There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

NHL on frozen Ivy? Holy Cow!

The National Hockey League liked the idea of an outdoor game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres January 1st. They liked the idea so much that they may do it again in Chicago in a site that is known for ivy and Ernie Banks. The Chicago Blackhawks, one of the original six teams in the league, are on the league's sort short list for teams that may partake in an outdoor game in the near future. The plan was for the Blackhawks to play at Soldier Field but terms could not be reached.

This might work. The one problem is logistics. Where would you store the rink until it was ready to be put up? Would you have the teams change ends in the middle of the third period like Pittsburgh and Buffalo did? Then you have to take into account the wind. Both the Penguins and Sabres had some problems with the wind and elements in the game New Year's Day. But if the Blackhawks, the NHL, the city of Chicago and the Cubs get their ducks in a row, it might work. Fans would come off the Red Line at Addison Station and be ready for a game. Heck, even Bartman could get in.

It may work. The NHL needs it, the city of Chicago could use the revenue and media exposure and it would be the first non-baseball event at Wrigley since Gale Sayers ran amok for Papa Hallas.

I'd be all for an outdoor game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, but I'm hoping it comes to New York instead. I know, I'm being a bit biased in saying that. During tonight's 6:00 PM sports report on WABC-TV's Eyewitness News, the Yankees have given the NHL the green light to host an outdoor game for the Rangers in 2009. Should this become a reality, I'll definitely provide some coverage on any possible announcement. Whether it is in Chicago or New York, it's bound to be a success. My concern is, the NHL shouldn't schedule these outdoor games too often or the excitement and/or novelty of the event will wear off.

If the Rangers get the outdoor game, they should play it at the old Yankee Stadium or Shea before they close the places down.

The Blackhawks had Mikita/Hull Night at the UC recently. Bettman was in town to grudgingly support the attraction (John McDonough of the Hawks wouldn't take no for an answer) and of course the media inquired about an outdoor game. Staying true to NHL marketing stupidity, Bettman provided a blank stare and fumbled some lame excuse for not endorsing the idea. Hey Gary, at least say "we're working on it" or something.
