NFL Week 7 Highlights: Dallas Suffers Another Embarrassing Loss

Well, it appears as though the combination of the Tony Romo injury, and yet another episode in the Adam Jones chronicles got to the Dallas Cowboys' heart. Yesterday, the St. Louis Rams upset the 'Boys, 34-14 (if you want to even call it an "upset", many expected this). Yes, Marion Barber did manage to break 100 rushing yards (just barely with exactly 100 yards), and did in fact get into the end zone in the first quarter. But, the rather inconsistent Steven Jackson of the 2-4 Rams ran for 160 yards and scored three--yes, THREE times. Jackson scored 35 fantasty points for my AGM team on Yahoo!

Romo's replacement, hefty veteran Brad Johnson, looked disgusting. Three interceptions came from his cannon of an arm, and he fumbled one more time, though it was recovered by the offense. Truth is, he has been off the field for too long. I, myself thought he would be capable of leading the Cowboys offense over this Rams team. But, Wade Philips put too much on his shoulders. I'm not sure why you would have Johnson attempt 34 passes, and give your star running back just 18 carries. The defense is under too much pressure and has been giving up too many points. Give the ball to Barber 25-30 times, and you may have had yourself a game.

**Insert funny/rude/nasty caption here**
**Insert funny/rude/nasty caption here**

No, I'm not saying the Cowboys would have won the game. The problem is obviously the defense at this point. Give Barber the ball 30+ times and have your defense give up less than 30 points, and THEN you can safely say Dallas would have a 5-2 record.

Point is...

  • Dallas has a few things to work on.
  • St. Louis has a chance at winning 10 games this season. Call me crazy, but they ARE in the NFC West, and just take a gander at their remaining schedule: New England, Arizona (twice), New York Jets, San Francisco (twice), Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Atlanta.

If Steven Jackson can stay productive, and Marc Bulger gets help from his offensive line (being sacked five times is something that cannot happen) this team could win some tight games down the stretch.

Steelers Come Off Bye Week With Big Win Over Cincy

It may only be the winless Cincinnati Bengals, but a win is a win. The Pittsburgh Steelers' 38-10 win over the Bengals didn't come as easy as it sounds. The game was close through three quarters (17-10). But the Bengals, who were without star QB Carson Palmer, were eventually hit hard--as was their rookie LB Keith Rivers out of USC, who is out for the season with a broken jaw after being jacked up by Hines Ward on the fourth play of the game. Da 'Burgh scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull off the 28-point victory to cruise to a 5-1 record and a commanding lead in the AFC North.

With Willie Parker still out with an injury, the Steelers had to rely on Mewelde Moore, who made his second career start in a black and gold uniform. Moore ran for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns (2 on the ground, 1 through the air). Moore's first TD was a two-yard reception and was his first TD of the season. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was sacked for a record-pace of 18 times before Sunday's game, wasn't sacked once. But on the other side of things, Ryan Fitzpatrick was sacked by the Pittsburgh defense seven times, and forced two fumbles (only one was lost). Roethlisberger threw for 216 yards and 2 TD's. Former Jacksonville Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich threw for 34 yards and and added another TD pass in the game. Pittsburgh will head back home to face the 5-1 New York Giants next Sunday (4:15 PM ET).

James Harrison did this twice in Pittsburgh's 38-10 beating Sunday in Cincinnati.
James Harrison did this twice in Pittsburgh's 38-10 beating Sunday in Cincinnati.

BBB15's Thoughts on the Rest of Sunday's Games:

Baltimore Ravens 27, Miami Dolphins 13
Joe Flacco didn't make many mistakes and LB Terrell Suggs sparked the Ravens' win with a 44-yard interception returned for a TD early in the second quarter. The key to the game? Ronnie Brown (13 ATT, 27 Yards, 0 TD's, 2.1 YPC) and the Wildcat formation was inaffective for the Fins. Because of that, the Ravens were able to come out on top and improve to 3-3 on the season.

San Francisco 49ers 17, New York Giants 29
J.T. O'Sullivan had a decent game, throwing for 256 yards while completing 16 of 28 pass attempts and even adding in a TD pass and 27 yards on the ground. However, his two interceptions and four fumbles (only one lost fumble) were very costly. Frank Gore running for just 11 yards on 11 carries didn't help much either. In fact, O'Sullivan was San Fran's rushing leader... not good! Eli Manning threw for 161 yards and a TD while Brandon Jacobs ran for 69 yards and two TD's.

New Orleans Saints 7, Carolina Panthers 30
I can actually, truly say that I called this game! New Orleans really isn't what they appeared to be last week. Yes, Drew Brees may be one of the most effecient passers so far this season, but his supporting cast just isn't there. Reggie Bush is now out 2-4 weeks, and Jeremy Shockey and Marques Colston just returned to game action. Past Bush, the Saints really don't have much of a running game. I just think the Panthers will go on to win the NFC South. Jake Delhomme is as healthy as ever, and looks poised to win a division title. Steve Smith finally broke out with 122 yards and a TD catch on just six receptions for Delhomme's Panthers, and rookie Jonathan Stewart is back in the lineup!  Get used to Carolina being in the win column this year, they may just break out with 10-11 wins.

San Diego Chargers 14, Buffalo Bills 23
The 3-4 Bolts MUST be more consistent if they want to cruise to the playoffs this season. I think this was Buffalo's statement game, and they proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the east. Watch out, New England! Young QB Trent Edwards completed 25 of his 30 pass attempts for 261 yards and a 2-yard TD toss to WR Lee Evans in the second quarter. Again, Ladainian Tomlinson was ineffective, running for just 41 yards on 14 carries, and that allowed Buffalo to pressure Philip Rivers into two sacks, and three turnovers. Buffalo is now 5-1... weird!

Minnesota Vikings 41, Chicago Bears 48

Devin Hester and his Chicago Bears seem to play well with those bright orange jersey's on.
Devin Hester and his Chicago Bears seem to play well with those bright orange jersey's on.

This may have been the wackiest, and most puzzling game of them all this weekend. Minnesota scored 41 points on offense and STILL lost the game?! No way. Well actually, yes way. Adrian Peterson (the Vikings RB, not Chicago's) ran for 122 yards and two TD's while AP's backup, Chester Taylor, ran for 34 yards and one more TD. The difference? Turnovers. Minnesota's QB Gus Frerotte threw 4 interceptions, and Minnesota added a special teams fumble to the mix of things. All that added up to be 5 total turnovers. Chicago had just one as Kyle Orton threw for 283 yards and 2 TD's.

Tennessee Titans 34, Kansas City Chiefs 10
Not surprisingly at all, Tennessee remains the only unbeaten team left. And, Kansas City even had to use three different QB's. Brodie Croyle went down with an injury (and will be lost for the season) after starting out going 9 for 10 for 63 yards. Backup Damon Huard left with another injury after three quarters, so Tyler Thigpen finished the game for the one-win Chiefs, who only managed 10 total points (all scored in the final quarter of play).

Detroit Lions 21, Houston Texans 28
This was a rather surprising score. Who would've thought the Lions would score more than, lets see, zero?? Not me. But, they did thanks to a Kevin Smith 26-yard TD run, a 96-yard pass from Dan Orlovsky to Calvin Johnson (and the two-point conversion) and two Jason Hanson FG's. Johnson accounted for a majority of the Lions' total yards. In fact, 154 yards and a TD on just two receptions. Talk about yards after the catch! Matt Schaub looked great for Houston, completing 26 of 31 for 267 yards and 2 TD's. Wide receiver Andre Johnson caught 11 of Schaub's passes for 141 yards and TE Owen Daniels caught both of Schaub's TD tosses for 66 total yards. Detroit remains winless along side the Bengals.

New York Jets 13, Oakland Raiders 16 (OT)
This was an awful game for both teams.  The Jets nearly ran Oakland out of their own stadium (242 total rushing yards; 159 for Thomas Jones), but through the air? Brett Favre threw 2 INT's and zero TD's while young JaMarcus Russell threw one TD to Javon Walker. New York: 418 total yards yet no W? What's up with that? Well, the game was tied at 13 at the end of regulation, so they headed to OT. But, Favre failed to lead New York to even a field goal attempt in three overtime drives.  So, you let Oakland drive on you, and Sebastian Janikowski hits and unlikely game-winning 57-yard FG with 2:30 left. Wow. Lesson learned: The Jets are trash and will not win the AFC East; Janikowski has a leg! Even though I kinda already knew about both of those statements... oh well.

Sebastian Janikowski celebrates moments after drilling the game-winner from 57 yards out in Oakland.
Sebastian Janikowski celebrates moments after drilling the game-winner from 57 yards out in Oakland.

Cleveland Browns 11, Washington Redskins 14
This was a bit of a yawner. A 0-0 tie at the half!? Reminds me of the 3-0 Pittsburgh victory over Miami last year (minus the six inches of rain/mud littering the field). I really wasn't sure what to expect from this game. Was Cleveland for real? Will Washington bounce back from last week's stunning upset? Well, anyway, I knew Clinton Portis would have a big day, which he did. Portis had 175 yards on the ground and a TD--which came halfway through the third quarter. Derek Anderson had a nightmare of a day (14 of 37, just 136 yards passing and a TD). Let me just say, Cleveland is not for real, Washington is still a great team despite the scare.

Indianapolis Colts 14, Green Bay Packers 34
No one expected this. Whatever happened to all the "Peyton's back" from last weekend? I must admit, I was part of that crowd. Peyton Manning sure didn't look like Peyton Manning against this Packer defense. He completed just half his passes and threw two interceptions with zero TD's. The highlight? Dominic Rhodes: 73 yards and 2 TD runs. Aaron Rodgers was efficient and productive for Green Bay (21 for 28, 186 yards, 1 TD), and Ryan Grant finally broke 100 yards on the ground and added a second quarter TD run. Note: Both of Manning's INT's were returned for Packer touchdowns; Nick Collins 62-yard return in 3rd, Aaron Rouse 99-yard return in 4th.

SNF:
Seattle Seahawks 10, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20
Tampa had a great night last night.  Of course you all know about the Rays' first-ever World Series appearance after defeating the Boston Red Sox, 3-1, at the Trop. But, Tampa's QB Jeff Garcia, starting for the injured Brian Griese, threw for 310 yards and a TD in their 20-10 victory over the 'Hawks. Tampa gained 402 total yards on their way to a 5-2 record in the South.  Seattle only turned the ball over twice, but continues to struggle.  They will head to San Francisco next week sporting a 1-5 record (1-1 in the Division).

I really don't give a damn what Cheezer's evidence shows about passing the football, Mike Holmgren is clueless, he has no idea we have a good running game.

No more balanced bullcrap, if your passing game sucks, it sucks. Don't try and go all cute and be "balanced".

There were 16 runs last night for 103 yards, and they could've had more if not for the holding call early in that game.

Holmgren will be pushed out early because he really has no idea what he is doing. He promised some trick plays, and I've seen none. That was all media talk and he has passed more than he has run, including in the 2 games where the outcome was not decided until late (Tampa and SF), in 5 out of 6 games.

The longest play of the night was a 45 yard run, and on the next 3 plays I believe, it was 3 passes. The man is no longer an elite coach, and I cannot find a good reason to miss him after this debacle.

Try smashmouth football, it works, just look at Tennessee.

Finally, Kelly Jennings is a wasted draft pick and Brian Russell continues to make Sean Considine look like a hall of famer.

My evidence (via [www.footballoutsider.com Football Outsiders] is a "rule-of-thumb" based on years of statistical review. It is fact that teams gain more of their rushing yards in the second half after they are already winning the game.

Remember that statistical analysis does not exist in a vacuum. It is just another tool to use in conjunction with your other skills and knowledge. All bets are off when you have Seneca Wallace under center

You cannot use Tennessee as an example this week. Who were they playing? The gameplan must be adjusted based on personnel and match-ups.

It's time for Seattle to put Hasselbeck on IR and makes plans for next season.

Why don't you just call a spade a spade

Holmgren's playcalling sucks...

Throwing the ball on 3rd and short is dumb, especially when you have a back that can gain those yards...

So you're saying don't play to your strength? Cheez, Holmgren is pass horny, he doesn't adjust. My QB is 14-37? Screw it I'm going deep!

Look at the blocking schemes Mike Solari has given Seattle, they've rushed over over 100 yards as a team in all but 2 games, and it's no coincidence those 2 games featured the highest passing totals and absolute blowouts.

Julius Jones ran for 126 yards against SF, they still lost. Why? Because the defense sucks and even with a depleted receiving corp, Holmgren let Hasselbeck throw it 36 times (37 passing plays with the lone sack)!

The Titans made the playoffs last year because Vince Young sucked and they used the running game. The Vikings made a late comeback in the playoff hunt because offensively the passing sucked and they used the running game.

The Seahawks suck in the passing game but they're throwing it even more! Am I sensing a pattern here?

To further that point. Tennessee has run 206 times compared to 155 passing, and the Chiefs thing to me I can't discount because Denver, who has a good running game, couldn't run a lick that day in KC.

Seattle, against the likes of the Packers and 49ers, have run it 162 times compared to 170 passing.

The Seahawks have MORE rushing yards than passing yards. Why are we passing? Why? We have JJ, Mo Morris, and TJ Duckett in the backfield and on average you're calling only 20 running plays per game (with the Rams game as a statistical outlier)?

In short, Holmgren doesn't smell the coffee, the playcalling sucks, the pass defense is worse, Seattle is 1-5.

I specifically said that you need to look at personnel and match-ups. Seneca Wallace = run the ball.

That does not change the validity of statistical fact (is that an oxymoron?).

I say again. Statistics do not operate in a vacuum. You must use them in conjunction with other tools when making your decisions. And by other tools, I mean your observational skills that Seneca Wallace sucks and you need to run.

I see your Denver and raise you a Carolina and an Atlanta. Both ran well against the Chiefs.

I am not defending Holmgren's playcalling. It's obvious with Hasselbeck and the top 17 receivers on the roster out, the Seahawks need to run the ball. However, I wouldn't consider the likes of Morris and Jones to be a strength.

Rather than say "they suck" can you enlighten me as to why? What happened to all the pro-bowl linebackers? How did they get in a situation where the secondary is so weak?

One more comment on Seattle before I go away. I was going to send this directly to SSR, but I decided to put it oput here where all can discuss/ignore it: This season looks like more of an indictment of the front office than it does of the coaching staff (How was the Branch signing? How much did it hurt to keep Alexander around for all that time?).

It's hard to be successful considering all the injuries they've had on the offensive side of the ball. I'd be more concerned with that defense. Why do they think that the Seattle secondary can man-up? Did the CBs look like they were over their heads? What happened to the Pro=Bowl Linebackers? How's Kerney doing?

Not a strength?

Seattle as a team ranks 8th overall in the league in rushing, 8th in YPG (131.5), 4th in runs of 20+ or more with 8. They are 13th in total rushing yards, yet tied for 3rd in yards per carry (4.9), but that has to do with the biggest stat of them all:

21st in total rushing attempts, and 17th in attempts per game.

That is pathetic, because against Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Green Bay, and San Francisco, they were within 14 points at some point in the 3rd quarter. So there was no urgency to pass at all.

Only the Bucs and Giants are in the top 12 in rushing defense, and while the Giants game was a bust, Seattle ran for 103 yards against the Bucs with just 17 carries. Seattle is failing to properly use their running game against teams with bottom of the league rush defenses (49ers and Packers for instance).

Julius Jones is on pace for a 1,000 yard season, he's averaging 4.7 yards per carry, good for 11th in the NFL among starting running backs. Maurice Morris just had the longest running play Tampa Bay has given up all season with 45.

But this lovefest Holmgren has with a QB like Seneca Wallace throwing to guys like Koren Robinson drives me crazy.

When you watched the Pack face Seattle, they could run the ball, but instead chose to be balanced. Jones had a 50 yard run negated all because of a really soft holding call against Wahle, Seattle CAN run the football.

TJ Duckett even ran for 100 yards (I think he did) against the Rams and he was the backup! That was the one game where Seattle just kept running the football against a sad sack rush defense like the Rams, and that is their only win of the season.

It's easy for me, pound the football. Because this Sunday, Seattle is facing a rush defense in San Francisco that is in the bottom 10.

Management was indicted as soon as Seattle kept two (TWO!) kickers.

Deion Branch needs to be traded, a waste of time, he is broken glass and is no longer reliable because he isn't healthy.

Those Pro-Bowl linebackers are sadly being led by a John Marshall defense. Ray Rhodes is gone and now Marshall is doing his suicide D. I've never seen Seattle drop so many LBs in coverage before. This is severe exaggeration, but let me illustrate this:

Image:Sfsfsf.png

Against a 3 wide, single TE formation, he'll try and rush 5, drop 2 of his slowest linebackers into coverage, then bring in someone like Lofa Tatupu to be a spy.

But that is an illustration/exaggeration of Seattle's zone defense. There is no such thing as bump and run, Seattle gives up that much room so that as long as your QB is taller than 5'10 he'll complete a crossing pattern over the middle as the DBs literally backtrack and miss tackles.

Secondary....ugh. Again, victim of Marshall's system, but Brian Russell and Kelly Jennings are crap. Russell gives no safety help, Jennings doesn't cover.

Hope this helps, I'm rushing this comment so I'll give you more via a message.

Highlighting two of my favorite things: A Steelers win and a Dallas loss. It was cool to see the Steelers win big. And it is true (as you said) that it's only Cincy...but this is how the Steelers should win over Cincy. Should be interesting when the Steelers take on the Jints. Especially after they struggled to beat Cincy (in OT?!?!) and lost to Cleveland.

And Dallas...after a week of moaning about Romo and Adam (can we call him Pac Man again now?) Jones, they got whupped by a team that got whupped by Seattle and had (prior to the 'Skins and 'Boys) had made an art form out of giving up 30+ points and losing by at least two TDs.

How 'bout them Cowboys? Maybe Jerry Jones has finally stepped over the line with his incessant meddling. These losses couldn't have happpened to a better guy. Except for Al Davis. Too bad the Raiders had to win. I was hoping for 1-15 for them.

I still think the Cowboys are a good team. Romo will be back and now he has a new toy to play with (insert joke). The only thing that I think can ruin this team is if TO decides to turn into a whack job again. I don't think it will happen though. Not to mention, the Rams came into this week on top of the world after taking down the Redskins. The Cowboys are still one of the top guns in the NFC. Don't get too excited, they will make the playoffs.

The story of the Packer games was the penalties against the Colts and the non-calls against the Green Bay secondary. The sub-story is the fact that Green Bay took Harrison and Wayne completely out of the game.

Manning was completely at a loss.

I was glad that Dungy (Moore?) kept calling for running plays. If you want to run when down by 17 points or 20 points against the Packers, go right ahead. We'll let you do that the entire fourth quarter.
