Mantle Ruth DiMaggio what was the difference.

I am sure a lot of people, particularly Yankee fans, have debated that question for years now. Mantle was better than DiMaggio and Ruth, or DiMaggio was better than Ruth and Mantle. Well, since I can only give an opinion on 2/3's of it, I have had to rely on my father's opinion and experiences for his take on Ruth as bias, as he is the only one around the family who has seen all three of them play at their peaks.

Mickey Mantle was a far better athlete than DiMaggio ever was, but they were two different types of body styles and playing styles. If Mickey came close to anyone it would be Ruth, when Ruth was only 185 lbs and 6'3" (and could run like a deer.) Pop use to talk about seeing him later as he got heavier, but remembers him the first time he saw him in the 1924 World Series at 6 years old as being overweight, but not as huge as some of the movies have pictured him. My grandfather was the one who used to tell all us kids that when the Babe was younger and just starting to pitch and play in the outfield, you couldn't see a better player anywhere. This included Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Mel Ott, and (according to him) even Shoeless Joe Jackson, whom my grandfather was great friends with.

There are a lot of DiMaggio fans everywhere in their late 70's and 80's, who remember him running in the outfield at Yankee Stadium. I just barely remember seeing him in the 1950's before he retired and compared to Mantle well, not even close. Mantle covered twice the ground that DiMaggio did. My Pop and grandfather both said many times that DiMaggio was smooth and one of the better hitters of his day, but wasn't a switch hitter and didn't have near the power of Ruth or Mantle, and for that reason placed him last of the three. Not having seen Ruth, but hearing about him from people that did, I think he must have been as good or better than Mantle, with the one exception that he didn't switch hit. On the other hand, Mantle didn't pitch, so maybe it is a push here. Mickey Mantle did some wonderful things in the outfield and on the bases, and so did Ruth and DiMaggio. All stole bases throughout their careers and their lifetimes averages are extraordinary at the least.

So, one positive thing I can truly say about the three is that all of them are Hall Of Famers and deserve to be there. But if I had to make a final pick on the question of who was a better ballplayer, it would have to go with my father's and grandfather's ideas. Mantle was hurt a great deal in his career and played hurt, but doing this hurt his numbers and later resulted in shortening his life, his lifestyle, much like Ruth, caused both of them to die earlier than they should have. DiMaggio was like them unbelievable on and off the field players, and lived a long and friutful life until his late 80's, and there is nothing that can be said about him that isn't positive with the only exception being that he was very hard to get to know personally because he wanted his private life separate from his playing life. It worked for him, but he wasn't the personality that either Mickey or Babe was both bigger than life and lived it the same bigger than life. But I can't think of any three players I wouldn't want to have in my outfield on any given day in any given situation. How would you pitch to DiMaggio then Mantle and then the worst case scenio, the Babe?

I'd take Yogi Berra over DiMaggio, too - in a heartbeat.

I know DiMaggio was "very good" and a excellent hitter, but he was the Derek Jeter of his day. DiMaggio gets a lot of undeserved credit because he was popular.

He was slow afoot and his 56 game hitting streak is BY FAR the most overblown, pointless "record" in sports.

The year he hit that 56-game hitting streak, Ted Williams STILL outhit him for the season - EASILY. I'd rather have a guy that produces all season long than a guy who gets a string of luck in the middle of it...

Mickey Mantle - pound for pound (when he was healthy) - may have been the greatest player ever - if only for a short time. He certainly defined "Country Strong" and hit what is still accurately considered the longest measured home run in baseball history.

I think if Mantle played today - with medical advances to help his knees - would have erased a TON of records.

But, we'll never know.

BTW, DiMaggio stole 30 bases IN HIS CAREER! And he also had 105 errors in the outfield in his career - ONE HUNDRED FIVE!!! And you know that the scorers were easy on him, too...

Joe DiMaggio's career numbers compare favorably to Larry Walker's... except Larry stole 200 more bases, hit 22 less HR and played on MUCH crappier teams.

And don't try that "DiMaggio miss years during the war" stuff - he only played 250 less games than Walker - who missed a ton of games himself, playing only more than 143 games in a season ONCE.

Detractors and blind lovers of "Joltin' Joe" will state that Joe struck out less times. But he also walked 130 less times than Walker...

DiMaggio lost more homers playing in New York than Walker gained by playing in Colorado, and that was a lot.

I've been on this site for a year and a half now, and you haven't done it yet.

And before you go all ARod on me, remember one thing. It was a guess. There was no knowledge involved. ARod opted out, found no takers, and crawled back to the Yankees on his knees begging. Big facking whoop.

Tim Beckham? Another guess. Thirty six hours before the draft, the Rays were taking Posey. They didn't take him because Posey wouldn't back off his contract demands. Who told you?

I did.

Who told you two days before DY was traded that he would be?

I did.

Who told you how the AFL worked, and a players numbers are insignificant? That they come here to work on specific aspects of their game and whatever else they did, or didn't do, didn't matter.

I did.

Some expert you are.

Not.

Tell Kurt Rambis I said better luck next time.

Johann Santana has been awesome for the Red Sox, too...

I don't care if you're right or I'm wrong. But if you want to get into pissing contests with me because your ego feels threatened - I will "win" because that mindset can't win anything for you... After all, if either of us were the "REAL expert" here... riddle me this - WHY are we here???

And I don't really consider Larry Walker to be a better player than DiMaggio - at least not by much.

I just think that history has been too kind to DiMaggio and that the sheep herds still glorify him because he married Marilyn Monroe and is mentioned in Simon and Garfunkel songs INSTEAD of what he accomplished on the field. No one seems to be willing to back up what they say with simple facts - I DO. And I backed my theory up with a ridiculous argument (Walker) that almost proves a point. Almost - for a reason...

He was the Derek Jeter of his day - MORE popular than he was good.

And I'm NOT "Yankee bashing" - IN FACT I started my entire "argument" with "I'd take Yogi over him too", then I mentioned how all things evened out, Mantle might have been the best baseball player that ever was.

If I'm bashing anything it's the people who fall for the lore; who romanticize the past as if those days were somehow better while the facts of reality state - there's nothing new under the Sun.

Like Jeter, if DiMaggio wasn't a Yankee and/or he never wins a whole bunch of rings (mostly due to the team, not the individual) then we talk about DiMaggio in the same vein as Duke Snider and Johnny Mize. Really really good player - but not worth the legends that carry his legacy. The guy is an urban myth.

And if you want me to give a better player today to compare him to, Vladimir Guerrero - nearly identical AVG - HR - 2B - and only 500 less AB in his career... and oh, yeah MANY more SB.

BTW - DiMaggio hit 148 HR at home and 213 on the road. His AVG at home was .316 and .333 on the road.

A big difference? Sure...

But if you're going to use the argument that Yankee stadium HURT DiMaggio - then what did it do to Mantle, Gehrig and Ruth (and Berra) - ALL of those guys have better road numbers... ESPECIALLY Ruth.

And Yankee stadiums park effects are small compared to other parks of the day anyway... parks that DiMaggio DIDN'T get his numbers diminished by - See: Polo Grounds, Forbes Field etc.

The point of this article was that DiMaggio wasn't as good as Ruth or Mantle - I whole heartedly agree.

And we have both stated on several occasions - and agreed that Gehrig was a better hitter than Ruth.

There was no "pointlessness" to my words. The fact that I can build an argument with Larry Walker and Vlad Guerrero (who I was hanging onto just in case) proves that DiMaggio isn't as great as everyone wants to think he was. He played in a dead era for stars and he was relateable - and Italian guy in New York - so he got attention off the field that had a way of overmagnifying his true abilities.

He was slow. He was a poor fielder. He had some pop and never struck out. Sounds like 13 years of a healthy Ted Kluszewski to me... not the Baseball Jesus he was made out to be...

One key difference is that both Ruth and Mantle scored a lot, but Dimaggio was known for his slugging. And I'm not talking about at the plate, either.

Thanks Cmdrporter for bringing up the baserunning ability of Babe Ruth who stole home ten times. Babe Ruth was a complete player and an outstanding pitcher. I was fortunate to see Mantle, Maris, Berra and Whitey Ford in Kansas City in 1962 and it was a doubleheader in which Ford pitched a 16 hitter and yet pitched 8 2/3 innings in a 13-6 loss to the Athletics on Aug. 18, 1962.

Back then they didn't worry about pitch counts. Correct the above score to 5-4 win by Athletics with Ford pitching a complete game 16 hitter. His record was 13-6 not the score.

Same old same old will it ever end...hope not then there would be nothing to talk about. Today it is the NFL and players ass meeting and are they going to do something about all the problems and troubles the players old and new are going through. I have always thought that the owners were completely unfair to any of the players when it comes to benefits packet. Owners are always saying that 60% of revenue goes to players but I really wonder if that is the truth. The NFL holds the rights to the players numbers and online and offline sales of at the junk they sell and that is in the billions and the players don't get any of that revenue. The new president of the leagues talks a good story but the end is still the same. Owners control him just like they controled the last commis. He has as much power and we do to change the price of gas. HEy Manny Yankees still in last place with that 197 million dollar payroll or whatever it is. Going to be an interesting summer for baseball. Whitey Ford was a good pitcher on the right team and with a very good catcher. Anyone know what he said about how hit the hardest and longest homerun off of him....he was righthanded and only hit it one handed 17 rows up in the third deck and broke the seat.
