Mr. Lister: The 12 Pro Sports Teams With the Best Die Hard Fans

by Mr Lister and Manny Stiles
created April 20, 2009, last edited July 14, 2009

Simple. These are the 12 pro teams with the best die hard fans. (College teams are another list!) There's no arguing these teams have a thorough following and a fan base that goes above and beyond what most other teams will ever dare to dream of experiencing.

-Twelve teams just missing the cut (no particular order): Seattle Seahawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Yankees, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Flyers, Colorado Rockies, New Orleans Hornets and Los Angeles Angels.

-12. Pittsburgh Steelers - The thing about Steelers fans is they are EVERYWHERE! Sure, most Steelers fans started their allegiance when the Steel Curtain was gathering rings in the 70's but they haven't stopped giving their all.

-11. Utah Jazz - A ton of their success has had to do as much with recently deceased owner Larry Miller as Stockton-to-Malone. But you'd be hard pressed to find a more rabid fan base than the Salt Lake City crowd. Like many of the towns on this list, SLC only has one team to root for, but they go all out for their Jazz.

-10. Chicago Cubs - say what you will about the Bleacher Bums and the art of hopelessness that makes a Cubs fan so endearing, but Chicago fans know their stuff. Anybody who can root regardless of the pain is a die hard fan indeed. The fact that the Cubs still dominate a rich sports landscape in Chicago is proof that Cubs' fans are awesome.

-9. San Antonio Spurs - Stuck part way between Houston and Dallas, San Antonio is a heritage rich town. There's art, culture, food and history. All of which pale in comparison to the beloved Spurs. Not just another holdover from the ABA, San Antonio is a prime example of how to mutually take pride with a community and one of the classiest organizations in sports. Most of the NBA's biggest crowds have been at San Antonio games when they were regularly filling the huge Hemisphere Arena.

-8. Boston Bruins - Despite all the recent success of the other pro sports teams in Boston, the B's still have a tremendous following. One of the Original Six franchises has it's rivalries and it's tradition but today's bruins fans are downright nasty as they come. Turn on a Bruins game and the crowd is always on edge. The fans are INTO the game and they only want to see the home team do well. Passion amounts to a four letter word to Bruins fans in a town where it is more fashionable to be seen than to root.

-7. Oakland Raiders - How crazy do you have to be to still be a Raiders fan? The Raiders have been on the long side of lean for a long, long time. yet the crazies still give their all to the organization. Maybe it has more to do with the mentality of life in the east Bay, but Raiders fans are second to none on the "all out" scale. Remember, this franchise left cozy, cash-flushed Los Angeles to return to the East Bay.

-6. Portland Trailblazers - Blazer fans have put up with more crap than most fan bases. These fan LOVE to make a game into an all day event. Rarely do you see tailgating at an NBA game but they are commonplace in Portland. After some lean years, Portlanders are finally seeing their team blossom much like the rose gardens of the city itself.

-5. Kansas City Chiefs - Chiefs fans are die hard... and LOUD. They certainly aren't frontrunners since the team hasn't been very good in forever. They come out to cheer their faces off. Arrowhead Stadium is perhaps the greatest atmosphere to experience a sporting event - a stadium full of vocal, knowledgeable and downright hopelessly optimistic fans. When you consider the Chiefs' following, remember that Kansas City is not that big a town yet they pack that stadium every game with red and yellow.

-4. Montreal Canadiens - Hockey is Canada, Canadiens are hockey and since Canada's biggest city - Toronto - has fallen far by the hockey wayside the history, the glory, the honor and the insatiable fans have flourished in Montreal. Les Habitants have a seething following, a sometimes downright violent fan base as a riot could erupt if all is not well. Pride and glory goes a long way.

-3. St. Louis Cardinals - Middle American values, but also geography play a big part in the Cardinals' success. When Jack Buck used to announce games on AM Radio, half of America could hear them. Fans of the Cardinals range from Louisiana to the Dakotas, from West edge of the Appalachians to the East edge of the Rockies. St Louis fans know the game as well as any fan base. They are respectful, traditional and live and die with their beloved Cardinals.

-2. Cleveland Browns - LeBron James will probably win an MVP and a ring in June. The Indians could win back-to-back-to-back World Series. So what? All that matters in Upper Ohio is how the Browns are doing. The "Dog Pound" is so die hard that the NFL HAD to put a team back in Cleveland after Art Modell packed up and took the original franchise to Baltimore. The town is crazy for the Browns that they wouldn't allow the NFL to do anything except bring back the name and logo as it was. Teams have left and been replaced before, but not like the Browns were. They were dead and gone, yet it was a necessity that they came back in the same form. THAT is a die hard fan base!

-1. Green Bay Packers - Packers fans are #1 for three simple reasons: The "fans" own the team, Green Bay has probably the least pleasant weather conditions and it's the smallest town in America with a professional sports franchise yet they routinely have a tremendous outpouring of followers. Tradition is rich - going back to the area's meatpacking heritage and that spills over into the tailgating. Sure, there isn't much competition for things to do around 'the frozen tundra' so football IS life in Green Bay. When a city nearly doubles in size on game day, it's a quality fan base. Packers fans have suffered through some very lean years, but they can be proud that they truly are the most die hard fans in pro sports.

Missed the cut with the likes of the Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and OKC Thunder? wow...

And until this season, the Bruins had been averaging 25th(ish) in the league attendance numbers...if you assume 16 playoff teams, that means another 9 teams that didn't make the playoffs also sold more tickets on average...

They have passionate fans, but so do a lot of other legit hockey fan bases (Flyers and Rangers come to mind...but so do all the Canadian teams)...

Nope...just can't agree with this list at all...

Eh, I don't think attendance = die hard.

I can kinda see where M.L. is coming from here with the Bruins (not saying I totally agree, either) but when the Sawx, C's and Patriots are the hot tickets in town, you still gotta be pretty much into the Bruins to choose to watch hockey instead.

Let's face it, Rangers fans are following blindly because they live in new York and don't know any better (It's always going to be a baseball town) and Flyers fans are Flyers fans only because they pine for the days of the Broad St. Bullies... (Maybe if I wear a Flyers jersey, people will think I'm "tough"!)

The term "Best Die Hard Fans" definitely needs to be defined. Does it mean that the fanbase as a whole has the best fans, or that amongst the die hards in the fanbase, they are the best compared to other teams? Because the Bruins die hards are few in number, but I think they're of excellent quality. The same goes for die hard fans of many hockey teams. Hell Winnipeg might have the best die hard fans in the NHL without having a team.

It's also weird to see no Philadelphia teams on the list. And what about the Saints? And how did the Yankees "just miss out?" The Yankees? Die hards?

I've lived in Boston for 6 years and I can count the number of diehard bruins fans I have met on one hand...

Look, there are folks who come out to all the games...same with the Cs pre-2007 (or Sox, roughly pre-2003)...and those are your diehards

but to call them more diehard that some others, doesn't add up...

then again, this is an inevitable pissing contest...and yes, I am annoyed that not a single Philly team is on the list

But were there ticket prices as high?

I have met more diehard Bruins fans over 40 than my own age, even though I rarely spend time with people over 30. I don't know bout you, JuT, but when I was in school, I could count the number of old people I met on 1 hand. But it begs a question, are these diehards really diehards? Or did they fall in love with the Bobby Orr/Phil Esposito Bruins as kids and simply stuck with them through the bitter years? Is that diehard? I think it is one form of diehard.

And JuT, again, what does "Best" Diehard fans mean? The Maple Leafs have more diehard fans than just about anyone in the NHL, but are they of better quality than Senators fans? How do you compare the two? The list is problematic, which is why it's good, it generates discussion.

I bet people legitimately forgot what the Boston hockey team was called.

All trash-talk aside, the Bruins didn't need a PR department until this year. Before this season, the fans who would go to games were going no matter what. The people who weren't, weren't going to go no matter what slogan or promotion was ran. This year, they only needed PR to say "Yeah, we all love the Sox, Pats, and C's, but we're good now too! Plus it's easy to get tickets!"

Makes you really wonder about the Sixers though...fuck it, they're not legit by any means...

I'd argue that a city has probably 2 or 3 diehard sports teams...

To me, philly features the best fans in football and hockey...

For boston, its probably the sox and a tie between the Cs and Bs...I'll give the edge to Cs fans because there was a lot of interested even during the Pitino years...

I prefer quality over quantity. I go to a Bruins game and I see the widest array of sweaters (jerseys to some). Orr, Bourque, Esposito, of course. But you also see Terry O'Reilly, Cam Neeley, Andy Moog. Even recent departures like Joe Thornton, Sergei Samsonov, Martin LaPointe is popular. And these are all legit sweaters bought at the time these guys played. I go to a Sox game and occasionally see people wearing Ted Williams or Carl Yastrzemski jersey t-shirts. And at Pats games, there will be a token Hannah or Grogan throwback. And #33 is a popular number at Celtics games. But Bruins fans seem to have more love for a history that's nowhere near as brilliant as the Celtics.

And these Bruins fans bought their sweaters KNOWING the ownership wouldn't retain these guys. The Celtics certainly have a larger diehard fanbase in Boston, but I think the elite diehards of the Bruins whoop the elite diehards of the Celtics any day.

This is going to hurt- Toronto has the most die hard fans not the Habs. Ow. Toronto hasn't made the post season in about 5 years, hasn't won a cup in about 40 years but still they pay hundreds of hard earned loonies to watch the Leafs lose. Toronto is a Leafs town, its a damn religion there. Those Hab fans are very fickle and don't let them fool you but are the some of the biggest bandwagoners around. Really though in Toronto you have Raptors, Argos, Blue Jays, Toronto FC, The Rock, kinda the Bills and whats the hottest ticket? Those crappy Leafs.

I agree with Jut that some Philadelphia fan group should be on here. The fact that anyone goes to Eagles games (let alone that they sell out) is a testament to how dedicated the fans are. They've been the victims of bait and switch tactics so many times over the years and yet they still come back. I can't speak for Sixers or Flyers fans as I don't follow basketball or hockey, but the football and baseball fans have stayed with the Eagles and Phils through thin and thin. I also think that Steelers fans ought to be a little higher as well. I don't buy that KC, Cleveland and Oakland fans are more dedicated than the Steeltown bunch.

If I had to pinpoint one Phillies fan awesome moment, it would be when Bob Boone flubbed the pop foul and Pete Rose grabbed it and made the out. It was like a sign that all those little BS crappy things that plagued the Phils and their fans throughout the years were about to be exorcised. And the Phillies knew better than anyone that the 1980 World Series was for the fans. Obviously, the players and management reveled in it, but they knew that the moment was for the fans.

By this logic, they should be #2. It's true - Steelers fans are everywhere. I'll agree that Steeler fans are hardly in the "diehard" category. They did suffer some ridiculous playoff defeats in the 90s, and Cowher's status as coach was questioned by the national media after three losing seasons. But Steeler fans knew better - Cowher wasn't going anywhere unless he wanted to go.

in effect, the Phillies desired to trade Brogna. The Red Sox didn't offer enough and/or pay enough of his salary...so the Phils released him. I cannot confirm how much of his salary the Phils were obligated too, but its rumored to have been a significant factor of why they opted to release him via waivers than trade and take on a little extra salary

"He was a cult hero cuz his name sounded Italian "

He is Italian.

Brogna was hurt most of that season, if you check, he was released on Aug 3rd and had only played 38 games to that point. He suffers from a degenitive (sic) arthritis in his back which ended up being the cause of his retirement the following year. The Phils were faced with the option of activating him, sending him on a rehab assignment, or releasing him. He was physically unable to perform on a regular basis, Brogna is from Massachusetts, so the two teams worked out a deal.

Both teams split his remaining salary.

He still battles the arthritis, he works out two hours every morning to get loose, he has a gym in his house that makes any LA Fitness look like the corner YMCA.

I can't believe I didn't think about them yesterday but how about Buffalo Bills fans? They're insane about their team, as painfully bad as they can be. They have bad weather like Green Bay, but are about a dozen championships shy of the Pack. Yet they still come out to their shite stadium, from Rochester, Syracuse, Erie, Canada.

They're the heart and soul of that region. To me, they epitomize die hard, because they will never stop falling in love with the Bills every fall.

Vikings aren't really that close. The city loves to hate the vikings. The fans are overly critical and react way too frequently. They struggle to sell out the dome when they're not winning, and overall, vikings fans are (for the most part) fair weather fans. I think it's hard to put any minnesota teams on this list because only the twins and the wild come close, and yet twins fans follow them as more of a past time than as passionate fans and the wild are still a relatively new franchise, so we have to wait and see with them.
