News to Youse: Rays Open New Era

Rays superprospect Reid Brignac has been called up from AAA Durham to replace the recently injured Jason Bartlett. Bartlett was placed on the 15 day DL as he injured his knee stealing third base in the final game of the Rays...
Me thinks Brignac will wear a different number than he sported at AFL

SWEEP

...of the second place Red Sox last night.

Also, the Mitch Talbot era ended without a pitch as the Australian native was reassigned to Durham and replaced on the roster by utilityman Ben Zobrist. Brignac is likely to start at short whereas Zobrist will be counted on for backup and pinch hitting roles.

Yet another 2007 Arizona Fall League alum will make his debut in Kansas City as the Rays continue to extend their lead in the AL East.

Brignac may look 13 years old, but his footwork and glovework are well seasoned

The "Future" has become the "Now". Brignac is projected to be a productive Major Leaguer and could very well be among the bex=st three at the position in a few short years. He already has the glove and the power to hold down the position.

What? You thought the "New Era" was something about being the best team in baseball or how Boston sucks? That's old news, pal.

Now for the next "BIG MOVE" - prepare adequately for the "new Sandy Koufax" (yes, I REALLY said that), David Price - he's NEXT!

9=8 - the "other" 7 = We Are One Team.

Go Rays!

I thought they were for real last year.

It all comes down to Joe Maddon, the mastermind. He's so easy to like and even easier to buy into what he's saying.

I have a couple hours of him answering questions recorded. Maybe one day when I get the "free time" I'll splice them all together to be as ridiculous as possible.

sounds like a plan...I think that'd be fun to listen too...the funny thing is this guy looks like he should be teaching a high school math class...holy glasses, Mr. Maddon! Can you count my pores from over there?

He's a psychologist and motivational speaker in a uniform.

I had a pleasant conversation with him about red wines. My brother had a pleasant conversation with him about 'all things pickled'...

The guy is personable and instantly likable. He's freeking smart and witty and disgustingly optimistic. He "gets" people. Geez, even my shy-as-hell son liked him! (Ok, maybe it IS the glasses)

The Royals are looking like they'll only lose some 80 to 90 games this season. The offense is looking better with the two run outing last night. Maybe this will be the year that the Royals are just mediocre. I'm Optimistic that the Royals will be in contention no later than 2020...

Manny and I saw him play several times in the Fall League, (him more than me), and while our opinion of him differs, I'll say this.

While I'm secretly (no more, I guess) rooting for the Rays this year, I have no "fanship" ties or any other personal interest.

Brignac and Longoria will both be multiple gold glove winners and All-Stars. Both will be consistent .300 hitters, and, despite his young age and slight (for now) build, Brignac has pop for a SS. (32 xbh out of 75 hits, 42% ratio, outstanding for a SS).

From a defensive standpoint, he's a little weak going to his left, (you want an infielders weakness to be to his glove side), it's not a huge weakness and he has the range and quickness to compensate. His footwork is plus, and his arm is off the charts, (he could play CF easily).

I don't know if his callup is permanent or not, but if he has a Longoria/Jay Bruce type start, I can't see the Rays sending him out.

Without playing a game, the Rays are a better team today than they were yesterday.

I rate his footwork above his arm, and in practices and taking infield I saw him do some SMOOTH, sleight of hand-type things with his glove - jaw dropping smoothness, in fact. But the game KD and I saw together, Brignac outperformed Longoria - if that means anything.

Brignac looks like he's just entering puberty and is tall and thin, but his bat has surprising pop. He'll never win a batting title, but he'll lead all shortstops in SLG, one day for sure.

Kd, your assessment that he could be a centerfielder - I never thought of it, but yeah, he could! Physically, people are always going to compare Brignac to Derek Jeter when he first came up - and Jeter SHOULD be a CF. Brignac is a better fielder than Jeter and with more power, but Jeter is definitely more of a contact hitter.

It's an exciting time to be a Rays fan (even a "secret" Rays fan!)

I don't like making comparisons, per se, because each and every player is individual in his own right. Comparisons should be, "hey, this guy reminds me of...." because maybe Niteowl will read this and remember, or a Dodger fan will read this and remember. My comparisons are more about tools than performance...I can compare a lefty hitter to a righty hitter because of approach, not because of batting average.

I love this guy to death, both as a player and a person, and I can legitimately say I've really never seen anyone close before, but I have to say, Brignac is as close as I've ever seen to.....

those are some serious words. And other than he's a little older than Yount was when he came up and he won't be able to grow a mustache for another 10 years, I can actually see that... I've tried to be overly cautious with Brignac because I was too high on Longoria (or spot on, apparently) but now that the Cajun Sensation is up, LET THE HYPE ROLL!!!

We're all guilty of over-hyping young players, some pan out, some flame out, and I'm probably at the top of the list for that.

I saw Longoria do something in the Fall League that probably only ten guys in the majors right now could do, but if you pushed me, I'd have a tough time picking between him and Alex Gordon.

From a shortstop point, its a no brainer. Brignac is the best young shortstop I've seen since Jeter. I love J-Roll, Hanley's special, Reyes is overrated, and Tulowitzki may end up being better than all of them, (I really like Khalil Greene too, so maybe I ain't so smart after all), but Brignac has at least all the tools those guys have, combined, his are better.

I know he hasn't had his first ML at bat yet, just watch and make your own conclusions. The kid's got it, and I mean all of it.

I think all of their success started happening when they got rid of Elijah Dukes. My theory is that once the police stopped coming by to take statements from everyone, they could focus on baseball.

I think that the Delmon Young and Brendan Harris for Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett would be the more logical reason.

You should be warned that this Manny Stiles guy is a HUGE fan of Mr. Dukes and is ready to bettle dimly witted jokes about him with facts.

Such as: Dukes was never arrested for the "You dead, Dawg" incident and his divorce is now final. Too much was made of the situation because the woman (niShea Gilbert) was an utter, total mean bitch (and pure gold digger) and her lawyers tried to take everything to the court of public opinion over the actual court. But you didn't hear THAT story in the "news" did you?

Sure, the Rays had to cut ties with him to achieve what they were trying to do - build a team where individuals were part of the whole. But I've met him several times and Dukes isn't the bad guy everyone wants to make him out to be...

Besides Dukes has been playing well as of late and still has a jaw-dropping skill set. He's not done yet.
