NHL standings update

With only two games last the standings did not get mixed up all that much. The Atlanta Thrashers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 and Tampa remained the last place team in the East now just three points back of Atlanta for 14th place and the two teams meet again this week. Keep an eye on this it is really important. The Kings currently hold the worst record in the league but if Tampa gets swept in the rest of their games and the Kings win one then who gets the first pick in the draft could be a coin flip. In more important news the Rangers beat the Penguins in overtime last night on a Chris Drury goal. The New York Rangers moved into a tie for 4th place with the New Jersey Devils. With the one point the Penguins are now two points ahead of Montreal for the top seed in the East.

There are nine games on tap for tonight. The Capitals will fight for their playoff lives against the Hurricanes who are two points ahead of them in the division. The Buffalo Sabres also play tonight and must beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in order to remain in the hunt. The Devils will look to seal a spot and move into 4th place by themselves when they play the Islanders. Montreal and Ottawa also square off and Montreal can tie Pittsburgh for first place in the league and the Senators can leap over the Rangers if they win.

In the West the Calgary Flames square off against the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames currently hold onto 7th place and the Oilers are on the outside looking in, just two points behind Vancouver. Nashville who is just one point behind the Canucks faces the Blues, while the Canucks do battle with the Colorado Avalanche. The Ave’s are three points ahead of the Canucks and holding on to 6th place.

Look for a lot to change tonight. I will do another update tomorrow.

Finishing in last place in the standings does not guarantee you the first pick in the draft, it is decided by lottery. This is why, although the Blackhawks didn't finish in last place last year, they still got to select Patrick Kane first overall.

I forgot about the recent change. The NHL used to be like the NFL, thanks for the reminder.

Since I'm not a huge hockey fan can you please explain to me how the tie breaker works. For exmaple the Rangers and Devils are tied for 4th right now but haven't the Rangers gone 7-0 this year against the Devils?

The first tie breaker is number on wins and then it goes down to head to head. after that it has to do with goal differential and anything else they come up with
