Mets Win

Johan Santana has been traded. Johan is heading to New York, but not the Yankees. He will become a New York Met. The 2 time Cy Young winner is headed to New York in exchange for four prospects, outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

The Mets apparently thought that that was a better deal than the Red Sox and Yankees put on the table. The Mets needed to make this deal as they are in desperate need for pitchers for the upcoming season. Santana will make $13.25 million dollars this year and will most likely be signed to an extension. It is said that he will seek about $20 million per season for five or six seasons.

The trade is tentative, which means that the teams both have 72 hours to negotiate contracts or they can veto the trade.

The Mets made a great move here despite the fact they still need to sign Johan Santana to the contract extension to make the trade official. I expect that to get done at any time now. At this point, you are right where the Mets needed to address their pitching issues. The Yankees already had a better pitching rotation than the Mets entering the offseason, so their sense of urgency to get a high-quality pitcher wasn't as high as the Mets. Here, the Mets let Tom Glavine walk, there are still question marks surrounding the long-term health of Pedro Martinez, how Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez will hold up and if John Maine and Oliver Perez can deliver solid 2008 seasons. The Mets have the money, it's a matter of how well they spend it, especially on Santana here. Actually, Santana is possibly looking for a deal as long as 7 years, so we'll see what the final terms will be.

It's a great deal considering the Mariners are offering more to Baltimore for Erik Bedard.
