About the Author

Sj-hypocycloid
Mike Frangione has engaged himself in the noble calling of sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great learning experience and also a great deal of fun.

Mel Kiper: Too Much To Hope For?

I will start by saying that I don't really follow college football. I like Penn State, but truth be told, I am a very casual fan.

I add this disclaimer because I was listening to Mike & Mike in the Morning this morning, and they, of course, had Mel Kiper come on to blather about the draft.

After the usual niceties, they played a Kiper clip that basically intimated that if Matt Ryan is not drafted within the first 8 picks, he (Kiper) would turn the annual draft picking annoying over to Todd McShay.

I don't know much of anything about Matt Ryan. I just looked him up and confirmed the little that I thought I knew about him: That he was Boston College's quarterback. I am surprised I got that much right.

Is it too much to hope for Ryan being drafted 9th or higher? Lest anyone assume otherwise, I realize this scenario is unlikely to play out no matter what happens.

But I can dream, can't I? I can only imagine how nice it would be to never hear Mel Kiper again!

Too bad Al Michaels, Bob Costas or Tim McCarver didn't make similar statements.

* * *

Oh - I should also mention that Will Purdue has been guest hosting this week. I think it's him...Anyway, he made a Costas-esque blogger comment. He used the typical condescensing mother's basement reference but changed the locale to Hackensack, New Jersey.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. We can always hope. However, do you really think he would do that. He'll just do what he always does. Vehemently criticize every team that passed on him exposing Kiper for the know-nothing fool he is.

Sadly, I don't think he would ever go through with this. Too bad.

Mel Kiper is one of the reasons I refuse to listen to Mike and Mike anymore.

I actually like Mel Kiper. And frankly, I think he might be one of the luckiest men on the face of the planet (despite his ridiculous hair). Think about it. How much fracking money does he get paid to do ONE thing for TWO MONTHS out of the year, and basically nothing for the other 10, and still be regarded as a big part of the industry?

I agree he's very lucky to do what he does. But that doesn't mean I have to like him. I still find him annoying and whiny.

Mel: I tell you Chris, in 20 years, I see little Timmy as a possible top 5, maybe top 3 pick.

You know what I find annoying? It's the bloated sense of self-importance he projects. And when he talks, he seems to be taking a deep breath every time, as though he has an endless stream of words that are ready to come out. There is rarely a break in his wordfart or any semblance of a conversation when he really gets going.

i really dont see his "role" teams shell out millions a year for professional scouts yet this guy who never even played tecmo super bowl is quick to tell teams about themselves but on the other hand he is inexperienced as hell and gets paid to be an "expert" can't knock him

He is a lucky SOB. Doesn't make him any less grating. Haha - never played Tecmo....If that's true, they should fire him now! :-)

I would much rather have Mel Kiper than Todd McShay. Mel actually knows what he's talking about...I've read so many articles showing that McShay doesn't know anything, that he 'plagarizes', and that he can't back up his opinion too well. I wouldn't want to listen to his trash long at all.
