The New York Yankees are WORLD Champions again for the 27th time by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3. Andy Pettitte picked up his second win of the World Series, and Pedro Martinez took the loss. Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record of 6 RBI's that was set in 1960 by second baseman Bobby Richardson.

Matsui also became the first DH to be named the MVP of the World Series. 27 Championships might be a record that might never be broken by an other team, except the Yankees who will shoot for number 28 in 2010. We shall see.

yeah, the Yankees won.

The World somehow seems right again. Goliath as MVP.... how fitting.

I'm glad A-Rod, Tex and C.C. got their rings but now we're all gonna hear how much a winner #2 is.... Ugh.

Still, it beats listening to Red Sox fans blither blther mindlessly...

Only shows what everyone has been saying over the years, Money buys anything and this years' series winner proves that point to a T....Philly pitching was no where to be found and they quit on themselves and the Phillies hitters still haven't found out how to hit a ball yet. Ryan biggest joke of the year with more strikeout than Bonds and looked lost out there at times during this series. But not being a Yankee fan I can't get real up for this years series but it was a case of the best team money can buy won finally. Now how much is it going to cost the Yankees for next years team. Pitchers a year older and hitters not hitting with the same style and average that they did this playoff. f 2010 season should be very interesting and 12 games to long again. Just wait until the steriods are brought up again regarding some of the individual Yankees and how they look even after more than ten years in bigs. Congrats to the 2009 World Series Champs NYY....

As for The oldest man's comment, the main reason why I believe Ryan Howard had a crappy game was due to the fact that he was not batting third. I remember when David Ortiz batted right in front of Manny Ramirez before Ortiz got injured. They were considered the best #3/#4 hitting duo in the league. Why was Ortiz so good? Well, Ortiz had such a high batting average (.300+) for years was because of the fact that he was getting easy pitches to hit. This can also account for why he's come up big for the Red Sox time after time; it is known that Manny Ramirez has does well with runners in scoring position throughout his career.

Ryan Howard had 13 strikeouts in the six games alone, and he's now in the record books for the most times a player has struck out in one World Series; he surpassed Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals when he struck out 12 times in 1980. He was batting in the #4 spot. Chase Utley tied the record for the most homers in one World Series (5). The Yankees served Chase Utley almost nothing but fastballs, and served Ryan Howard nothing but curve-balls and junk-pitches.

Howard needed protection (for a change) and Utley needed baserunners. Manuel should've made that switch, IMO.

Jason Werth? Howard struggled because he can't hit lefties. He batted 4th all year (for the most part), why change it?

It's actually funny that you say that. I do remember off the top of my head that the only home run he hit was a two-run homer off of Andy Pettitte (a lefty); and he only had three RBI's in the entire series.

In Game 2, he struck out three times against AJ Burnett and once more against Mariano Rivera

And in Game 6, Howard walked twice when Burnett had that bad outing.

It seems like he didn't do much with righties either.

So... what do you do when you have a problem where one guy is struggling due to the abundance of lefty pitching (and he's not hitting well against the one righty in the 3-man rotation) and another problem where another player on your team is on fire, but does not have many players on base? I would've switched them in Game 6, maybe even game 5... when it mattered.

And what about Jayson Werth? He's a good contact hitter, that's for sure. He can definitely put the ball in play and is a threat in the Phillies' lineup. BUT, he's nowhere near as dangerous as Chase Utley was in that series. CC SABATHIA, one of the most dominating pitchers in the game today, had a really tough time getting him out. And this is a lefty vs. lefty we're talking about. It didn't matter who Chase Utley faced: he was still tatering balls left and right... until game 6.

*sigh.

You're citing Howard not hitting Burnett as a reason? He's a streaky player who cooled off and faced Burnett once when he was unhittable and another time when Howard was slumping.

He did hit one homer off of Pettite and looked foolish against Sabathia (who didn't look good in this series at all).

Utley's been locked into the 3 spot for over 3 years...and you want to switch them now? You switch them and Utley just has some dude hit into a DP before he bats?

Sounds like your issue is with Rollins and Victorino (me too)...Utley produced, Werth played decent and even Ibanez came up in spots (he was also hurt and doesn't have great lefty splits either).

Sometimes, that's just the way the baseball rolls. Hamels looked like shit, the bats didn't lift Pedro in game two or Blanton in game 4...

I do expect to see them make it back next year

Not at all. I'm not saying that Howard doing mediocre against Burnett as a reason. I'm just saying I find it ironic that he did better against Pettitte than against Burnett.

Sure, Chase Utley is a good contact hitter, JuT, but why do you think that is? He is awesome at putting the ball in play... that's a given. But it also has to do with the fact that he's batting in front of Ryan Howard. He's a dangerous batter, and if you put him in front of someone who is tatering pitches left and right, I would take the risk and change things... especially when you're down 3-1 in a series. Something was wrong. Rollins got on base a couple of times... but not enough. Victorino batting .182 in a World Series at the top of the lineup is inexcusable.

The numbers may not say it, but Ibanez and Werth... even Carlos Ruiz, did well. They came up big when they needed to. But then there was the Lidge BS and a couple more things that led to the four losses.

All in all, the issue was probably the fact that the #1 and #2 guys in J-Tumble and Defeat-o (sorry, I just had to put that in there :P ) weren't getting on base... and the fact that batters were doing well with no runners on base.

I see your point, but Werth put up great numbers this year (and so did Ibanez, pre-injury...and even afterwards, he was fine).

Werth was even pretty solid in the Series...can't help it when Rollins and Vic are auto-outs and so is Howard. Utley was killing the ball because they could throw to him (4 solo shots) not because they had to

Besides, Sabathia and Pettite were challenging hitters all playoffs

I predicted that Werth was going to be one of the best sleepers for a fantasy team. He can run, he can hit for contact, he can hit for power... everything on offense. Ibanez was awesome throughout the season when he wasn't on the DL. However, when people say that they're shocked with how well he did... I reply, "Why? He has always been a good hitter. It's just that now he's playing on a winning team, and he's getting more chances to get RBI's with runners on base." You could make the argument that they both had an all right series. They definitely worked the pitchers' counts, they got the runs in when runners were on base, and they did better than the other players who are considered the other players who are supposed to be more than just good: Howard, Rollins, and Victorino.

Ibanez has been hurt since his DL stint (hernia)

He had surgery today and his 2nd half was really bad in comparison to his first...

Werth's actually a fully healthy full time starter for the first time in his career...so you're right Romi

But besides Utley, I don't think anyone had a good series. Werth played alright and so did Ruiz...that's about it

I don't follow baseball and even I would recommend the switch. Howard needed protection so he would see better pitches and Utley needed base runners. Make the switch. Maybe it would awaken Howard. Maybe he would get better pitches. Maybe Utley would stay hot. Maybe, maybe, maybe...

I've been saying this for months: after the three big acquisitions in Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and AJ Burnett, if they don't win the World Series this year, I don't know when they will.

The Yankees did it, in a very good battle between the best team in each league (by far). At least it didn't end in a sweep or five games.

A-Rod finally has a ring. And the four (Pettitte, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera) won their fourth 'ship on the fourth... of November.

Seriously, congratulations. I seriously think that this team is one of the best teams we have seen this decade.

Pssst! Phillies "fans"... you lost. Get over it already.

Two championships in 127 years; one would think you'd be able to handle it.

Why can't you face the simple fact that being the best team in the NL isn't THAT much of a feat when Brad Lidge is your "closer"?

The Yankees didn't "buy" the Championship, they won it. They were hands-down the best team in baseball all season long - ask the defending AL Champs and the vaunted Red Sox. If money was all a team needed to win then the Yankees would have won 10 titles this decade...

Besides, it's not like the Phillies have a small-market revenue stream or a shoestring budget type payroll...
