NBA Power Rankings and Playoff Index

The table below shows [1]ChanceBot.com's Power Rankings and Playoff Index for the NBA as of January 24.

Power Rankings provide a calculation of relative team strength based on their performance to date.

The strongest team is given a strength of 0.0, and all remaining team strengths are relative to this standard.

The difference between two teams' scores indicates the expected average point differential in a series of neutral-court games played between the two teams.

The Playoff Index for each team gives the probability (expressed as a percentage) that the team will make the playoffs.

These probabilities are calculated by simulating the remainder of the season while taking into account team strength, home-court advantage, and historical trends.

Dallas and San Antonio have slowly creeped back into contention after a diappointing start to the season. The Lakers have surprised me, I never would have thought back in November, that they would be the third best team in the NBA. And, Miami has been disappointing, I knew they wouldn't be in the top 10 or anything, but second to last?!?!?! That's crazy!! The Knicks are doing better than the Heat.

I'm sure the Timberwolves will be sooner or later, until Shaq gets back. And speaking of the Knicks, they've actually done all right as of late, winning 5 out of their last 7. They beat the PISTONS! The other victories were against the Nets, Wizards, Heat, and the 76ers.

I keep looking at all these different power rankings that have the Lakers top 5 and wonder if these simulations take into account that Bynum is gone til mid March.

Fair point. My rankings are purely mathematical--meaning they assume teams will continue to perform at the level already displayed. As performance levels changes, rankings are adjusted accordingly.

My philosophy is that in order to be truly objective I can start adjusting teams up or down based on what I see as the contribution by any particular player. Also, some teams are able to adjust to an injury due to personnel, playing style or whatever. So I prefer to let performance on the court determine their rating.

That said, I am always looking at the math that drivs these and trying to find ways to improve--but I don't change anything in the ranking calculation mid-year unless I can verify that there is a true error which is skewing the data.

I don't think they haven't eitehr, LASportsblog. How are they going to compete in probably the toughest division if they don't have Andrew Bynum. He got injured on January 13th, and since then they have played against the Sonics, Suns, Spurs, Hornets, and Mavericks. They've lost 3 out of their last 5. And they were on a roll before Bynum was injured: 10 wins out of their last 11 games before the 14th. But now, I think that since they've lost a couple of games against the best teams in the league, they'll be all right now. For the rest of January and February, the only teams they really have to worry about are the Pistons (Jan 31), Magic (Feb 8), and Suns (Feb 20). They're facing pretty average teams, and with Kobe's 27.7 points/game, and Derek Fisher's experience at point, and Lamar Odom's 9.5 rebounds/game, they should be OK. I'm not saying they're going to do great; it could happen, but it's not likely.

If they can split the upcoming 9 game road trip 5-4 or even 4-5 I think they will ride this rough patch out and come out ready to compete in March.

The Cavaliers are steadily moving up after a slow start. Good to see.
