My Blue Jays

I live in a hockey mad town and I play the game myself and follow it loosely now. During the good 'ol days I followed the sport with an obsessive fervor that totally occupied my time from my formative years between the age of 8 all the way until I was a supposed grown man of 31.

Now whatever. I'd rather watch bobby flay's throwdown or NFL reruns.

So to the title of this article. I was a die hard Jays fan as well. Followed Toronto's 2 majors equally with passion. In the oldie days I huddled under the covers during the Jays' west coast swings back in the 80's and early 90s when all 162 games weren't televised. I had my radio under the blanket so I wouldn't wake my parents while I listened to the Jays blow another against the California Angels or whatever was on. Being in the east coast, I would be up sometimes until 1:30 on school nights. I had a such strong passion for this team, baseball before the strike. Also I followed the Jays during their struggles of early 80's, taste of success during mid 80's and bitter defeats in the late 80's.

Anyhow, my real point is I don't know what's gone wrong with Baseball in Toronto but it just is not a winner in all sense of the word. Its a 2nd tier sport compared to the Leafs. I really want the Jays to be the hot item in this town. Winning helps but I what I concluded over the last 10-15 years is that a stadium with flavor and character is the Sistine Chapel for any sports team. This mistake by the Lake (Lake Ontario for those who don't know) is some structure that could have been built by the ancient civilizations of Atlantis or the gaudy architects of the 80's. The Skydome aka Rogers Center is an outright blasphemy to baseball and the Canadian version of football. I'm an NFL fan if that matters.

I used to go to ball games at the Old Ex in Toronto and went to the Skydome in the early 90s after the Jays World Series heyday. I had to walk out of that nasty UFO bubble by the 5th inning. Hated it. Hated the experience and ever since. That concrete junk at least for myself as a native Torontonian, is the worst eyesore on an otherwise decent skyline.

I think if some mega corp with some cahoons and a vision could right this organization for prosperity by imploding that cocoon pod and building an open-air baseball-nostalgic park that has a view of the beautiful lake and the city skyline.

I love the Pirates' home park. PNC Park is a fabulous ballpark even though the team blows chunks.

I went to a ballgame last year at the Skydome. Sorry I can't call it the Rogers Center. The game featured AJ Burnett vs Andy Petitte before the 2008 All-Star break. It was a beautiful sunny day, Jays won and all should have been great. Yet I left feeling empty. It wasn't because everyone at the time thought that was A.J.'s last start with the Jays before the deadline. It was partly due to the team having a roster full of dud players who just don't have a winning mindset BUT it was mostly due to just watching a great game in that hideous SkyBubble. Oh did I mention the price gouging food concessions that are high-school grade quality. I could get a tastier meal from the shelves of a dollar store.

I'm so disappointed with the Jays over the last decade or so. In conclusion that pales in comparison to the SkyBalloon that masks as a ballpark.

Please, will somebody already put this archaic concrete disaster out of its misery.

I'm out. Go Jays.

So let me get this straight, you think the Jays would be more popular if they played in a venue more like ACC then Rogers centre? Winning cures a lot of ails and the Jays have been very bad for very long. Why would anyone give two shits about them when the all mighty Leafs just made the playoffs in 2003?

You bring up PNC Park, and that's a perfect example of a beautiful new ballpark that hasn't done a thing to revive fan interest in a city. Winning is what matters and what gets people to come to games. Just look at the record attendances at SkyDome in the early 90s.

And I think you saw a bit of winning mindset when Halladay wasn't traded. The Jays' front office think they can compete for 85 to 90 wins in 2010, if everything falls into place. If that happens, fans will once again become interested.

See, it's talking like that about your own stuff that made the Expos such a roaring financially successful, postseason success and winning organization...

A question for people who have never seen the 'Skydome" - would you want to when a "fan" says this about their own park and team?

You'd never hear a Rays fan bash the Tropicana Slantdome in St. Pete like this. And yes, every team should destroy their own stadium and build one exactly like PNC Park.

Go Rays!!!

HA HA HA HA!!! Where do you come up with such original jokes???

Holy crap, you should be a comedy writer!!! Such fresh and hilarious material!!! Woo... someone call Jay Leno!

Not only is it funny but it's so accurate and deep of an understanding of the geography of Tampa-St.Pete that it defies the simple logic that explains away "facts" and "statistics"!!!

Seriously, I gotta go change my undies, I think... - whoops!, I KNOW - I just sharted at another one of those "Some regurgitator makes a Devil Rays joke"!!!

If every team can't knock down it's stadium and replace it with an exact replica of PNC, Camden Yards would be a fine second choice!

Oh, and JuT... it's best not to talk "smack" using a team (Baltimore) that is 3-0 against the Phillies this season.... especially when the Phillies are 6-12 against the AL East this season... (1-2 against the Rays)

It isn't 2008 anymore, Dorothy.

So, are you going to counter my point, or just lament over "your" team's suckitude? There's big fans of every team, I get it. But geography isn't an excuse for not going to games. There's no where to park near Fenway, but they've sold out 500 straight games...

1st place is better than 3rd, no?

The Phillies went 4-11 verse the AL last year, but that turned out alright.

When you're done with the delusions, and have something worthwhile to add, let me know. Until then, just shut the fuck up...

No need to curse, tough guy...

Google Eart the Trop.

It's in St. Petesburg, Florida, NOT Tampa.

Ask the Buccaneers or Lightning if location matters in that area.

I don't need to educate you personally, because making it personal is clearly too important an issue for you.

But why don't YOU say something educated about the Rays before jumping into the "Let me defend the Red Sox because I'm a Phillies fan" pot of boiling putrid front-running water...

It's people like you that make me feel empathy for Yankees fans. Sure they were intolerable, but at least they KNOW and UNDERSTAND the game of baseball...

P.S. This is an article about the Blue Jays... I think it's far more acceptable for a Rays fan like me to talk AL East smack than it is for a so-called Phillies fan like you to jump into this conversation in order to battle the great Manny Stiles over regurgitated nonsense... nes pas?

Until then... take your own publicly profane advice, Mr. Site Administrator.

You know what's similar? The Isles in New York. They're a 2nd tier sport for the city and (unfortunately) the country. They're in a division with some of the richest teams (Rangers, Flyers, Devils) and their management is truly been disastrous after some serious success.

I think Toronto could really benefit from not being in that division (imagine how'd they do in the central or NL East/Central). Their payroll (80 mil) is essentially the MLB median, so its not like they're suffering from major financial issues (yet...but a lot of teams could be).

But you don't have to be the premier sport/team in a city to become successful. The Patriots went from pathetic franchise to model franchise in the span of roughly 10 years (with the hiring of Parcells; give or take). The Rams almost made that leap too.

Agreed on the example.

The Islanders have been a disaster and have been irrelevant to hockey for 20+ years.

Not sure it would make sense to go to the NL Central since they already have 6 teams in the division. Perhaps if you move the Pirates back to the NL East that can possibly work.

I just meant in a competition sense; not literal. You'd have to switch someone in and I'm not a big fan of moving teams in order to let them compete with other financial equal teams -seems like a dangerous precedent.

The problem with the Rogers Centre/SkyDome/whatever you want to call it was that it was built at the worst time possible, right before the so called "retro ballparks"

The SkyDome was built at a cost of $570 million. Not a cheap ballpark even by today's standards.

As far as I know the government is still paying off the SkyDome. (They underestimated the cost by about $400 million. Not making that number up.) So they can't just tear the place down as outdated as it may already be.

The Blue Jays just have more hard luck then anything. They just happen to be in the same division as arguably the two best teams in baseball over the last decade.

If the Jays were in any other division I'm sure they would have at least two postseason appearances under their belt since last winning the World Series in '93.

And Toronto is a massive city, so the small market excuse doesen't work.

The SkyDome just doesen't have the immediateness of a modern ballpark. The way the economics of baseball works today you need those in order to have a chance to win.

The best the Blue Jays can hope for is to follow the model the White Sox had. Take an outdated but new ballpark, and renovate it as best you can to bring it up to date.

Problem is the Toronto Argonauts, and now the Buffalo Bills play games there. Both of those teams would have to leave before you could even think of doing any serious major renovations to the place to bring it up to date, and I don't think they're going anywhere.

Blue Jays are just a victim of bad finances on the part of the people responsible for building the SkyDome, and bad timing in building the place.

That's a good point. Although, I don't think the Skydome is awful (let's go with that name...easiest to type). Think about how successful the Twins have been with the Metrodome (new stadium developments aside) and their financial situation is worse by comparison. Plus, while I'm not an expert on weather in Toronto, I'd imagine it'd rival Minnesota; a stupid place to build an open park (which they seem to be doing anyway). If I had to blame anyone, its the people putting the product on the field and not the field itself.

The Twins don't have to contend with the Sox and Yanks year in and year out.

The Twins have made the postseason four times since 2002 coming out of what my have been the weakest division in baseball in a few of those years.

You look at the standings in some of those years, you'll see the Twins at the top, maybe one or two teams at around .500, and everyone else is horrible.

It's only very recently that the AL Central has really fielded good teams.

If the Twins were in the AL East during that timespan, I'm not even sure they would have any postseason appearances.

Toronto could be doing better when it comes to developing talent, but they've had some of the best teams to not make the postseason in the past 15 years or so.

Over the past decade I feel Toronto has been a good team in a very tough division, which has prevented them from reaching the postseason. I mean they won 86 games last year, and finished fourth.

Overall I think the organization is just making the best out of a very tough situation.

Also not to get too off topic, but there are rumors beginning to circulate around alot of people in the know that Target Field (the new home for the Twins next year) could very well be the best ballpark in baseball when complete. The reason the park is open air as opposed to having a retractable roof is due to the high cost of installing the roof (over $100 million) where the park itself already costs over $500 million.
