New Old Jerseys and Hideous Hats

What are we? The facking Devil Rays? The Marlins? We have four jerseys now! No, wait, with the green ones that's five! And now we have our very own "alternative cap?"

I'm bullshit about this. Absolutely positively about to have an aneurysm kind of bullshit. Kick the dog, bite your own tongue 'til it bleeds kind of bullshit.

I don't mind the new road jerseys. I actually like them. They remind me of the new Bruins‘ alternate jerseys. A sense of history with a bit of modern style. They make a statement without being too loud.

Image:Road.JPG

But now we have alternate home jerseys (the red ones) AND alternate road jerseys? What the fack? Why do we need so many alternate jerseys?

Image:Blue.JPG

I'm sorry, but that's a spring training warmup, not a Major League Baseball uniform, and certainly not the uniform of a 108 year old team like the Red Sox. Laundry like this should never leave Fort Myers.

But the worst part. The absolute worst part of all this pre-Holiday promotional garbage is the hat that belongs in McCoy Stadium down in Pawtucket, not in Fenway. This is a joke. I can't believe the Boston Red Sox will be taking the field with this travesty atop their heads.

Image:Cap.JPG

It's not that these things look particularly ugly. And certainly there are worse jerseys around baseball. But why change? How much money is enough? Don't the Red Sox sell enough pink and green and turquoise merchandise for Larry Luchino, Tom Werner, and John Henry to survive through the stormy waters of today's stock market?

The Red Sox have five different jerseys. That's only one more than the Kansas City Royals. Nuf said.

I'm so sick of all the Jersey tampering in all sports. If the Pens make a permanent switch to the Blue Jerseys my eyeballs may just melt off. And Rawb, I'm sorry you will have to watch your team play in those hats.

I hate to say it, but you have to look to the Yankees as an example. How many jerseys do they have?

In the mid-90s when the alt jerseys took off in baseball, there was a while when the Yanks and the Rangers were the only team with two jerseys and one hat. As a lowly Rangers fan, I took pride in that. Alas, no more. As for the Pens, Steel Town, I defer to you since it is your home team, but those blues are a nice piece of polyester. Alts don't bother me in other sports like they do in baseball, especially for a tradition-rich club like Boston.

Tay, I like the blue jerseys as an alternate, but I LOVE that all three of our major sports teams (and even a number of non major sports) have the same color scheme.

Rawb, the occasional tip of the hat to the dark side is acceptable. Just don't make it a habit.

Yeah, the black and yellow in Pittsburgh is pretty cool.

Alternate jerseys are fine. What really cheesed me is that the Sox already have alternate jerseys, and they're still going to use them. They also have green jerseys for St. Patrick's Day. And now new hats?

When was the last time the Sox played without a 'B' on their hat?

Agreed, ST. I wouldn't want the blues to become the regular. I, too, appreciate the black/yellow solidarity. As an alt, it's fantastic, especially seeing what some others are throwing out there. My hometown Dallas Stars spring to mind.

It looks like the Red Sox are trying to save money on multiple colors of fabric.

The top one looks very similar to the uni's the Sox used in the '80's, except those had more of a block script. There was NO red anywhere in those. The home uniforms were the same as always. Some colored alternate jerseys are hideous, the red ones Pittsburgh and Atlanta use, for example. I don't like red anyway, just a personal aversion, but with the right combo really doesn't look all that bad, then again, it's just a picture.

I definitely think 1980s Roger Clemens with the new/old road jerseys. The blue ones look exactly like pre 2000 spring training jerseys.

I do like the quasi-Wade Boggs-era all-grey uni. But I agree, the 2nd one is a spring training uniform, and I'm already trying not to think about the hat.

Just to add my 2 cents, I rather like all of the different designs that teams usually bring out. I recognize that a good bit of that is just to sell more shirts but I have no problem with that. Sartorial splendor usually requires some experimentation and boldness and sometimes the results work sometimes they do not. I just like it when clubs are not afraid to venture out and try something new. I even got used to and began to like the white shirts Arsenal wore last season. I also like the sky blues that the Flightless Ones wear, takes me back to my youth. I especially liked the red vests that the Pirates wore for a time.

Yeah but could you imagine if the Pirates took the P off their hat?

The Red Sox are a very traditional club. As JuT noted, it's been 77 years since they played a game without a 'B' on their hat. I think to change that isn't experimental or bold, it's anti-Red Sox.

Yeah, I actually like the red striped hat, and wearing a vintage - or "throwback" as you kids call it - hat/uniform every so often would be fine. But making a new hat out of an old logo just feels wrong.

Ok I am a die hard sox fan and this has zero effect on me. We bitch about such stupid insignificant things around here(Boston) its funny. We forget that the owners are trying to sell a product and they have helped make us into the number one franchise in Baseball.
