There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Majerus shoots himself in foot, St. Louis bishop calling for his head

According to a story online on USAToday's site, the Associated Press wrote that a Roman Catholic archbishop said Tuesday that he will ask officials of Saint Louis University to take "appropriate action" against its basketball coach, who said in a television interview that he supports abortion rights.

One of the game's winningest coaches, Rick Majerus made the comment at a weekend rally for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke declined to say what the action against Majerus should be, saying that was a decision for the Jesuit university. But he said the coach is a leader and shouldn't support views in opposition to church teaching.

"I'm concerned that a leader at a Catholic university made these comments. It can lead Catholics astray," Burke said by telephone as he attended March for Life anti-abortion events in Washington. "I just believe that it's of the essence for people to understand as a Catholic you just cannot hold these beliefs."

Burke said he will seek to speak with university president Rev. Lawrence Biondi, or a representative, when he returns to St. Louis.

During an interview with KMOV-TV at Saturday's Clinton rally in suburban St. Louis, the first-year Billikens coach identified himself as a Catholic and called himself pro-choice. At first when asked for his views on abortion, he said he didn't want to "go there," but then said he is personally "pro-choice."

Saint Louis University spokesman Clayton Berry said Majerus was at the rally as an individual, not as a representative of the school.

Majerus has one of the best winning percentages among active college basketball coaches with a 432-154 career record. Most of those wins, and a 1998 Final Four appearance, came at the University of Utah, which he left in 2004 due to health concerns. Before taking the Saint Louis job he worked as an ESPN analyst, and accepted and quickly gave up the coaching job at Southern California.

Burke set off a national debate in 2004 when he said he would deny Holy Communion to John Kerry, then the Democratic presidential nominee, because the Catholic Massachusetts senator supports abortion rights.

The archbishop resigned last year as board chairman for the Cardinal Glennon Children's Foundation because of a benefit-concert appearance by Sheryl Crow, a native Missourian who supports abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research.

Saint Louis University is a Jesuit, Catholic university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation. The University fosters the intellectual and character development of more than 12,000 students on campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States. Through teaching, research, health care and community service, Saint Louis University is the place where knowledge touches lives.

The St. Louis campus has been the site of the central administration since 1888, when the Jesuits moved the University from its original downtown campus. Several colleges and schools make up the University campus as well as the Medical Center.

The Madrid campus was established in 1969. The first freestanding campus operated by an American University in Europe, this campus is recognized by Spain's higher education authority as an official foreign university, the first U.S. institution to hold this endorsement. The school, whose nickname is the Billikens, is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. They are as of this writing 10-8 overall and 1-3 in A10 play and sit near the bottom of the league's standing. They next play LaSalle in Philadelphia this Saturday after coming off a 54-53 loss at home to Temple.

Majerus is at a political rally. This sounds like a private decision to me. I would say that perhaps it's due to his longstanding as a successful professional and most likely some sizable campaign contributions.

I guess someone can stretch the facts and say that his popularity or his public persona is due to him being the basketball coach at the St. Louis University.

If his hiring was on condition of catholic principles then the school can have a problem but if it's due to his good standing as a teacher of young men in the sport of basketball then Majerus is on solid ground.

Wow, political beliefs and religion. When haven't they been a bad mix?

As a SLU basketball fan from the old days of Erwin Clagget, Scott Highmark, Donnie Dobbs, and H Waldman; the biggest concern this season for me other than the lack of scoring is Majerus saying to that media "It's like being a step-parent. I didn't pick them. They didn't pick me." It may seem as a nothing comment to some, but I expected better out of Majerus especially considering it seems he is in this (slu's rebuilding process) for the long haul.

I'm guessing that the ACLU is already looking into this matter. This could be a huge store in the works...

Some states have laws preventing employers from terminating employees for off-the-clock political activities (e.g. New York has one), but I'd not be surprised if there is an exception to many of those laws for situations wherein the activity is directly detrimental to the mission of the employer. Certainly, you'd not want the ACLU to be unable to fire its Director if he advocated for an amendment repealing the First Amendment, to use an extreme case. In Majerus' case, unless Missouri or St. Louis itself has such a law, he may be SOL (assuming the school does indeed fire him). If they do have such a law, the question is whether this falls into an exception, and it may.

This is an extremly interesting case right now. STL U is a private school so a lot o fthe rules do not apply to them. I would like to see how the school treds through this shaky grounds.

Private, yes. But it also answers to the Catholic hierarchy in Rome, so there is a problem.

Maybe because of this:

Majerus should have left it at that. For him to make that statement, considering he works for a Catholic college that stresses Pro-Life, is moronic. It's like a vegeterian saying they like meat.

I just think it's a little funny that he could lose his job for this, even though it's less offensive than his on-air comment about wanting to see Ashley Judd at a Kentucky game so he wouldn't have to stop by the adult video store on the way home. THAT is a comment worth firing someone over.

Granted, that video store comment was somewhat off color. At the same time, Ashley Judd ain't bad looking, even in a Kentucky tshirt. I think that Majerus should apologize to the Catholic community because [and I'm not trying to force dogma on anyone] abortion is so contrary to the teachings of the church. If he's Catholic (which I am not sure of), then he should do some MAJOR penance!

Hey, I agree. And I'm not knocking him for thinking it, but you have to be more conscious of what you say on the air. I also think it's important to stress that there are TONS of Catholics who are pro-choice Democrats. He wasn't at a school function, he's not trying to lead his flock astray, so I have a hard time seeing how Majerus is so wrong. He is Catholic, and he might be opposed to abortion himself, as I am. However, it's also possible that he believes, as I do, that it is not the function of the state to enforce religious beliefs.

I also think it's important to reinforce what was said earlier about this Archbishop. This is the same one who stepped down from a charity because they had a function where Sheryl Crow played. She didn't say ANYTHING about her political views, he stepped down just because he didn't like her views. You can have your religious views, but that is just small-minded bigotry. As is this current "controversy."
