Mr. Lister: The 9 Best Heavyweight Boxers of All-Time

by Mr Lister and Manny Stiles
created April 23, 2009, last edited November 23, 2009

This one's a breeze. Heavyweights only (Pound-for-pound and "Best Boxers, any weight" are different lists).

Here's the nine guys who didn't make the cut - and one standing eight count (no particular order):

Evander Holyfield, James Corbett, Ezzard Charles, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Gene Tunney, Floyd Patterson, Jim Jeffries and Jersey Joe Walcott. Note - Sonny Liston might have been on this list just because of his name, and he was that good of a boxer early in his career. But he was a quitter.

9 - Lennox Lewis. Lennox was the biggest guy on this list and in any other era would have been remembered as a true great champion. Lewis was champ when the sport was awash in controversy and waning in popularity. He was a hell of a fighter though. He had size, power, surprising mobility and was very underrated for his boxing intelligence. But he also had the weakest chin of any guy on this list.

8 - Larry Holmes. If Larry would have never spoken to the media, he'd be remembered much better. Early on he was Ali's sparring partner until Ali got tired of getting beaten up. Holmes was a superb tactician who had a devastating jab and reigned the division when it was perhaps at it's weakest. Then again, maybe he just made his competition seem so weak because he was so masterful? By the time Mike Tyson came along, Holmes was far too over the hill to even put in a respectable effort.

7 - Muhammad Ali. Called himself "the greatest", but he wasn't even the greatest of his time. He is certainly the most overrated of all time. Maybe he was the greatest at standing up while getting the crap beaten out of him? He wasn't a hard puncher as history portrays (only 37 KO in 56 wins) and he wasn't even a smart fighter most of the time. He had stamina and toughness, no doubt and he also missed his prime with the mess in avoiding the draft or we'd never know how many more fights he would have lost, would we?

6 - Joe Frazier. Quite simply, he won "the Thrilla in Manila" but only took the loss because his corner threw in the towel first. Ali didn't want to go another round. Smokin' Joe did. It was perhaps the best fight in history and under today's rules, with 12 rounds instead of 15 would have gone to Frazier every time. He's ahead of Ali because he was a better boxer than Ali.

5 - George Foreman. He ruled two eras twenty years apart, there's something to be said for that. He also cashed in on his fame more than any boxer ever. Big George is perhaps the hardest hitter of them all and if not for all the controversy surrounding his "mysterious" illness in Zaire, he might have been champ for a long, long time.

4 - Rocky Marciano. 49-0. Undefeated is undefeated. Sure he didn't have the competition as some of these other guys and at 5'10, 185 lbs, Rocky wouldn't likely beat anyone else on this list, toe-to-toe but he was as tough as they came. He took on all challengers and sat them all down. That's what gets you only to fourth on this list.

3 - Jack Dempsey. When scientists name a species of aggressive fish after you, you made an impact in your field. Dempsey was a hard puncher, an aggressive attacker and was hands down the most punishing boxer of all time. He was a brutal savage who would destroy an opponent whenever he choosed. He fought like a starving tiger.

2 - Jack Johnson. Allegedly had an official 89-2 record but also fought perhaps hundreds of exhibition fights. He was everything Ali wanted to be. Jack was brash, loud, braggadoccio and had the skills to back it all up. Like Ali, Johnson missed some time defying and fleeing from American law. He was also the motivation behind the search for "The Great White Hope" - an effort to dethrone the black champion with a white boxer. By today's standards, Johnson would be a sloppy fighter as he had the tendency to just stand in the middle of the ring and slug away. He also tended to prop up opponents to extend matches because he was being paid by the round. Then again, Johnson sometimes fought 50 or more rounds with handfuls of opponents in a single night. He helped popularize the sport world wide, wore fur coats and fancy hats creating the "pimp" look and even notched a few U.S. patents in his spare time. There are still ongoing efforts to get his record exonerated for the crime of defying the Mann Act.

1 - Joe Louis Barrow - 69-3 (or 68-3 depending on who does the counting) career record. The Brown Bomber was so good, he is remembered only by his first two names. He could put anyone on their butt anytime he wanted to. If the media coverage of boxing when Louis fought was equal to the attention Mike Tyson got, Louis would be bigger than Babe Ruth in American lore. In one round, he altered the world's consciousness when he defeated Max Schmeling in front of Adolph Hitler in Nazi Germany. And he galvanized the nation during WWII when he said "We will win because we have God on our side". He was as close to "the perfect fighter" as you could dream up. He had the speed, the power, the will, the chin and absolutely ran the show once the fight started. He was also champion longer than any other heavyweight fighter in history. A great American and also the Greatest Heavyweight Champion ever.

Wow! You got a lot of balls picking Ali at #7. But other than Foreman and Marciano ahead of him, I think you make some good points.

Still, I will always have Jack Johnson as #1 in my book.

The great thing about these lists is we could argue about them until were all blue in the keyboard. And they're still fun.

He is tied for number 10... Not in the top 9!!! Ha ha!!!

I agree with Mr Lister that he's not a top 9 boxer.

Tyson was fiction. He was the great media hope to save the great art of boxing. He was done for once Cus D'Amato died. It all went downhill from there. Then Robin and Don King screwed him out of everything. He was a slugger and not a boxer. He couldn't handle guys with above average jabs (see: Buster, Evander, etc.). Jeez, even the designers of the Nintendo game "Mike Tyson's Punch Out" knew that! Personally, I would even take Razor Ruddick over tyson even though Tyson won both their fights. Ruddick tore Tyson up the first time - messed his face up awful and broke some ribs - but had to stop because he broke his wrist punishing Mike early in the fight and was forced to box with one hand... literally.

Iron Mike wouldn't have beaten any of the 9 ML put up here in their prime...

One of my great regrets was not hunting Tyson down and interviewing him when we both lived in Scottsdale. I know a lot of people that met him - 50% say he's nuts and 50% said he was cool and fun - I guess it depends where you ran into him because he was quite the clubhopper, too. I know he'd be some good conversation...

While I don't think Tyson is a top 9, I'm not so certain that the '87 young and hungry model wouldn't have stood a chance against any of them. On his day, his power could snare a win. Look at Foreman's absolute destruction of Frazier in '73. Pre-Douglas and prison Tyson had the drive that could have done similar things. It would all depend on the opponent and their mentality. if anyone wanted to go war in those early rounds, good luck. I know that he was back from a break, but I wouldn't underestimate the Holmes result.

Holmes was collecting social security when they fought!

Holmes was stale and slow. Plus he came out with that (not so IQ-sufficient as Holmes grew to be) thought that he could slug away with the young buck.

Holmes in his prime would have worked Tyson over - at any point in his career.

Holmes was only 39 and was sitting 48 and 2. By no means was he at his peak, but he did fight another 25 times after it. Remember, he beat an undefeated Ray Mercer and then took a hot Holyfield the distance five years later.

Finally someone who gets it Ali is the most overrated fighter of all time. Frazier is ahead of Ali because he beat him twice. If Fraziers corner doesn't stop the third fight Ali wouldn't have come out the the 15th because Frazier beat him to a pulp to the point of Ali pissing blood. Maybe Ezzard Charles a little higher, but other than that good list.

"Rocky wouldn't likely beat anyone else on this list, toe-to-toe but he was as tough as they came" - are you forgetting Marciano vs Louis in 1951 where Marciano won by TKO in round 8? Not a bad list of fighters, you could definately have some other boxers included but I think your order is where you completely stuffed it up!

Given that Ali is - according to both himself and most laypersons - the GOAT, I think that he is very much overrated.

That is not to say that he isn't any good, it's just to say that he's not *that* good.

I'd be interested in a P4P listing, although my tendency is to limit these things to the past forty years because it is difficult to judge earlier eras.

It's very hard to compare athletes across eras, particularly when there aren't that many "videos" of the older boxers, but Foreman, Frazier, Ali, Holmes, and Lewis all fought each other and/or lots of boxers in common, and there are lots of good "videos" of his fights around, and Ali, without question, is the best of those 5 by a large margin. In fact Lewis, Frazier, and Foreman don't really belong on this list at all. Before he got banned for refusing to be drafted he had fights where the other fighter would go round after round and not land 1 punch to the head. When he got older and took some good hits he showed that he could take a punch better than anybody on your list, except maybe Johnson and Marciano. He was the best "ring general" of all-time(among heavyweights). He was the best combination punchheavyweight, etc, etc.

I don't think Ali should be as low as 7, but I will agree that he is somewhat overrated.

Glad to see Larry Holmes on the list. I think people still hold it against him for ending Ali's career, which is why they don't want to give him credit for his in ring performance.

Holmes was also coming up at the same time that Don King was beginning to take over boxing, and ultimately ruin boxing.

Now titles mean nothing, and the two best fighters in a division never square off against each other.

It's a shame too, because a guy like Wladimir Klitschko is virtually ungradeable on these types of lists because of it. I mean can anybody name one guy who he's fought in the past three years without having to look it up?

Frazier won the Thrilla?

What fight were you watching, Ali beat up Fraziers face so bad that he couldnt even see. Futch knew Ali was ahead, and the only way Frazier could win was by KO in the 15th, and that wasnt going to happen given he couldnt even see.

Ali was also beat Forman and you have George ahead of him too?

I just dont get the logic, Its pretty clear Ali was the best of his time, he faced all top contenders in an era which had the best competition

Rocky Marciano is the # 1 heavyweight ever. He fought most opponents which were much larger in size, weight and reach. Joe Louis had a 6" height, 9" reach and 30 lbs.weight advantage. Come on and give me a break. Rocky fought the best the world had during his reign and many times came back from being knocked down to win with a late round knockout. Not to mention a perfect boxing record.

Your placing of Ali is utterly farcical. Either you know very little about boxing or, much more likely, you have a personal grievance. Johnson's only achievement was to be the first black champ - did he beat anyone of the calibre of Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Patterson or Liston? Wise up chump.

Jack Johnson beat Jim Jeffries, easily the best champ up to then. Johnson also beat Sam Langford, and totally outclassed all other fighters until he got old. I like the rankings on this list. I like that the author mentions the "mysterious illness" that affected Foreman in 1974. This is a documented fact often ignored. Don King, a convicted felon, had access to both fighters in 1974, and King knew that Ali as champ would make him a LOT more money than Foreman. 'nuf said!

I am dumber for having read this.

1) You say we don't know how many (more) fights Ali would have lost if he wasn't stripped of his title in 1967. One can easily say zero as he was 29-0 at the time. He might have eventually lost but the presumption is he doesn't as he was undefeated.

2) If the fight in Mniilla ended after twelve rounds Ali would have won as he was ahead on points, ergo:

http://www.b...mp;cat=boxer

3) How could Frazier and Foreman be ahead of Ali when he beat went 3-1 against them and beat Foreman when he was past his prime and Foreman was in his.

You probably have #23 as #7 on your all time NBA list.
