MLB NL Championship Predictions

So here we are; the MLB League Championships. Obviously the playoffs wouldn’t be the playoffs without a few upsets, and we had two of them involving Southern California teams (Note I don’t say Los Angeles teams; Anaheim isn’t in Los Angeles). The Angels fell to the defending champion Red Sox in a minor upset, but more stunningly, the Dodgers swept the Cubs to advance to the NLCS.

In baseball, you not only have the daunting task of outlasting your division or every other wild card team over a 162 game schedule; you also have to do so without peaking too early. Timing is everything; the Cubs may have been a better team then the Dodgers for most of the year, but in the three games that it mattered most, the Dodgers were the better team. No excuses, no curses, they were simply the better team.

So with four teams left, the question is now, who is simply the better team in these two series? Unfortunately for those of us who try and predict things, it is only simple to see who the better team was AFTER the fact.

National League Championship Los Angeles Dodgers VS. Philadelphia Phillies

How do you cap a team like the Dodgers? On paper they are a solid to above-average team; but they rarely seem to play like one on the field. They usually either play like duds, or they play like champions. In the Cubs series, they proved quite convincingly that when they are on their game, they can beat anyone in the league. So what can we expect from them against the Phillies? The Phillies out-slugged Milwaukee, and with their powerhouse line-up, they can mash the ball against just about anyone. They have experience on their side as they made the playoffs last year.

But as is usually the case in baseball, this series will come down to pitching. Just how good are these Dodger pitchers? Pretty amazing to see such an impressive 1 – 2 – 3 punch without Brad Penny, Jason Schmidt, or Clayton Kershaw’s name involved in it. Derek Lowe had a strong regular season and always steps up big in the playoffs. Chad Billingsley has established himself as a true ace this year. And Kuroda has stepped right into the MLB without issue, and while he isn’t overpowering, he keeps you in the game; which, when the Dodgers are on, is all they need.

The Phillies are just outclassed here; Cole Hamels is an ace and very dangerous, but he is also matched up against Lowe, a playoff veteran that isn’t likely to leave much room for error. Myers needs to be at his very best to match up to Billingsley, and while season win totals would certainly suggest otherwise (in Moyer’s favor), Kuroda and Moyer are pretty evenly matched. If it comes down to a 4th pitcher, Joe Blanton would face one of the game’s all-time greats in Greg Maddux. Old he may be, but he is still effective and a better pitcher then Blanton.

So the question is, can the Phillies hit their way out of their pitching disadvantage? If anyone can, it’d certainly be them. But I’m going to give the Dodgers the edge here; assuming the Cubs series is an indication of what we will see from them and not merely a façade, I can’t see them losing this series. If the offense could score on Dempster, Zambrano, and Harden, it is hard to see their bats going totally quiet against this staff.

PREDICTION: Dodgers in 6

On August 25th, Brett Myers beat Chad Billingsley, 5-0.

The season series was freaky, with each team sweeping a four game series at home. However, the Dodgers scored 27 runs total in the eight games, and Manny Ramirez was in the lineup for all of them.

On the contrary, the Phillies are a much better team top to bottom, the Dodgers are only where they are because they played 162 games in the NL Worst and then played three games against the Chicago Chokers<s/> Cubs.

You want a bigger upset than tne Miracle on Ice? How about the Dodgers winning more than one game in this series.

Well, I can add Kingsrule41 to the list of people who are not giving the Phillies enough credit. The Dodgers are sure getting a lot of mileage from beating the lackluster Cubs.

As for those Cubs, Lou was the manager of the 2001 116-win Seattle team that folded like an overextended bank in the playoffs? Honestly, nobody should be surprised that the Cubs sputtered in the playoffs.

Sj, quite the contrary... I give the Phillies plenty of credit. They won a much tougher division then the Dodgers', they have an outstanding offense, and when Myers is on and Moyer is locating his pitches well, the staff is more then capable. To be honest, if anything, I'm probably giving the Dodgers too much credit as opposed to not giving Philly enough.

Fair enough. I give you credit for making your case thoughtfully and without totally dismissing the Phillies. I think my reaction is fueled by the large contingent of folks telling us that the Dodgers have already won.

Tools like...T.J. Simers: Crap like this is what really sets fans like me off. C'mon T.J. (Total Jerk?) - is the 10,000 losses stick (one that has been used many times before this by better writers) the best you could come up with?

Kingsrule - best of luck to the Dodgers. I will, of course, be rooting for the Phillies. But...let's hope for a good series.

wow...is that article a joke?

The Phillies get the first two games here, their best pitcher in Cole Hamels starting against Derek Lowe, who is pitching for a new contract next year, as much motivation as any pro athlete can have these days. Advantage Lowe.

Well, if we apply that theory further, Pat Burrell should bat over .500 and hit 6 home runs because he's also playing for a contract.

The Dodgers will win because their rotation is top to bottom better than the Phillies. I have yet to see an expert suggest that any dodger's pitcher is better than Cole Hamels (they're not), but their 1-4 are pitching better than the Phillies 1-4

I liked this part though: But then it really turns ugly for the Phillies, who can only throw 100-year-old softball pitcher Jamie Moyer at the Dodgers and then just another guy in Joe Blanton.

Joe Blanton is 1-0 with a 3.32 ERA versus the Dodgers. Moyer isn't as good (5+ ERA), but then again...its jamie moyer.

There's lots of reasons to pick the Dodgers (Manny Fucking Ramirez!) but suggesting Derek Lowe is better than Cole Hamels because he's in a contract year or that the Phillies have 10,000 losses...to which Jayson Stark has pointed out, the current Phillies could care less (or even be aware of)

Let's stop with this Manny Ramirez thing now. How much did he contribute to the wins over the Cubs? Two solo homers. He's one freaking guy. If he scares people that much, walk him or plunk him. Or...be a man and stare him down. Last I checked, he's not hitting .950 or slamming 250 homers a season.

If they play the games smart, Man-Ram won't even be a factor. As I stated elsewhere, the Red Sox are doing just fine since trading this jackass.

And...you're totally right about the 10,000 losses. Why would anyone care? A team is around for 126 years, losses will pile up. What will people say when the next team 'earns' it's 10,000th loss?

I believe Atlanta is en route to that stop next, roughly 250 losses or so to go...and given their progress, I'm thinking 2011 or 2012 will make it inevitable... The Cubs are also close...maybe 2014 or 2015?

No one is playing for a contract more than Manny.
