NFL Free Agents (Quarterbacks)

There’s not whole lot to talk about when it comes to free-agent quarterbacks, but there are a couple who can and will make a difference during the 2008 season. The real NFL season starts March 1st as these free agents will one way or another find themselves in a new situation.

From a fantasy perspective never overvalue any free agent unless they’re re-signing with their current team.

Derek Anderson (Cleveland): Was it a case of Anderson making everyone on the offensive side of the ball better or was it the other way around? It’s weird how the NFL works; Charlie Frye was named the Browns starter during week one of 2007 and before the beginning of week three we never hear another word about him. I couldn’t tell you where Frye is right now, but I can tell you that Anderson is a bona fide starter and a draft day trade that landed Quinn in Cleveland could eventually backfire. Even when it looks like the Browns make excellent draft day decisions (Brady Quinn), it turns out that it may end up backfiring. So I ask, did Anderson make the Browns offense better or was it drafting Joe Thomas, the all-pro play of Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow’s maturation, or the resurrection of Jamal Lewis’ career that offered Anderson a sense of security? However we look at the situation Anderson is a perfect fit on a team that desperately needs to win.

Daunte Culpepper (Oakland): I am truly not ready to give up on Culpepper’s career and if he signs on with the right team with a favorable situation he should rebound from his less than perfect return from injury last season. In 2007 with the Oakland Raiders Culpepper showed signs of the old “Pep”, but on other occasions he looked confused and completely out of his comfort zone. Look for improvement this season and his best case scenario would be to squash any type of beef he has with the Vikings and grow with a team close to making big noise in the NFC. In my opinion, a healthy Culpepper could replace about 50% of starting quarterbacks in a quarterback starved league but then again, I don’t earn millions making NFL decisions.

Other Free Agent Quarterbacks:

Josh McCown (Oakland): Career backup hoping to hang onto a job in Oakland.

Quinn Gray (Jacksonville): I don’t think Gray is as far away as most people think. However, at best he’s a couple years away from being an every week NFL quarterback and that’s only due to any type of injuries.

Drew Henson (Minnesota), Ken Dorsey (Cleveland), Ryan Fitzpatrick (Cincinnati), Jared Lorenzen (NYG), Cleo Lemon (Miami), Jamie Martin (New Orleans)

Anderson - Tons of raw talent, relies on his natural ability too much. Taking the Browns 3 year deal would be the best move for him. (PS: Frye is still 3rd string in SEA)

Culpepper - Generally agree with your assessment of him, San Fran might be a possibility for him. It depends if he is willing to be the security blanket instead of the star, we'll see where his ego and agent take him.

McCown - Will continue to help JaMarcus Russell grow in Oakland.

Gray - Doesn't have the natural abilities to start every week in the NFL. Will always find a job being someones solid back up.

Henson - Still in this league? Dorsey - Should stay in CLE and help friend Brady Quinn "make it". Fitzpatrick - Out in Cincinnati for Jordan Palmer, he's a smart QB so he'll find a back up role somewhere.

Lorenzen and Martin should be out of the league this year, Lemon might hold on and find another back up job.

Yeah, I know Anderson is resigned. But, how long will he stick around? Should be interesting over the next couple of years.

I doubt it will happen but I wouldn't be surprised if the Browns traded Brady Quinn. I think Fitzpatrick will end up with the 49ers (Martz drafted and loved him), Lemon will probably catch on somewhere, and I as "J.Load" fan, hope Lorenzen ends up somewhere as well.

Considering trades in the NFL of expiring contracts is uncommon compared to the NBA I would say that Anderson is going to be around for a while. However, I see the Browns growing Quinn like the Chargers grew Phillip Rivers. If Anderson plays well AND Quinn comes into his own, Anderson's contract becomes very tradedable come draft day a year or two down the road.

While you're right about the NFL expiring contracts vs. the NBA, that fact of the matter is, its almost impossible to maintain anderson's value while building Quinn's...

The Vick and Schaub scenario is probably the most recent, however, schaub was left riding the pine while vick played 3/4s of any given season...

Problem is, Anderson isn't injury prone, so Quinn has zero value to the browns...and you don't trade relatively proven commodity QBs to keep younger QBs who aren't proven (and its only a few years difference)...

The Bengals were sort of the exception, but they let kitna walk

The Bengals had no choice, they spent the 1st overall pick on Carson Palmer. Might I add that sitting him his first full season was most likely the best thing that happened to Carson Palmer. Moreover, the Chragers sat Phillip Rivers for 2 FULL SEASONS, and although he has been shaky, I believe they are happy with what they did. So I believe that the reason that the Browns signed Anderson for 3 years instead of two is because they want the option to ship out Quinn if Anderson locks down the number 1 spot long term. Anderson's contract gives the Browns lots of flexibility moving forward.

And even though Todd Collins resigned, you might have wanted to mention a guy who went 3-0 as a starter

According to this he should have been lucky to hold onto a job in Oakland, now he'll be in charge of his own offense
