Spring Training Notes--March 1

GAME 3: Starter Zach Duke was pounded for 2 homers in the first, a discouraging sign after a season in which he became arguably the league's most hittable pitcher. Dan Moskos gave up 2 runs in one inning and Marino Salas (acquired in the Torres deal) blew a save. The Bucs did get two off Reds ace Aaron Harang with impressive days at the plate from Bautista, Paulino, and top prospect Andrew McCutchen. Steve Pearce hit the only Pirate homer. FINAL: Reds 12, Pirates 11 (1-2).

Other Notes

The always quotable Ian Snell after yesterday's strong outing vs. the Phillies:

"I own Ryan Howard now," Snell said with a big smile. "I love to face him. It's a challenge and we've had a good rivalry ever since we were starting out in the minor leagues in 2001."

Howard laughed when told of Snell's comments. "I'd own myself, too, if I always quick-pitched myself," he said.

Howard would then tell of how he and Snell had pretty much faced each other all through the minors, so they sort of know each other. Kind of a neat little relationship.

Howard, great as he is, hasn't done much against the Pirates as far as I can remember.

The Pirates are following the LA Dodgers and some other ballparks by bringing in two all-you-can-eat sections this year. Very cool, but kind of complicated. Details here.

My man Masumi Kuwata hurled a perfect inning of relief in Friday's "B" game vs. the Phillies.

Pirates-Rays Sunday at 1:05. Gorzelanny will pitch one inning, and Paul Maholm will start.

what the hell happened to zach duke...

and yes, (i'm not looking it up) for some reason Howard bats something like .180 against the pirates with 1 bomb...weird, isn't it...

good thing it doesn't matter, because most of the phils' other big bats bat close to .300, if i remember correctly...

Also, I'm still holding on to the hope that the pirates rotation is just the detroit tigers circa 2002-3...mark it down, they've got a great group of young starters...

I agree completely..our starters have talent and theres no reason we can't be like the tigers or rockies. unfortunately thats our only real hope to be competitive this year..

Looks like the Zach Duke debacle is on course for another solid year or HRs and short outtings.

Rays could go all the way in 2008. They can't have a long streak where they get into a funk like they did last year but I think this team is too good for that.
