Love for October

It comes but once a year, and it is finally here. It is October.

And October means one thing: the MLB playoffs... and they are ready to begin. On the last day of September the playoff picture got taken. And it is a weird one, with some great story lines.

The story lines to end the season were great as well. The Chicago White Sox needed to win game number 162, win a make up game against the Detroit Tigers, and then win a playoff against the Minnesota Twins, and got it.

Then you have the New York Mets' collapse, again.

But the teams in the playoffs have even better story lines.

The Chicago Cubs are trying to turn around 100 years of losing.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a big deadline move and over took the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Milwaukee Brewers are the in the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for their first playoff series win since 1993.

The Tampa Bay Rays are in the playoffs for the first time ever.

The Boston Red Sox are on the brink of a becoming a dynasty.

The Chicago White Sox barely make it in and Griffey has a chance to get a ring.

The Los Angeles Angels are the best team in the league.

So on to the match ups and predictions.

In the National League:

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs

Rafael Furcal is back for the Dodgers and that could hurt them or help them. The Dodgers really only have one bat, and they are not even paying for him. Manny Ramirez has the big bat for the Dodgers and no one else really can swing for the fences. Casey Blake has made minor contributions as have Russell Martin and James Loney. But Manny has put this team on his back since he has been in town.

The Cubs have a young line up. Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, and Aramis Ramirez are the veterans on the club that will lead the team to victory. They have a few young guys who will need to step up.

The Cubs really out match the Dodgers in the pitching battle. Their rotation is just too deep. Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden, and Ted Lilly headline the rotation. While the bullpen has been strong with Kerry Wood reviving his career as a closer, Bob Howry is looking strong and Carlos Marmol has returned to form.

For the Dodgers, they have Chad Billingsley and Derek Lowe as their big starters and Jonathan Broxton is probably their best bullpen option.

Prediction: Cubs over Dodgers in 4 games.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The Brewers limp into this series without Ben Sheets, but the Phillies may be without Pat Burrell. That being said, the Brewers have the Sabathia and Prince Fielder. That seems like all they will need. The Phillies have some guys who will make a difference as well. Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, and Jimmy Rollins have carried this team for the past year or so. Even with his struggles Howard has made major contributions to the Phillies. Chase Utley, Joe Blanton, and Brad Lidge will all make major contributions to this team in this series.

The Brewers don't have a lack of talent either. J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun are possibly the biggest names on offense. Even without Ben Sheets, the Brewers have a decent rotation. Yovani Gallardo is back from a knee injury, Jeff Suppan can pitch well, and the bullpen has a few good arms. The one that may hurt them is Eric Gagne.

Lots of close games here.

Prediction: Phillies grind out a sweep.

Chicago White Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays are the upstart "where the hell did they come from?" team, while the White Sox barely made the playoffs. The Rays have been sitting around getting ready for the games setting the rotation up and getting everyone healthy. They will have Carl Crawford back in the lineup and that is a huge boost for them.

The White Sox have been pushing their pitchers out on 3 days rest for the last week or so, that is going to back fire on them now.

Prediction: The Rays over the White Sox in 5 games.

==Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim The Angels owned the Sox this season, going 8-1 against them. However, the Red Sox beat the Angels in the playoffs in 2004 and 2007 and both years went on to win the World Series.

The Angels have John Lackey struggling while the Red Sox have Josh Beckett injured.

The BoSox also have to worry about injuries to J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell and they no longer have a guy named Manny... maybe you've heard of him. He was the 2004 World Series MVP and now he is crushing the ball while wearing Dodger blue. The Sox have the pitching and can have the bats if everyone stays healthy. And the Angels have the bats and have potential to have the pitching.

Prediction: Red Sox over the Angels in 5. (Extra innings1?! Can you say Big Papi?)

Don't take this personally, but your Phillies-Brewers preview lacks substance and research. You're clearly a sox fan (and that's fine) and this is a case of sticking with what you know and skipping why you don't.

At least make an attempt to spell Cole Hamels name right or know the this is his third year in the league, Howard's 3rd full year as well...maybe i'm arguing semantics, but they've hardly been carrying the phillies for years...

Add that all up and all I've seen is you saying "It appears the phillies have more good players I've heard of than the Brewers do...so the Phillies will win"

I don't mean to be so rude, but frankly that preview was poor, IMO

That is some poor proof reading on my part, sorry about that. Thanks for the critics. I pay a decent amount of attention to the phillies, i know it doesn't look like it but I do. Next time I will show that better.

I'm hoping stretch run acquisition joe blanton doesn't have to march his fat ass to the mound

Thanks for the response

RE: Angels & Sox

What I love most about this series is that in a vacuum you and I would both think, Oh man, the Angels are so good and the Red Sox are falling apart (see Lowell, Drew and a departed Manny)...but the fact of the matter is, the Angels have been totally lucky this year and quite frankly, Lackey is the opposite of a big game pitcher...he melts in the post-season

I agree on the Lackey thing, after he led the Angels to that world series in 2002 he has been a regular season pitcher. Joe Blanton normally pitches well in big games though, not that he has been in a ton, but I would rather give him the ball over Lackey in a game 5 or 7.

I completely agree..

"The Angels are the best team in the league"

"The Angels owned the Sox this season...."

"Josh Beckett injured."

"...worry about injuries to JD Drew and Mike Lowell and no longer have a guy named Manny..."

No mention of Mark Teixeira's impact on the Angels

Then you pick the Sox?

The Angeles just don't have the pitching and the sox have a few guys that have been putting the team on their backs all season. Lester, Dice-K, Ortiz, Youk, Pedrioa, and drew and lowell are both slated to play. And the Sox have a secret weapon..... Julio Lugo! What a joke,i dont think he even made the roster. But give up defense to get nothing.

Even as a Red Sox fan, I have to say that the Angels have better pitching than the Red Sox do... as of now. With Beckett injured, it's most likely he'll pitch only one game, with that being game 3 or 4 (depending on what the situation for the Sawx is).

Are you telling me that Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, John Lackey, and Jon Garland (who did great in the playoffs in 2005) are worse than the starting rotation in Boston? Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka (control problems, but pretty darn good on the road... I'll give him credit for that), an injured Beckett, and Tim Wakefield?

I would say that they're at least equally matched... but Los Angeles/Anaheim is in much better condition than the Red Sox are right now in terms of injuries. As you stated, Beckett, Lowell, and Drew are all suffering some sort of injuries right now.

LA looks to be in top form, and it looks like nothing can stop them. However, looking back at the past two times the Red Sox faced the Angels, the Sawx swept the Angels in both division series. But I seriously think that Mike Scioscia has come up with a good strategy to at least pick up 1 win at home...

I say Angels in 5...

Rays in 4.

Phillies in 5.

Dodgers sweep the Cubs. Yes, I said it. Where is the "Torre vs. Piniella" vibe, people?

and... Angels in 4 although it won't be that close and I would rather have the Rays beat the Red Sox in the ALCS because it would allow me more smack talking opportunities.

Then everyone can get all flustered about a possible L.A. series while the Rays and Phillies make that notion moot.

(I better start making phone calls to my homeys in PA)

Red against Blue in the World Series, it's only fitting...

I would be shocked if the Phils win in five too, especially considering C.C. would be pitching Game Five on full rest. Phils in four or Brewers in five.

Why's it assumed CC is so unhittable? The guy was taking a bath (pun intended) in the AL against power hitting teams in the AL like the white sox (0-1, 4.87 ERA), why's it seem like he could somehow dominant two starts against a team that loves hitting home runs (and stealing bases)...not to mention the guy's been pitching on 3 days rest for the last 2 weeks (and is again tomorrow)...

The regular season emphasizes a team's strengths, which is why some teams win 95 games and other teams lose 95 games.

The postseason emphasizes a team's weaknesses, which is why there are a higher number of perceived upsets, when in reality they are not. It's all about matchups.

Phillies over Brewers in 4.

Cubs over Dodgers in 3.

Rays over Sox in 5.

Angels over Sox in 4.
