About the Author

Alex Holowczak
I am from Birmingham, England, and I am a fan of many sports, including F1, snooker and cricket. I don't much care for "soccer".

My name is not of British decent, but of Ukrainian decent. My grandfather was from Lvov, a town in Western Ukraine. During the Second World War, he ended up in Britain.

I am the reigning ArmchairGM Pool and Chess Champion, and I hope to retain my Pool trophy in 2008.

O'Donnell dead after collapse

On Saturday 29 December, Phil O'Donnell, the Motherwell captain was playing against Dundee United. However, as the end of the match was approaching, O'Donnell collapsed on the pitch. He was swiftly taken to hospital.

On the pitch, he had earlier seen his nephew Davie Clarkson score only his second ever goal for his club. Players present said they "would never forget the smile on his face."

He played for Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday during his long career. Managers were quick to praise his qualities as a leader on the pitch. Injuries threatened to end his career early, but he continued to play on.

Motherwell's next two games have been cancelled by the SPL, at which point there is a three week winter break anyhow.

The 35 year old is survived by his wife and 4 children.

RIP Phil But, the first guy I thought of when I saw O'Donnell, was Neil O'Donnell for some reason.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. Here's hoping he had joy in his heart before his death.
