NBA Finals Game 1: Thoughts and Burning Questions

Game 1 of the NBA Finals certainly didn’t disappoint.  There’s much to be covered though, between some burning questions and some general thoughts.

Overall, what a great basketball game.  The shooting in the fourth quarter was definitely subpar, but the first half of basketball was really pretty.  The third quarter was full of drama, and the fourth was completely nail biting because neither team could do enough.  The Lakers couldn’t do enough to get completely back in the game, and the Celtics couldn’t do enough to completely put it away, until KG’s put back dunk of course.

And what a dunk that was.  I couldn’t help myself, I screamed.  I just yelled.  My neighbors actually tell me they like it because they know how the Celtics are doing and they don’t need to be watching the entire time.

Anyone who thinks Peirce was faking doesn’t know Paul Peirce, plain and simple.  I don’t care who you are.

Is the Celtics’ defense that much better than San Antonio’s?  San Antonio basically decided to use the plan that worked for the Celtics in the regular season, only they couldn’t do it.  That prompted me to wonder about 10,000 times over the past week if the Celtics would try something different.  They didn’t, and Kobe didn’t hit his jumpshots, again.

Speaking of jumpshots, for a guy who is thought of as useless on defense, Kobe seems to have a hard time getting a clean look off over Ray Allen.  And a pretty hard time getting into the lane too.

What is the difference between “Wipeout” and “I Survived a Japanese Game Show”?

I like to imagine that the producers have a mute button for Jeff Van Gundy for when he gets a little out of control, only they never told anyone about it.  I also suspect they’re getting Mark Jackson’s button ready.  Two direct quotes: “I’ll take great offense over great defense every time”.  That’s not even worth a comment.  The other: “Kobe is as good as MJ was”.  This was especially hilarious because ABC then showed their stats side by side, and Jordan’s 30 points per game against the old rules compared to Kobe’s modern 25 was laughable.

What a hassle for Sam Cassel to get in the game.  It takes him about five minutes to undo his 85 backwraps and take off about 10 shirts, then Rondo hits an open jumper and he has to put it all back on again.

It’s nice to see Eddie House was able afford a jersey for his kid, as opposed to that XXXL tee shirt he’s been wearing for the playoffs.

Does anyone know if Vujacic uses a headband, or is that actually his hair, but it’s gelled down?  If its gel, do you think a company might want to consider using him for an endorsement?  (I don’t)

What was the difference between Paul Peirce’s 4 point play last night, and the one against Detroit?  Answer: Nothing, except the call that was made.

What were the odds of Kobe switching to cover Sam Cassel this series because he was blowing up?  100,000 to 1?  1,000,000 to 1?

The length of these TV timeouts is staggering.  It’s hard enough being so tense the whole game, but the 5 minute breaks give my body time to relax before tensing up again during the game, and I’m not even playing!

Apparently girls like Luke Walton.  This was news to me.  (I’m not sure I can name many other players that “girls like”, but for some reason I found Luke Walton to be surprising).

The Celtics have proven they can win this series (which sounds funny, seeing as they had the best record in basketball this year) by winning game 1, but if Paul Peirce is at less than 85%, this is going to be painful.  He shot well, but didn’t drive at all, and he’s been living of his mid range game this whole playoffs.  If he’s not cutting well, his man will be able to help off and double on KG, who could average 40 this series if he wanted.

Either way, the anticipation for Game 2 is so high, and the whole extent of Peirce’s injury debate is just building it.  Will he run okay?  Will he be able to post up?  Not to mention everything else: will the Lakers go cold again?  Will Kobe get fed up with this shortly?  Will the Boston D keep it up?  Will KG’s body spontaneously combust from pure intensity?  All I know is I’m not missing a second of Game 2, not for anything.

"Overall, what a great basketball game"

You haven't watched many basketball games I take it...

Vujacic uses a hairband... much like mike millers. It's just an elastic band thast keep the hair out of the face. I know this because my wife has some for when she runs ball. Yes, Adidas and Nike both make these items.

"I’ll take great offense over great defense every time” is true and simple. Great defense has to react to the offense. Great offense, no matter HOW great the D is, will score - this is why you can play all the D in the world and still get scored on.

Great offense does what it wants. Great Defense does what it has to do.

If you've ever had a guy hit a jumper in your face even though you were blocking his eyes with your hand and right up on him, you'd realize how simple this concept really is...

I didn't say it was the best played basketball game, if the second half played out like the first half then the quality of basketball would have been staggering, but I thought the "greatness" of the game was derived from the drama in the third and the way the Lakers hung around in the fourth. And "Offense wins games (or sells tickets), defense wins championships". I've never heard anyone say the opposite, until last night.

just a few quick FYI's:

1) A great game doesnt mean a ton of fast breaks and a final score of 127 - 122. Just wanted to throw that out there

2)Great Offense vs. Great Defense. Great offense can win for a play or 2. Or maybe if its really special for an entire half even. But over the course of a 7 games series the defense will win out. Maybe not in the playgrounds, but in the NBA its true WAY more often then not (See John Hollingers article on ESPN from yesterday to see the numbers)

3) Im almost posative that sasha the machine is actually wearing a bra starp on his head. see http://www.h...s/tip234.htm

for more details.

To tell you the truth, I think there's no such thing as a boring game. To me, all sporting events that I enjoy watching are exciting. Stop with all this "Boring game" talk. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A BORING GAME. Well, when it comes to Football, Baseball, and Basketball anyway.

Somebody send Ben a tape of a Heat-knicks game around 1993-94. STAT! Or a Phillies - Braves game from 1988... yuck!

I'm just kidding. It's a great point, Ben; but no one called it "boring"... I just don't think it was a great game. Not even close.

But we can stop the "boring game talk" just for you anyway...

Good article, T. Agreed with the TV timeouts - the length is astounding, and only forces me to boycott the products being peddled. Manny, I don't even know what to say...your brilliance is overwhelming. You're right, defense doesn't matter at all. We should all just play horse and call it a day. Also, I was completely unaware that Vujacic, Mike Miller, and your wife are the only humans that wear headbands. Thanks for the info.

Your sarcasm is astounding...

Do you remember Michael Jordan? Do you know how many guys played incredible - even "perfect" - defense on him and yet he still scored?

That is the point. Great offense will win games over great defenses. This is why the team that scores more usually wins.

Will a team with a great defense win a lot of games? Sure. Because there aren't many Michael Jordans out there.

Have you heard the term "unstoppable" - they never seem to say that about defenses, do they?

I'm going to suggest that the astounding sarcasm was the point. And as made the original article, Kobe Bryant is not Michael Jordan, and we're at Defense 1, Offense 0.

BTW - sometimes great offenses miss open shots against pathetic defenses too.

Point being a great offense will make more shots than it misses... and great defenses are RARELY accompanied by prolific offenses.

Also - I don't consider EITHER of these teams "great" anything...

Manny, you wearing your wife's headband? It's on too tight, might want to take it off. Sure there are special players like Kobe that can get their shots off in any circumstance, but offense is ALWAYS largely based on luck and pace. Defense does not involve luck, it involves concentration and teamwork. And no basketball offense makes more shots than it misses. Prolific offenses are almost always accompanied by great defenses. A lot of offense is all about the number of possesions and pace, which is determined by the defense.

I tried my wife's headband before but didn't like it (I think it makes me look as gay as Mike Miller). I'm growing my hair for charity and have never had long hair before, so I'm still figuring out how to deal with it.

My head is too big for her bands anyway...

As for "No basketball offense makes more shots than it misses"???

You obviously don't remember the last time the Celts and Lakers met up... do you Mr. Smarty Pants?

"offense is ALWAYS largely based on luck and pace."

Always? I didn't know the triangle offense was based on luck more than setting picks, getting spacing and rotating the ball to where the defense softened. I always thought that the pick and roll was a way of forcing the defense to pick it's poison and play on favorable matchups, here it was pace and luck the whole time!!! Holy Crap!?!?

"Prolific offenses are almost always accompanied by great defenses" - Oh, so you're a Suns fan, too?

Gibbylt1, are you being serious here? As Manny said, pick and rolls and screen and releases and triangle offenses and all of those set-ups cannot possibly be based on luck and pace.

Unstoppable defense? "They" don't say that, because it doesn't make sense. Defenses can't be unstoppable. They're playing defense.

Better defense = lower opponent FG% = more possesions for the offense = more wins.

Who is Michael Jordan?

A defense only wins as many games as it offense allows.

Who cares if you can stop every team if you can't score.

Open your mind for a minute and realize that no matter how many points you allow, you must score more to win. I know it's a deep concept, but give it a minute.

"Defense wins championships" (as overrrated a cliche as there ever was) means the team that gets stops when it needs to will likely win more games than a team that can't.

Say it with me:

Pau Gasol is a softy!

I think the Lakers were toast as soon as they put Gasol on Garnett. Lamar has the long arms and more athleticism than Gasol and he was set up with Perkins. Sorry, but Gasol does not handles anyone who can jump or has a jump shot. Did you see his attempts at blocking KG's shots? While he is good offensively when set up with someone like Kobe, defensively he is less than average.

I'm not saying that he is bad by any means, I'm saying that he is soft and folds like paper when faced with a man like Duncan or Garnett.

Michael Jordan didn't need a competent big man. And that's why no matter what Kobe does, he'll never be equal to the stench on MJ's jock.

I knew Horace Grant never counted.

The totem pole goes like this (at least for the modern era) for guards:

Michael Jordan

Kobe Bryant

Down the road, LeBron James

LJ will never be better than Kobe and he'll never be better than MJ.

And above all of them - a guy named Wilt.

One could even consider Dr. J above them too. If there is no Julius, MJ becomes a baseball player for sure.

LeBron absolutely has a wide open chance to destroy Kobe's legacy. Look at what they've done through the same age.

And to compare LBJ to MJ or Kobe is apples and triangles. LeBron is MUCH bigger and more athletic than both of those guys combined.

When it's all said and done (barring disaster), LBJ will be the Association's all time scoring leader. He simply started younger and faster than anyone and has the body to alter his game as he gets older. He could be a post player like Kkarl Malone but with better shooting and passing abilities when he's in his late 30's and 40's.

I think James has a better passing ability than Kobe, but he has to perfect his outside shot and make his free throws when it's crunch time. He still hasn't earned the "clutch" tag yet, but he's only been in the league for like 5 years.

James as all time scoring leader? Well I'll be sure to write that one down.

First off, MJ would be the all time leading scorer if he wouldn't have retired twice.

James started scoring points at the same age Kareem was in High School and college. It's not a hard concept to wrap your mind around.

At this point in their respective careers, LBJ is 6,000 points ahead of Kareem, 4,500 pts ahead of Jordan and almost 2,000 ahead of Kobe. And Wilt was a rookie at the same age LeBron was this season.

Kobe won't be able to sustain his scoring pace later in his career like LeBron will. Kobe is a face up player who won't budge anyone in the post. LeBron is only gonna get stronger and bigger.

I also happen to think LeBron is a better rebounder (and passer) than both Kobe and Michael.

PS - LeBron has a slightly better career FT% than the all-time scoring leader's career numbers (.728 - .721). So your argument there is "iffy".
