About the Author

Romiezzo
My name's Romi Ezzo and I'm a huge sports fan. My favorite thing in the world is baseball, and hopefully, I can become someone involved in sports, whether it's being a sports writer, an analyst, a commentator, or maybe just sticking around here at ArmchairGM editing stuff, and commenting every once in a while. Playing sports is what gets me going, and when I feel like I don't have the energy to actually play baseball, basketball, soccer (football), or American football, I'll just play some MVP, NBA Live, Winning 11, or Madden. My favorite baseball player is Derek Jeter (who I idolized growing up... yes, even though I'm a Red Sox fan), with Dustin Pedroia, Ichiro, and Jacoby Ellsbury in a close 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I cannot choose a favorite basketball player (it seems like I have a different one each season). I like Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Hedo Turkoglu, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, and Dwyane Wade... just to name a few. I'm a New England fan, which means that I love the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins. I'm glad that I can talk sports to a bunch of people that have the same in common that I do.

Keep Armchair GM alive! :)

One of the NBA's Most Underrated Players: Al Jefferson

I was reading an article in SLAM magazine about this, and it got me thinking about how underrated and unknown this man is.

p1_jefferson-ap.jpg

This past summer, the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off one of the biggest trades in their respective teams' recent histories. Many people believed that Danny Ainge pulled a fast one on his old teammate, Kevin McHale, by acquiring Kevin Garnett, a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame (in his prime), in exchange for Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 first round draft pick (top three protected), a return of Minnesota's conditional first round draft pick previously obtained in the Ricky Davis/Wally Szczerbiak trade cash considerations, and last, but definitely not least, a man named Al Jefferson. What many fail to recognize is that, despite being 7-34, the T-Wolves actually did well in their rebuilding process. Not only that, but they got rid of one of the biggest contracts in sports today (a 2008 salary of $23,751,934) for a player who, with more experience, has the potential to be just as talented.

During his first two seasons on the Celtics, the 15th round draft pick in 2004 didn't too well, as his chance to demonstrate his skills were impeded by a few injuries, which led to Jefferson playing only 8.56 minutes/game as a substitute for Kendrick Perkins. When the Celts found out that Perkins was only able to score about 4.63 points per game, and collect only 4.53 rebounds/game, they knew it was time to give Big Al a shot. Last year, he wasn't half bad, as he scored 16 points along with his 11 rebounds per game. Yes, he averaged double digit numbers for that season, as well as 1.5 blocks/game! Pretty good huh? Well, it seemed like Danny Ainge overlooked this when he traded his big bundle for just one player who you have to pay almost a quarter million bucks for, as well as being 31 years old already; you can't expect Garnett to be decent for long. On the other hand, Jefferson just turned 23 years old in the beginning of this month.

I have never seen Jefferson been talked about, not even on the all-star balloting for this and last year (I have no clue why). Sure, he's on the Timberwolves, but did you know that he was the main reason why the Timberwolves won their 7th game in probably the biggest upset of the season so far, against the Phoenix Suns? That's right, the Timberwolves beat the Suns 117-107, thanks to Jefferson's career high 39 points and 15 rebounds. I'm sure Manny wasn't happy about that when he found out they lost, and I'm sure he won't forget Al Jefferson for a while now.

Actually, come to think of it, looking at his stats, Al Jeff is definitely improving year after year, and his numbers have (just about) up to KG's numbers already. 20.8 points (compared to 19.5), 12.1 rebounds (compared to 9.8), and 1.32 blocks (compared to 1.43). And do you know what really hurts the most for the Celtics? Two things: The $23,751,934 compared to Jefferson's $2,480,885. KG's contract costs about five times more than Jefferson's, PLUS the Timberwolves got a lot more than just Jefferson. Secondly, The big surprise is that Jefferson went against the advice of his agent before the season started and decided to sign a 5 year $65 million deal, far less than what his potential demanded. $13 million dollars per year to a team that has absolutely nothing... yet. This is what he said,

"You look at guys who got the max, like Chris Bosh and Dwight Howard, they've been consistent for their first three years. I just had a great outcome in my third season, so I didn't want to just come out talking about max money."

That was definitely very unselfish for him to say, and I definitely respect him for that.

Although the Celtics are the best team in the league right now (33-7), and the Timberwolves are the worst team in the league (7-34), I must say that the Timberwolves, all in all, were much better off with this trade. What are the Celtics going to do after KG's, Pierce's, and Allen's days are done? Who are they going to rely on? If you turn to the Timberwolves, you know who they're going to rely on (all signs point to Jefferson right now... five years, double figure numbers, good defense... what more could you want from a leader). All he needs is more experience, and he's definitely going to be a guy who everyone is going to talk about. As Al Jefferson tries to wreak havoc on the block and management tries once again to complement their burgeoning centerpiece, he'll show Boston, Minnesota, the rest of the NBA, and their fans that he will not let the Timberwolves down, and that he was a great investment.

Image:77256897-1-.jpg

Speaking of "showing Boston", I wonder how well the T-Wolves will do against Boston. Here are some of the thoughts towards the game:

"I want y'all to understand something. A lot of the guys I played with in Minnesota are not even on this team. It's like a brand-new team. The personnel, the trainers and people behind the scenes are probably a little more important than some of the people who are on the court."

~Kevin Garnett

"It's time now. It's time to start turning this thing around and start building for next year. I look at Boston like I look at Phoenix: just another game."

~Al Jefferson

"I thank the (Minnesota) fans for being behind me. Minnesota knows they have a special place in my heart when it comes to the people there. That's my connection there and it will always be a connection. But right now I'm in Boston and I'm enjoying it."

~Kevin Garnett

It seems like the key players involved in the Minnesota/Boston trade have similar thoughts about their former teams: they are both downplaying the significance of their former teams. As for the Timberwolves as a whole, they won their second straight game for the first time this season when they beat the Suns. The Celts have lost 4 out of their last 8 games (and they've only lost 7 in the season so far. Can we see another upset led by Al Jefferson. We'll see...

I honestly don't think they'll go far in the playoffs with KG either. The only thing he has that AJ doesn't have is a lot more years of experience. He has almost no experience in the playoffs, so what's the difference, really? (Besides maybe his desire to win more since it's been longer since he's been in the NBA without a title)

As a Phoenix Suns fan, let's say I'm a guy who has seen enough of Al Jefferson already.

And what do you mean "Found Out"? I sat and held vomit down each of the last two meetings with the Wolves. I WATCH the games, every one of them, many are in actual attendance AT the arena.

I'm not afraid of the Wolves. They do have some nice young talent, but so does every other team in the West.

The Suns just got caught on two separate nights by a puncher's chance. They have some cohesion issues right now going on and they're still settling.

The Suns just seem to do that - the Wolves stopped two Suns win streaks last year of 17 games and 14 (I think). They lose weird games to bad teams and to young teams that get hot early when the Suns players don't bring it. I can't wait until the Suns beat down the Celtics and everyone can shut their yaps about them. The big boys out West are gonna pimpslap the Celtics!

I'm talking about Feb 22nd and March 26th. I know the Celtics won't make it to the Finals!!! The Celtics are a paper tiger resting precariously on the health of three worn, weary stars and "Doc" Rivers' coaching in the playoffs - they're T_O_A_S_T!!!

I know they are. They rely on 3 players to get through 4 teams and win a championship? And 4 of the best teams in the league at that. Not gonna happen, I don't think.

The Suns supposedly rely on a Big 3 (Shaved Nest, STAT and 'Trix) and you see how far they got before Tim Donaghy and David Stern decided to conspirate.

Jefferson was one of the lone bright spots of the Celtics season last year. It was sad to see him go, but it was a classic case of now or never. One time wanted to make a move now and the other team knew their big money guy was out the door soon. It will go down a fairly even trade as the T-wolves have a good player to build around. You can tell real Celtics fans from the bandwagoners by asking them how they feel about Jefferson. If they say, "I'll always be a fan of his" then they are legit.

Will you still be a fan of his when the Wolves and Celtics meet in the Finals some theoretical glorious day? And why do Boston fans need levels of legitness? You're ALL bandwagon jumpers - you have just done it longer!

I'm still a fan of Pedro Martinez, and if the Mets and Sawx met in another World Series, I'd still like Pedro. That's just me. I can't stop liking a player unless their ATTITUDE changes. Plus, the T-Wolves and the Celtics aren't rivals which makes it a lot easier for me to say, I'm a big fan of Al Jefferson, and will be if not always, for a very long time.

Manny, yeah Boston sports fans are 90% of the time douchebags, but give us credit for the 10% please. As I told the philly fan rooting the Giants in the SB: The wheel turns and right now my teams are on top, it was not always so, and it will soon also not be so. I will enjoy the ride while it lasts and remember these days 10 years from now the way I enjoy the 80's through the horrible 90's.

Oh, I have a hard time thinking about the Patriots without an image of visiting my Aunt in New Hampshire in the early winter of 1990. She lived north of Mt Washington in a small town and to see the looks on the Patriot fans faces.

If the Pats wouldn't have changed their uniforms and helmets so dramtically, I probably would't despise them as much as I do. The old white red and blue colors were so damned depressing and really captured the sports fan's spirit during those times (post '86)

If the Patriots came out on the field in their old throwback unis for the SuperBowl, I would definitely root for them (I hate the Giants, too).

It's easy to be underrated when you are on a team that has won 6 games all season. Jefferson is a very good player, but got the horrible end of the trade.

Right now he got the but end of the deal. But long term it is his chance to The Man on the team. It is his team and he would never have gotten that chance ion Boston. He would always have been under the shadow of Pierce. 5 years from now I Jefferson will be the name on a winning team. Had he stayed in Boston I doubt that would be the case (both being the name, and being on a winning team.)

7! The 7th was against the SUNS! You didn't read the news on the main page?

Sorry Manny, I just had to do that. :P

And Jefferson will get someone on the T-Wolves to help him out. They're just like how the Hawks were a few years ago (2004-2005): 13-69. I'm sure that with some experience, guys like Rashad McCants (23), Ryan Gomes (25), Craig Smith (24), and Corey Brewer (21) will do good once they have a few years of experience under their belt.

The only thing the T-Wolves need to do is give the GM position to someone else.

Exactly Pip. Just what I thought. He'll be just like Kevin Garnett in 1996 (26-56). In his rookie year, he had 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He eventually got more experience and his light shined.

But what is going to happen after KG's numbers start to decline? Who's gonna be your big man? I would rather have Big Al, a 23 year old who has just as impressive numbers as the Big Ticket, than a 31 year old whose numbers are only going to decline from now. Plus, you gave away cash, and four or five other players.

The Celtics won in a very close game. 87-86 was the final score.

Kevin Garnett got 16 rebounds that game, with 10 points, 2 assists, a steal, and a block.

Al Jefferson had his usual game: 15 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals; he did pretty bad on the rebounding part though (5).

Al only got 14 shots, which mean would've been able to score more if Telfair (the PG, who did pretty well with 18 points, 3 steals, and 6 assists) passed the ball to him more.

Kendrick Perkins did pretty well: 8-10 (21 points), 3 blocks, and 4 rebounds. He was the one who guarded Al Jefferson last night.

I'm telling you Yakob. It has a lot to do with experience. Even though he's on the Timberwolves now, who are (at this rate) doing worse than the Celtics did last year, he still has better numbers: 9.8 points/game (compared to 6.1), 5.9 assists/game (compared to 2.8), 1.1 steal (compared to 0.6). The more playing time he gets, the better off he'll be IMO.
