No way. I tried right away to sign up under a new user name once the original ban was in place and it wouldn't let me. No way in hell did I create a new user. No way the IP addresses match. You can't do it! Give it a try... have an admin block you and try to sign up under a new name... you can't! If you just don't won't me back then fine, but to make up a reason to ban me is another. What about this JR Lives dude, he probably has no idea what's going on and I don't want to think I'm the reason he can't post here.

I was discussing my article to a friend of mine (we will call him Dr "Jamel" just to irritate some of you :) ), he's an orthopedic surgeon, and he shared an interesting story with me that occured to him yesterday.

He had a young boy, age 7, who came in with a severe sprain/strain to his ankle (I did the MRI read for him this morning), as they were worried that he did in fact fracture it (he didn't) or even tear some of his ligaments (he didn't). This young boy hurt his ankle playing basketball. When my friend, Dr "Jamel", asked him if he played any other sports the answer he got was "NO! I like basketball. I only play basketball!". Dr "Jamel" asked him if he ever played any other sports or if he was interested in playing any other sports. Answer he got was "No! My dad said that if I want to make it in the NBA I should only play basketball. Always basketball". Dr Jamel scratched his head a little and asked him if he WANTED to play any other sports, like baseball, or football. "No because then I won't make the NBA".  Dr Jamel laughed, told him to come back today and he would go over the MRI reports reassuring a 7 year old that his basketball career was still in tact.

When I was a young kid that age I played baseball, soccer, basketball, hockey, football, swam, down hill skiing, and volleyball. It wasn't until the age of around 10 that I started focussing more on football and hockey as my sport of choice. For hockey I was even scouted as a young kid and they kept saying "If he grows he has a chance...."; I never grew, end of story (I'm only 5'10")

Now I'm not amazing at each and everyone of these sports but I can play each sport relatively well. I golf now too, still play hockey in a men's league, and play a little fun baseball in the summer. Dr "Jamel" and I didn't grow up together but he too played a ton of different sports very early as a boy and also told me that he's "okay at each one of them". We started discussing how kids don't do this anymore, as from day 1 they focus on only 1 sport and concentrate all their energy mastering those skills. We then started to discuss if this was a positive thing or a negative.

It was still early in the night and we decided to have some drinks so we invited a friend of ours "Bryant", who is a physical therapist and specializes in sports rehabillitation, to come along. The discussion got brought up again and my friend "Bryant" went on a rampage on how he believes this new trend of playing only one sport is screwing up kids, both with injuries and skill levels. Since he rehabs these kids he was telling us how 99% of the kids, for example who play basketball (it's very popular here), have NO balance, proprioception, and feet skills. They can't even stand on one foot without falling down, can't even really kick a ball.... basically have no eye-foot coordination or real ankle stabillity. He also rehabed a young kid, 12 years old, for a shoulder injury who played soccer. Amazing feet skills (which makes sense) but NO hand-eye coordination. He sees this all day long.

So again, Frank, what's the point here right? Well when we were all kids playing all sports we developed good hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, balance, slow-twitch muscle endurance, fast-twitch muscle explosion fibers.... basically all round good development to make us a good "athlete". I don't think anyone is going to argue with me that in all sports you have to be great rounded and have great hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, feet skills, hand skills, etc, etc. Each and every sport is different and develops these sense and abilities differently. Kids aren't being taught anymore to be "athletes", they are instead being taught to be "baseball players", "basketball players", "soccer players", "football players".

"Bryant" and "Jamel" kept saying that they mostly see injuries to very young kids on the body parts that are least involved in that particular sport....... which would seem like the opposite to be true.

So my point here is that don't you think it would be better to expose your YOUNG kid to as many sports as humanly possible, let him and her develop all these different skills, and when they reach a certain age, then start focussing in on one sport.  Exposing them to different sports at any early age, when they are developing and can learn at the fast learning, developing age (like teaching a kid a 2nd language early), will make them better "athletes" which will help them in the long run at their particular sport.

So I personally URGE parents to stop the new trend and make sure you expose your young "athlete" to as many different sports and skills as possible. Wait! Wait! Wait! until you focus in on that ONE sport... in the long run it will pay off!

Some of the greats in the world of sports are AMAZING athletes who can play multiple sports well-- basketball AND baseball, football AND baseball, stuff like that.

So don't screw up your kid. Don't relive your youth thru them. Let them play. Let them play ALL sports.

Have a good one. Enjoy the extra day of the year.

My kids multi-sported until about 3rd grade. At that point, they were encouraged to play as many sports as they can (and they still are), but they were no longer allowed to play more than one sport at the same time.

Trying to get two kids to two different sports 6 days a week was just too taxing on their mother and I.

Now, they both focus on Basketball as their sport of choice, but they also participate Cross Country and Track & Field

Did you practice at the particular sport 6 days a week? I didn't. I played hockey. We practiced 1 or twice a week and played one game a week on average unless it was playoffs or tournaments.

If they dropped the amount of practice time, which I believe is overkill, then this would allow kids to diverge out more into different sports.

I think that's the problem here.

I also played both soccer and baseball (which the seasons ran at the exact same time) and was able to do both. Again, we practiced I think 2 a week for baseball and played one game, 1 a week for soccer and one game. However, we had recess every day, 3 times a day that we played baseball during AND on the weekends we had pick-up games ALL the time. I'm of course talking about when I was under 10 years old.

I played a ton of sports growing up. When I wasn't playing organized sports I was playing pickup games, usually roller hockey or football, but the sky was the limit. But like you cheezer, my parents only let me play one sport per season. Which, looking back now was the right thing to do for the reason you explained. One year they let me play soccer and football (in hopes that I would get the football idea out of my head). Once I got pounded into the ground (and a goal post) Decided my football career was over. I didn't really start focusing on fewer sports until my freshman year of highschool. That year, I went from soccer, wrestling, and baseball to just soccer and wrestling. The following year I cut down to just wrestling and practiced and competed all year long.

My best friend's uncle is trying to work with his two kids in one sport, and one sport only: baseball. The guy loves it, and can play it really well. He figures that the more you learn as a kid, the faster you develop as a player. His ultimate dream is to watch his kid/s play for the Red Sox organiaztion someday. This is definitely true, but there is still a lot of competition out there... probably thousands of dads are doing the same thing with their sons. I honestly think that you're meant to be in the Big Leagues/NBA/NFL/etc. if you're in. When you do, there is no higher place you can reach. You've just made it to the place everyone is dying to get into. It will pay off for all the kids who don't quit, try to do another sport, or some other factor that will just make him lose his light of the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

I got a high ankle sprain in basketball this past summer and played through it for hockey and softball. I regret it now. Whatever ligaments I tore or damaged occasionally give out of me when I go up and down stairs or just take an awkward step. I assume it'll eventually rebuild but I'm sure the scar tissue will remain. Relax, y'all. I'm not getting into it with this guy.

I just have a skeptical reader that lives in my head. Forgive me for not falling for the tricks of an amateur.

Statements like "99% of..." without any real basis usually is a red flag for my bullshitometer. Also, there are plenty of hockey players that are 5'10" or shorter...

Let me giove you an example of the "Leap of Faith" writing style:

"they mostly see injuries to very young kids on the body parts that are least involved in that particular sport....... which would seem like the opposite to be true."

Yet the basis for the article was an ankle sprain to a basketball player...

Also, the article states that the author did the MRI read for the patient THIS MORNING after a night of drinking. When werer you working, dear author? Was this while the author was posting the article?

Am I the only one that sees right through this?

The generalizations are ludicrous. "Kids don't do this today" - WHERE is the proof? Assumptions don't become true just because you put it on the internet.

99.999999998% of all kids AREN'T going to be pro athletes no matter WHAT they do. 99.999999998% of all current pro athletes were born with tremendous genetics and/or a superior will to strive and succeed. 99.999995% of all pro athletes have amazing support circles of family and coaches.

To hypothesize about whether a kid plays one sport when he's 8 or not means absolutely nothing towards his future success. The athletecism of an 8 year old has NOTHING to do with how they will develop as athletes in adulthood.

Well, that and the fact that I can list dozens of current pro athletes that didn't play any sports until they were teenagers and grew into their bodies and realized they were good...

Guess what? Do too much of anything and it can harm you. Paracelcus is proud of his theory. Example: You need water to live. Drinking too much water can kill you.

Ben Franklin is proud of his theory on moderation as well.

Enjoy the hyperbole and sensationalism over a topic with no substance by an author with no merit. I am smarter than this.

I have no patience for someone who writes in a manner "just to irritate some of you"

It wasn't an attack, read it - I was pointing out another leap of logic.

He said he was scouted as a hockey player as a youth (whatever that means) but "didn't grow enough". 5'10" is taller than average for a male. And definitely tall enough to play in the NHL.

And so you know, I wasn't always 6'6", either... I was a very late bloomer. And I WAS scouted by several MLB teams at ages 17-21 and was told repeatedly that although my arm was live but at 180 lbs I was "too skinny" to be a pitcher. And I ate more then than I do now!

Now that I'm 270lbs where are those bastards at?

Explain why my ankle hurts on rainy days back East but not Rainy days here in Arizona. I'm afraid that it will hurt when I move to Michigan and it gets rainy.

I tore ligaments in it twice - and the second time had over 20 little tiny adhesion fractures due to the injury.

I also got hit by a batted ball on the inside of the same ankle that caused 3 bone chips which have subsequently fused back to my tibia almost like spurs and they hurt (annoyingly, not sobworthy pain) when ever I press against them or wear boots or hightops.

If it hurts when I move back east and it rains (or snows and I need to wear snowboots), will I need surgery to fix it? or can you prescribe me some HGH to deal with the pain and subsequent recovery?

A joke? But I always take you so seriously, Doctor! You didn't give me advice on my adhesion fractures or bone chip/spurs yet! It's been years and there's still pain - and actually all of this acute awareness of my ankle HAS made it hurt a bit today... (may be a touch of lingering soreness from an 8 mile run 2 nights ago)

Dude, you're a bone guy. I'm the investigative reports guy. Do you think I don't look these things up?

I want advice from a medical professional, not generic blabberings. I don't have arthritis in my feet. My hands and fingers, yes, but my ankle hurts above the joint where the ligament tore from the bone and where I got hit by a batted ball. So on both sides of my leg I have bone fragments.

There is no loss of range of movement or strength. Just pain when I press on it and when I go back East...

And all this talk about shoulders the last couple days, I'm gonna go get mine checked again. My old insurance wouldn't cover any surgery on my AC process, because it only hurt when I threw a baseball and it was deemed medically unneccessary because I was not a pitcher, but a stockbroker. Maybe my new insurance will cover it if I bitch about it???

Any tips to getting an elective surgery somehow viewed as a needed one? Should I say it hurts all the time?? Can I do something to hurt it more?

I DO want to have catches with my kids someday... and not have to resort to going lefty all the time.

I was told it wasn't a big deal as far as the surgery goes; just a scraping away and reshaping of some bone to allow feer movement. When I start to throw, my oversized ligaments swell and get pinched from not having enough room to move freely.

The original thought was that it was bursitis. And getting lidociane shots suck. It feels like a breast implant in my shoulder and didn't remedy anything. Then the narrow channel was discovered and that the ligament had slight scar tissue (fucking Cubs scouts) that made it a bit too big. But I also have long muscle fibers that swell with use and the combination is very, very painful.

Yeah, and I really do have bursitis (most likely from jacking off too much, not pitching), so the first guy got that right, but missed the narrow channel on the MRI. The second guy knew what he the hell he was doing.

Jeez, Frank I am not OK, are I???

A more interesting argument:

Johnny Cochran: Why would a wookie, an 8 foot tall wookie, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two foot tall ewoks? That does not make sense! But more importantly, you have to ask yourself, ‘what does that have to do with this case?' Nothing. Ladies and Gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case. It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

Sounds like a future horror screenplay authored by Manny Stiles:

"Dr. Frank's MRI Machine Kills the Bad News Bears"

Scene I: (Amanda throws sliders to Buttermaker)

Amanda: Hey Buttermaker, my shoulder is hurting!

Buttermaker: Shake it off crybaby! The key is to pitch more! Pitch through the pain!

Amanda: Something just popped and the bone in my shoulder looks funny....

Buttermaker: Lemme see that. Christ you kids pitch about everything (pulls tab off beer and chugs)

Amanda: I need to see a doctor!

Buttermaker: Doctor? Christ no {swigs beer}! Get in the car!

Amanda: Where we goin' Buttermaker?

Buttermaker: To see a buddy of mine. Better than a real doctor.

Amanda: Who?

Buttermaker: You can call'im Dr. Frank. Now shut up! {swigs beer, turns ignition over}

End scene.

I'm in a pretty good mood, but that doesn't make me become a liar - and I'm not watching too much American Idol or channelling my inner Simon Cowell - it really does suck.

Now if you have Doctor Frank pop up ("Hi! Ev-ree-bud-dee"/"Hi! Doctor Frank!") and have the kid throw through the pain until it forms her AC joint into the "perfect pitcher's shoulder". Dr Frank moves to Canada and marries Pam Anderson meanwhile Amanda meets Rookie of the Year kid and (fast forward PAST the chick flick romance part) they have a kid together that ends up moving to Canada to become a youth Curling champion who finds Dr Frank right before the biggest youth curling tournament in history Dr. Frank begins a montage of training techniques by making the kid play a whole bunch of different sports to increase hand-eye coordination, etc.

Then during the tournament, Vladmir Klitschko busts in and bludgeons Jay Mariotti (who is there looking for a cab while covering the event for the Boise Scam Times and seeking Dr Frank's advice for his lip issues) with a flurry of boredom...

THEN were getting warm.

(looks at imaginary watch - minute and 45 seconds - damn, I'm slipping)

Superpowers? We;re almost getting somewhere now... Well, we can have the b!2 give her a super memory - that would be ironic at least. Then she can unmisremember how Buttermaker sexually abused her in the first movie (bet you didn't know that scene was cut out, eh?)... Then she can go win the big game right as Buttermaker passes away and after the game she can be sad that she ends up marrying and divorcing John McEnroe.

Well you see Dr. Frank, by injecting B12 laced with lidocaine (let's call Rocket's Magic Carpet Ride) the superior aspect of the clavicle morphs into an exact replica of Nolan Ryan's throwing arm. Amanda's MRI indicates no injury to the shoulder whatsoever. Once Buttermaker is revived (Dr. Frank keeps a crash cart handy for extracurricular purposes not related to medical use) and sobers up somewhat, Amanda pitches to him once again. Radar gun indicates a velocity of 100+ after countless pitches. Dr. Frank only charges $50 for the entire procedure and asks that his name never be mentioned again. On an unrelated matter, Engleberg's body is mutilated with injection tracks on his legs and arms and is discovered behind the Bears dugout. Dr. Frank is nowhere to be found. Buttermaker slowly connects the dots....

There needs to be a cockfighting scene. Buttermaker should definitely be into cockfighting when he falls into the coma...

Hmmmmm... Cockfighting... I dunno but how about this? We introduce a sympathic character into the story called Jamel. He is a from a stereotypical broken family, missing dad, crack whore of a mother and only has an interest in cockfighting. As a "coming of age" experience, he introduces the sport to the fat kid on the team that ultimately becomes the catcher. In a terrible mishap, one of the cocks pecks out both of the fat kid's eyeballs, he trips and falls backwards and ends up as a quadriplegic with mental retardation.

And the name of that particular poor misfortunate fat kid?

Jay Mariotti.

You might as well have a mandatory fire drill in the middle each showing at every theatre.

You don't write screenplays for personal reasons - that's called elaborate daydreaming - you write them for financial reasons...

UNLESS -

Amanda: "Where's the fat kid?"

Doctor Frank: "I ate him. I had his liver with a glass of chianti..."

Amanda: "You ate Jay Mariotti?"

Dr. Frank: "The lips were chewy and the anus smelled of an inflatable Ben Wallace doll, but in the mean time....

SPIDERMAN!!!!" (throws handful of Mariotti's "fluids" that he had hidden"

Amanda: "Ewwwwwwww!"

Dr. Frank: "Oh damn, what did I do?? I need that semen!!! Get back here!!!"

Amanda: "Wow, Manny it really DOES write itself!"

ST, I grew up playing Soccer, Basketball, Baseball but by 12 was playing Soccer year round (I still played basketball during Soccer's 2 1/2 month dead period in So. Cal). I always played with older kids to help expediate my growth and development in the sport (much like Jozy Altidore's parents did with him, but they choose to do it to him, and I choose to play up myself.) I guess what is unique about my situation is that my Dad always let me do what I wanted and then he wrote the checks and showed up to the games. He was just so happy to have a son who could reach his athletic achivements that he didn't care what sport I played.

It really varies year to year, team to team Frank. It does interest me how some players I've had were pure footballers, while others where great multi-sport athletes. For example, my Goalkeeper 2 seasons ago was a pure soccer player, formerly a forward that I converted into a Goalkeeper and now he is playing in the A-League here in the US. My Goalkeeper this season and most likely next season is a Baseball Catcher and a damn good one. He is more of a great athlete that I've made into a very good goalkeeper, but he doesn't have the soccer IQ of the first kid. In general they are both excellent athletes. It is my opinion at this time as a coach that I want my high school players playing soccer year round, and I'd rather have middle school age kids playing no more then 2 sports.
