NBA Players on the Move

With the NBA’s trade deadline quickly approaching on February 21st, I want to take a look at what teams have done so far. The league has been criticized in the past for boring deadlines where franchises are afraid to make a big splash and look stupid if the deal doesn’t work out for them, but this year has been a little bit different, thanks to one big trade that I have already discussed, as well as some big name players signing contracts. Also, we have some time for (perhaps) Jason Kidd to find a new home, despite Mark Cuban saying he won’t be returning to where his career began, in Dallas.

So far, Shaquille O’Neal has become a Sun, Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks are in Heat, Pau Gasol is a Laker, Chris Webber back in Golden State, Damon Stoudamire plays for the Spurs, and Kyle Korver has joined the Jazz.

That’s a combined 24 All-Star selections changing uniforms during the season. Ok, 14 of those All-Star nods come from Shaq, but still, there’s some big names changing addresses. Toss out Marion going to the Eastern Conference, the worst team to boot, and you have 5 teams in the West making a move that they think can either get them over the top or solidify themselves as a championship contender. Let’s take them each one by one.

Shaq, although I still don’t agree with the move, gives Phoenix a low post threat and allows Amare Stoudemire to play his natural position. Can these guys make it work? How many games will Shaq play? In his first practice with Phoenix, he was exhausted. Will the games be different? It’s going to be interesting no matter what happens.

Pau Gasol has been a force with the Lakers, and they look great. Even with Andrew Bynum still sidelined, L.A. is 5-1 with Pau in the lineup, and the big Spaniard is averaging an even 20 points a game playing with Kobe Bryant. Do they now have a chance to win the whole thing? With Kobe, Gasol, Lamar Odom, Bynum, and whoever else they want to throw out there... yes, yes they do.

Chris Webber is back in the Bay Area, and playing for Don Nelson like he did when he won Rookie-of-the-Year back in ’93-’94. What kind of impact can he have? Well, in 2 games, C-Webb has only played an average of 13.5 minutes, so it’s hard to say. He doesn’t fit their style at this stage of his career, similar to Shaq, but he is an excellent passer who can maybe open it up finding Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson, and Monta Ellis for free threes.

Damon Stoudamire will split back up point guard duties once Tony Parker returns to the lineup. For now, he and Jacque Vaughn (yes Jacque Vaughn) are running the show for the Spurs. Stoudamire is looking for his first ring, and although he’s now a member of the defending champs, they could win it again... with or without him.

Kyle Korver was actually traded to the Jazz at the very end of 2007. This move has not been discussed as much, as Korver doesn’t even start in Utah, and some thought the fans needed another player to relate to. Take a look at the roster in the team’s most successful season in franchise history. You’ll find the likes of John Stockton, Jeff Hornacek, Greg Ostertag, Adam Keefe, and Greg Foster. That’s an all-American white wash. But as far as on the court is concerned, the Jazz are 17-3 with Korver and now lead the Northwest division. Probably the most underrated move so far. I love the Jazz’s chances in the West with Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur, AK-47, Ronnie Brewer, Matt Harping, and now Korver.

The East should and will come down to the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics, unless LeBron James gets a little more help and he just goes crazy for a series or two. The West is going to have a fantastic finish. The 10 teams who have hopes of winning the whole thing: Phoenix, New Orleans, Dallas, Utah, Lakers, San Antonio, Denver, Golden State, Houston, and Portland. Who needs to make a move and who can stand pat? Half of these teams have already added pieces that will factor in their playoff run. What will happen in the next week or so?

-Rich Keefe

I wish some sucka (Knicks?) would exchange a pylon for Ben Wallace. And Joakim Noah. (okay - 2 pylons)

The Suns would take Noah in a heart beat. I'm sure 20-some other teams would too.

The Bulls have no soul. They are void of a team image - that isn't Noah's fault. If anything he edges them CLOSER to having a presence as a unit. I credit him for speaking out - rookie or not - the guy is used to winning, he wants to win, not make friends.

The team and his teammates have handled it all wrong - and the standings prove it. They are a team comprised solely of potential and/or nothing but role players and pieces - depending how you look at it.

Signing Wallace was a stupid move and they are paying for it... Big Ben however might as well sprout feathers on his wingspan, he and his contract are an albatross!

Joakim is a headcase and damaged goods. He shows up late for practice and is a yapper. Not a great start for a NBA career.

As for your assessment of the overall team, very little argument here. Wallace was supposed to be the guy but has played like a corpse. Others such as Gordon and Deng are pissed off at management for not getting big time contract extensions (and this year's play from both stiffs is not gonna help their cause).

Hard to believe that this was the same team last year that had a pretty good run in the playoffs.

Noah will be fine. He has too much size, athleticism and a "motor" (even if the exhaust of that motor is his mouth)

Show me a 22 (soon to be 23) year old 2 time NCAA champ that doesn't feel a certain bit of entitlement on a losing team. He'll grow out of that...

If I was a Bulls fan, I'd want everyone gone except for Thomas, Sefolosha, Noah and Nocioni.

When Chris Duhon and Joe Smith are giving you 20+ minutes a night each - you aren't a very good team...

Noah's father was a pro athlete, so he should already know how to behave in front of the media and especially his teammates. Rookies have no rights regardless of their "rep" because they haven't done a thing at the next level. What you do at Florida or in Triple A doesn't mean jack in a pro clubhouse because all those guys have been there, done that. When I see a rookie getting in trouble after just two months in the league red flags go up all over the place for me. If I'm the Bulls I'm looking to dump his ass already.

Because he went to UConn and/or he was born in England, why else??? Seriously though... There are a million scoring 2 guards that can shoot 42% from the field (come on! He's a 40% career shooter from THREE! Does he not know how to make a mid range jumper or layup?), get less than one steal a game and avg less than 3 APG... especially ones who won't demand a huge extension.

Shaq was "exhausted"??

You must have been to the imaginary practice. He was "winded" and considering it was the first time he had run in almost a month.... SO WHAT?

Two people I personally would NEVER underestimate - Shaquille O'Neal and Mike D'Antoni.

Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of Mike D'Antoni, but his style of play will have to change with Shaq. And for a guy with 0 trips to the NBA finals and a 25-21 playoff record, not sure why you would NEVER underestimate him.

I never underestimate D'Antoni because he's taken 4 very differently constructed teams and won 60+ games twice with his system and made a 2 time (3 time) MVP in Steve Nash. I have NO doubts.

And I can explain away many of the playoff losses easily with one word - injuries.

Shaq will be just FINE in D'antoni's system. He's already stated that he is thrilled he gets to play the Kareem role (Shaq's former mentor in LA) in the new version of Showtime. Personally, I think he'll be more like '72-73 Wilt...

ANYONE can run 94 feet in 7 seconds (it's about a 9.5 second 40 yard dash) - Shaq will not change the Suns style one bit. In fact he will make the system BETTER. He will draw doubles and free up the best shooting team in basketball to launch away...

Oh, and let me wake the doubters up for a minute - Do you think the Suns REALLY run that much??? Check their fast break points sometime. They get their open looks early in the offensive sets, they aren't running and gunning like everyone thinks they are. Just because they don't grind it out, that doesn't mean they are running fast breaks every time down.

Fast breaks START on the defensive boards - That's Shaq's job. Rebound and outlet... He's motivated to fit into the system, he's motivated to mentor Amare and he's motivated to win a title.

I swear - the people who don't see the genius of this move have clearly never played basketball...

I hate to sound like a Suns basher, because I really enjoy watching them, and have always wanted them to win the West the past 3-4 years.

But unfortunately being able to win 60 games twice and give out MVP awards isn't going to put a ring on your finger. They are able to run past teams in an 82 game schedule that just don't want to keep up. This year for example the Suns are just 15-13 against the West, but they're the best?

Not sure what you mean by "4 very differently contructed teams." Pretty sure the core of Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, and Amare Stoudemire were always there, even Barbosa has been a part of the run in each year.

And if you want to chalk up D'Antoni's playoff record to injuries (I'd throw in officiating) how can you be convinced that they won't run into those same problems counting on Grant Hill and Shaq.

I'll be rooting for the Suns, but they got their work cut out for them. I have yet to hear a convincing arguement for them. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens once they get the whole team together.

A Convincing argument

- note the date it was written (before Shaq arrived for his physical)

FOUR VERY different teams. Note - I won't list Nash, Amare, Marion or Barbosa

04-05 - Joe Johnson, Quinten Richardson, Jim Jackson, Walter McCarty, Jake Voskuhl, Steven Hunter, Casey Jacobsen ALL avg'd 10+ minutes a game

05-06 - Raja Bell, Eddie House, Boris Diaw, Kurt Thomas, James Jones, Brian Grant, Tim Thomas - NO Amare...

06-07 - Marcus Banks, Pat Burke, Jalen Rose, Kurt Thomas, Jumaine Jones, Amare returned

07-08 - Grant Hill, Brian Skinner, Shaq, DJ Strawberry...

The Suns have turned over a ton of players in the last 4 years. ALL of whom met or surpassed their career best production.

Still don't see the point about the turnover. All teams go through this. Look at the Spurs with Parker, Manu, and Duncan. They've played with a cast of characters and still managed to win championships. And they try to get players who can fill similar roles to others that left. You can only have 5 on the court I believe, so if your 4 best are there each year I'm not sure we need to highlight all the intense turnover. Anybody playing with Nash better improve on their numbers from the previous season, style of play, number of shots, the best passer in the game, etc.

They've "ran" regardless of who was here. The Spurs have built their team around the best, most dominant player in the game - Mr. Duncan. D'Antoni's system isn't built around his star(s)... The players become stars because of the system. And if it's all about Nash, why has Dallas become better without him?? None of their numbers went down.

Whether you want to say they've had a ton of turnover or not, this is going to change the way they play, and maybe for the better. They go from small and fast to very big. We'll see what happens. When's Shaq going to suit up? How those hips?

His hip is fine. Phoenix has trhe best medical staff in the NBA. (See: Amare Stoudemire's knees, Nash's back, Marion's wrist)

Shaq is already good to go and could play tomorrow against Golden St or thursday vs. Dallas but will most likely wait until after the All-Star break.

They want to ease him into it and allow him to absorb the system to see where he fits and what his role will be. He's also been out for a month so his lungs need to get back into NBA shape...

I honestly don't think Shaq will affect the pace of the offense one iota (See: Kurt Thomas, Brian Grant) but he WILL change the Suns half-court game (Yes, they run a lot of half court sets too) because he'll get double teams and he's such a great passer out of the double team and he will absolutely change the defense when he's on the court.

My only concerns with Shaq - obviously, he's a health risk and his foul issues (shooting and getting into foul trouble)

The biggest plus of the trade - STAT comfortable at PF. He HATES playing Center and was All-NBA 1st team Center last year... Add it up.

OK, I suck WAY less than so many people that ARE getting paid...

I really think the reason that I haven't been paid to write is because well... maybe this is it - I haven't really tried to?? Yet, somehow... there ARE dozens of "professional" writers who have accepted me, encouraged me and even praised my efforts... soooo?

I've only been doing this for "fun" and entertainment purposes. I have yet to really try to get anything published. Maybe I should actually "try" to write something good and get it published just for you?

And you don't need "accomplishments" to call me silly names, however - you DO need accomplishments (say, like logging in) if you think I'll ever take your criticism of my creative skills even slightly serious.
