McNabb makes a Demand, A Diva Listens

In what is probably a huge non-story in the NFL, given the New England Patriots hoopla and the phenomenon that is Eli Manning, the Philadelphia Eagles are just an afterthought in the sports spectrum.  They finished the season 8-8, albeit with the toughest schedule in the NFL (by winning percentage against), missed the playoffs by one game and hobbled to a 3-0 finish prior to seeing fallen son, Donovan McNabb ride off to Illinois or Arizona or wherever he decides to rest (and probably deservedly so).

But then, Donovan spoke.  The company man, who’s supported Andy Reid like the man that gave him the plan, spoke out, against the company and for the people.  It’s going to be a few years before we ever know who the alpha and omega were.  Was it McNabb, the electrifying QB, who could run with the likes of Michael Vick (without the dogs) and throw with the likes of Peyton Manning (with the soup) or was it Andy Reid, the cautious optimist who delicately laid a foundation, constructed and offense and created game plans so intricate that he had to acquire and draft players smart enough to understand it (please see Freddie Mitchell, Matt McCoy, Matt Ware and so on).

Donovan and Andy.

Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid have been two peas in a pod since each assumed the lead dog position
Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid have been two peas in a pod since each assumed the lead dog position

Andy and Donovan.

Arguably, a match made in heaven (Eagles Heaven), where playoff runs are made and Super Bowl trophies are, at the very least, considered

But of all people to rile up McNabb, it was the 16-0 Patriots, the pro-bowl offense (literally) of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, Wes Welker (not to mention fallen Eagle Jabar Gaffney and often forgotten, but still pretty damn good Kelly Washington) and Montanaesque Tom Brady.  McNabb, usually quiet (and working hard) in the offseason suggested that the Eagles should "secure some playmakers in all three phases of the game."

Better yet, he knows he needs to be the guy:

"Maybe some of those playmakers are already on the roster but have struggled with injuries, myself included, that have held us back a little.”

Andy Reid wasn’t happy about it.  His response was one of almost shocking anger, if not some distaste in his franchise Quarterback.  Reid responded in a comment by saying;

"I know, as players, you have to be careful about saying that because those are your teammates that are being replaced.  Most players don't get into that who really care about their teammates on the other side."

Perhaps a scathing comment to reveal the falling of the franchise QB, but McNabb seemed unphased and defended himself.  McNabb noted the teams mediocrity and is seeking improvement; Donovan just wants the best product on the field.

"We didn't disrespect anyone when we traded for Takeo Spikes or signed Kevin Curtis last year. I don't think the Patriots were being disrespectful to Troy Brown or Reche Caldwell when they brought in Moss, Stallworth and Welker. Over the past few years, when the 49ers added Nate Clements, the Seahawks added Julian Peterson, the Giants added Plaxico Burress, the Colts added Adam Vinatieri, it was in an effort to add playmakers. In each case, the team identified a way to improve and they took action.  I don't think that's being disrespectful to any of my teammates.  It's certainly not my intention. I bet that anyone who wants to see the Eagles win - from Mr. [Jeffrey] Lurie to the entire locker room to every Eagles fan who bleeds green - would agree."

Just to release from the diatribe for a moment, that’s when McNabb finally clicked in Philadelphia, at least to me.  The much maligned QB, in the City of Brotherly Love, went for it and he took it.  Donovan McNabb dove at every Eagles fans heart strings, where they want it most, in the trophy case.

Eagles defensive back Sheldon Brown would disagree.  Brown was on an edition of Comcast Sportsnet in Philadelphia disagreeing with McNabb.  Brown believes that, much like Reid, McNabb’s comments were disrespectful and that the team in the lockerroom now is capable of getting the Eagles to the promised land.

Sheldon Brown, a former pro-bowler, also backed Terrell Owens in 2005.  The same Terrell Owens who, while whimpering, defended Tony Romo in perhaps, the highlight of the Eagles offseason (and its only January).  Truth be told, Eagles beatwriter Phil Sheridan believes that the birds still have a shot.  Citing the meltdown and apparent Phoenix like rise of Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants or the shocking (or not so shocking, for Eagles faithful) collapse of the Dallas Cowboys, Sheridan believes the field is wide open in 2008.  Sheridan furthers his point by mentioning that the Eagles (agreeing with McNabb) and only a few moves away from being an elite team again.  Moreover, he believes that something that Tom Brady is often praised for, checking down and dumping off, is something that McNabb is often criticized for.

Then, like a great Green hope, out of the Queen city came a shout.  A cry.  A match for Donovan.  Chad Johnson was on the ESPNRadio morning show, Mike and Mike in the Morning (with Mike Greenberg and former Eagle Mike Golic) and was asked about his status with respect to the Cincinnati Bengals.  Johnson replied by stating:

"I was labeled selfish and a cancer, and it hurt," he said. "Fingers were pointed at me this year. If the team and the organization wants to further itself (make the playoffs), I think you need to get rid of the problem.  "It hurt me. To do me that way and not to have my back. Things were said, and nobody came to my defense."

Chad and Philly Need Each Other.
Chad and Philly Need Each Other.

Maybe this seems like another TO fiasco or a problem waiting to happen or maybe the timing and the player are perfect.  Chad Johnson in Eagles Green is a match made for the blue collar city.  Johnson, already used to playing in an icy football loving town, would be adored by the fans and probably respected by McNabb.  He has shown a willingness to work with an organization, as he and Carson Palmer raised each other to such a high level and Johnson’s talent, matched with that of fellow receivers Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis would make the Eagles Corps among the best in the NFL.  Add another playmaker on defense, perhaps an end, tackle or defensive back, and this team is primed to cut through the giant question mark that is the NFC.  This sentiment has been echoed by other eagles fans, such as this website: www.bringchad2philly.com

And if it doesn’t work?  Well, assuming the TO paradigm, McNabb will be on the final year of his contract.

And the Bears don’t seem to be finding the QB of the future anytime soon.

This is a great article...

Chad Johnson could be great in a Eagles uni next year (even though I'd rather have this guy first...

Personally, I agree with McNabb in that bringing in play-makers is how creating a dominant team is built (ie New England). Of-course, scouting, drafting, and coaching are still all extreamly important in their own right...

Westbrook can't do it all hiself, Trent Cole would be that much greater if he wasn't constantly double teamed, McNabb (heathly) is one of the best in the league, Kevin Curtis is a good third option, but big time play-makers are needed (WR, DE, CB, MLB)...

Widereciever is the number one issue; someone who is an established number one and a deep threat...

Personally, I would like to see a dominant middle line-backer. Someone who is big, yet fast (like a Ray Lewis or Nick Barnett) that can get after the ball-carrier and bring 'em down side-line to side-line. Someone who can shut down the run yet be able to drop back and pick off a pass. Someone who can tackle the likes of Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs, and Clinton Portis one-on-one every time (6 out of 16 games are against these talented backs). BUT, most importantly, someone who will strike fear in opponents before they even step on the field, then reak havoc when they step on the field...

Well considering Omar Gaither is a good MLB, he played Safety before in college so he knows how to cover and hit. I think we're set there. Kevin Curtis had 77 catches for 1,110 yards. we just need someoen beside him as well. 2 1000 yard receivers would be nice. We do need another DE for Cole and another CB.

I like Gaither. Falcon, I think the person you're describing is the Jeremiah Trotter Ray Rhodes drafted and those guys aren't easy to find

Gaither is admirable. I don't think he'll ever be more than an occasional pro-bowler (maybe once or twice if the eagles make a run).

I think a DE is a position you look to fill via depth. The DEs are about average right now, especially since Cole and Thomas were steals in the draft. Depending on the FA and draft, they'll add another one or two, but it won't be blockbuster Jevon Kearse like additions. Same with CB (baring someone being available). I bet they go out and add a decent vet and then draft an heir apparent. Perhaps that means a CB (to replace brown when he moves to safety) or a Safety (to replace dawkins straight up).

unfortunately, with Lito's health, the eagles basically need Dawkins next season

If they get another WR, Curtis may not be looked at as much, so he likely would not get 1,000 yds, but still a great three option (behind Westbrook and Receiver X). Gaither is solid, but how nice would it be to have a dominant line-backer sitting in the middle of the field? That would bring the entire defense together, and they could stop anyone... right now they are a vulnerable (playing solid then collapsing)...

its a valid point, but you won't see it in the Andy Reid era. They devalue LBs for one and secondly they commit that cash to other positions. You would have never seen the secondary as it is today (which features 3 former pro-bowlers) w/o giving up the LBs...who are young and decent... Plus we haven't seen a lot of Stewart Bradley in the middle...and what we have seen has been very good

Unfortunatly, you are right, Reid doesn't understand the value of line-backers as play-makers. I am still calling for the end of the Reid era, I do not think he will ever bring a chamtionship to Philly, and the team should move on without him. I would not mind two horrible years if the team was able to successfully rebuild under a young, talented, defensive genuis (such as Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh)... just my personal opinion, not like any of this will happen in the next five years

well, a focal point of the article, while it may not have been well articulated is that McNabb's time is now.

This team has a 2-3 year window (i hate saying that) to win now or wait till the next era. If they're gonna win any time soon...and they have a good shot at doing that, they need to build up now and prepare for a jeff fisher like rebuild post 2010.

Reid is an above average drafted and a lot of people don't realize that he gets it done a lot better than many other NFL coaches...

and as far as Tomlin? No thanks...

You have to agree though, outside of his above average drafting abilties, he's not a good play caller. He's too conservative with a QB who can burn defenses with his arm. It's not secret McNabb can run, but he has one hell of a cannon. More fit for a run n gun type of offense. I wouldn't mind a hybrid of Run and gun and WCO to both utilize McNabb's superior arm power and Westbrooks versatility.

agreed, his playcalling is very odd...nothing worse than having a top 5 RB and not running the ball on 3rd and 1...

Run and Gun...you mean the duck and chuck? (Buddy Ryan Reference)

That's sorta what they had with TO. With Johnson I think you can go back to that, but I'd prefer an affinity to running/WCO and the threat of the deep ball versus a constant throwing, which ended up killing the eagles in 2005...

So your hybrid idea is probably pretty close...McNabb does have an accuracy issue though, but it isn't terribly evident when throwing deep

I'm hoping for for a linebacking corps involving both Gaither and Bradley, and Spikes if he can stay healthy, if not Gaither was effective as a outside linebacker last year, and the best linebacker availble (Lance Briggs, Demorrio Williams, Tedy Bruschi, Karlos Dansby, Boss Bailey) could be pursued without worrying about position.

BUt if you can incorporate a duck and chuck with a top WR(like Johnson) that draws defenses away from Wstbrook adn we can move into WCO mode with dink and dunk passes and screens and westbrooks amazing cut back ability on runs to close out games.

Stallworth is a great guy...his health is a concern, but as a WR and a person, he's a fine player on any team...

My idea with Johnson is 2-fold:

For one, he's very good. There is no top quality receivers available via FA and arguably any via the draft (especially if the eagles draft one), therefore he might be the best available (by any means of availability).

Secondly, the Johnson experiment can be just that. McNabb has 3 years left on his contract and they're all big years (10 mil plus cap hits) but very little of it is guaranteed. So the moment johnson or McNabb cries, McNabb can be removed, if he even has a career after that (Think Steve McNair leaving the Titans...this situation could be very similar).

To me, this mitigates that risk, that i feel many people would have because of Johnson's potential transgressions

I was just looking up the Eagles roster. There tightends are are either under-utilized or they aren't very good. TightEnd's are integral to the offenses that are succeeding this year. Patriots-Ben Watson and Kyle Brady, Chargers-Antonio Gates and Brandon Manumaleuna, Giants-Jeremy Shockey(injured) and Kevin Boss, Packers-Donald Lee and Bubba Franks. The secondary TE's are mostly used to compliment the starters but help to show that the position is going to be used in the offensive scheme. If you have great tightends, they utilize inside linebackers and that opens lanes for runningbacks like Maroney, Tomlinson, Jacobs, Grant and potentially, the Eagles Westbrook.

LJ is an FA (on March 1). Celek is a good TE, but he's a work in progress.

Geodan, I believe the eagles need a top flight TE (in terms of offensive ability). Kinda like Chad Lewis in 2000. Dallas Clark may be available and he's that kind of player. But that type of move would eliminate the home-run hitting WR we're talking about...

this could be a potential one or the other kinda deal...

I believe the eagles are looking at about 15-20 mil in cap space for next season. They will be adding (or trading and resigning) players this off-season.

Let's use the Patriots as a prime example. Their offense is predicated on what it forces the opposing defense to do. 1. If you take out Moss (a #1 receiver) and replace with a #2 (any #2) receiver then defenses play your receiver one on one and there is a strong safety playing zone coverage and the run stopper. 2. If, instead, you never through to your tight end (he can't catch a ball if his life depended on it or it's not in your scheme). Line backers move up and fill A and B gaps or are free to blitz. 3. Take out your possession receiver, Welker. Now when Tom Brady reads his progressions his third choice has to go to a running or full back in the flats. This leaves you without the ability to fake the run or use the running back to max protect. 4. Take away quality threats down field ( i.e. #1 receiver and or agile tight end) and there are no running back, wide receiver screens.

We all know it's about pieces to the puzzle. But it is also about using those pieces. A defense has to believe that every skilled position player is a threat.

The Eagles would benefit from attaining a #1 receiver ( Johnson or Alexander, etc.) and a quality tight end either through free agency or draft. You loose too much in trades. Your evaluators of personnel have to be top notch.

That's how the Patriots are doing it.

1) A power RB to counter westbrook. the 2 back system is back and this is good for the Eagles if they adopt it now. 2) Get a #1 reciever. Letting go of Stalworth was DUMB!!

The Power RB you are describing is Duce Staley...and you're right, it worked. I agree and I don't. For one, the two and three player schemes they had worked very well, but B-West is the man and really can handle the load. They need more of a najeh davenport guy then a brandon jacobs...

Stallworth is certainly not of the caliber of johnson or owens...

That was a calculated risk by the eagles, knowing that stallworth would take a relatively large amount of money to keep. Getting Curtis over Stallworth was smart, IMO (because of the offensive scheme) but they never effectively replaced stallworth. Of course, Stallworth never really played all that much to begin with...which had a lot to do with letting him go

And you're right, its a now or never scenario..either McNabb gets some playmakers or the eagles might as well trade him...

Unfortunately Buckhalter gets hurt every other year and Tony Hunt never truly got an opportunity to prove himself. He had an impressive touchdown at the goal line in the only chance he was given that showed potential for being the power back. Another interesting situation is Ryan Moats who showed glimpses of potential at the end of the infamous "TO Year". Moats was targeted by the Broncos as their next feature back in the draft, which ultimately led them to draft Maurice Clarett. He doesn't have the power that Hunt does but he could play a role similar to Darren Sproles in San Diego as a fast third back.

True, he had some great runs this year, but runningbacks don't simply overcome major sugeries forever. The wear and tear that runningbacks endure on a game to game basis is unrivaled at any other position. At one point Buckhalter was called as fast if not faster than Westbrook by the Eagles coaches. I hope they hold onto Moats but honestly don't know the severity of his injury, so I can't say he will be as effective as before. For these reasons Hunt should be given a chance. Westbrook was also drafted in the third round, and many don't seem to realize it took him multiple seasons to reach where he is now.

If we got Johnson that would also open up the draft to get some depth on the D...also having Ocho Cinco would let the eagles score WAY more points which puts less pressure on the defence letting them do what they do best and blitz more. His potential reward is much greater than the negatives that may happen...If the eagles don't attempt to get him ( or Fitz if he does show interest to leave the cards) then something is wrong with the eagles i think
