaches, Johnson) has made the team an explosive force. Jameer's influence just makes it a little less volitale, that's all.

With or without Jameer, the Lakers and Kobe are going down. Nothing the refs or Stern or Kobe or Gasol can do will stop them. LA is so very passe. Were in a new era, one that no longer revels in its excesses, exhonorating its plasticity. The Orlando team is solid and has substance, and in in the age of transparency and keeping it real, the Lakers are bankrupt. Orlando is a positive team. They let it be known on the court, to be sure, but they leave it there and they don't play dirty. The Lakers have so much petty beef its like a telenovella out there. I don't see any Orlando players being accused of raping women and forking over diamonds to their wives in repentance. I don't see the Magic telling eachother to lick one another's balls or even delivering any pathetic rhymes in public. I don't see players on the Magic speaking badly about their previous coaches because they refused to be their bitches. Kobe and Labron aren't getting Nike puppets next season, they'll have Bratz dolls. Orlando puts the team back in team. They'll make the Lakers wish they were never born.

I get that you want the Magic to win, but why are you looking at the Finals as a show of character beyond the game? It is the L.A. basketball team v. the Orlando basketball team. It is not what their respective cities represent themselves as.

haha, thanks for reading my writings. I did work it out then, but I was wondering why AF #2 was focusing on character and how each Finals' city defined themselves. I always get minused. in the words of george lopez, "I can't do nuthing right."
