Not a Great Weekend of Basketball

Coming off Pitt's implosion on Friday night, it was tough to get excited about any kind of basketball action in the Pittsburgh area this weekend. Unfortunately, not much happened to change that:

-Duquesne lost at home to a Richmond team that they probably should have beat. Dukes Court suspects that Ron Everhart's club was looking ahead to next week's A10 showdown against Xavier.

-The Pitt women were clubbed at home today by #2 UConn. The game was on ESPNU and I watched some of it, and for a while, Pitt hung with the Huskies. UConn pulled away by holding Pitt scoreless for the final 8 minutes of the first half. It was "Pink the Pete" day (for Breast Cancer Awareness) and from what I saw it looked mildly successful.

-A few minutes ago, a very mediocre Wake Forest team became the second team to beat #2 Duke all season. I think we all know who the first was..

-Pitt's next opponent, Notre Dame, barely beat lowly Rutgers today, 71-68. The game was at Rutgers but Pitt will travel to South Bend on Thursday, where the Irish have won 34 in a row. ND is ranked 18th and Pitt will drop from the rankings. The Panthers really need a win, since they are slipping into the middle of the Big East pack and still lack an impressive road win. Snapping a 34 game streak would do the job. Pitt looked terrible at Marquette, but they always play well coming off a loss. I wouldn't be surprised to see the upset.

-Penn State beat Illinois ( in a 52-51 thriller) on Saturday to improve to 12-12. They're still 4-8 in Big Ten play though..

Am I the only one that thinks Pitt (Men's) is severely overrated?

Yes. They have been plagued with injuries this year. They should have everyone back by tourney time so it could still make a great finish to the season. Pitt beat Duke and a number of Big East teams. It's hard to win in the Big East.

True. But, they were on a tear before they got the injury bug.

A pre-calculas teacher in my school is a huge Pitt fan and tells me all about his team. I don't think you can consider a team who has lost 2 starters for quite some time (40% of what is considered their best team) overrated. That's just me though...

The Panthers have potential, but when they start to struggle, they entirely fall apart. When hot, they can beat ANYBODY. I wouldn't be surprised to see them knock off ND and/or Louisville this week, even though most people probably won't give them a chance.
