So T.O. has attempted suicide.

Right.

Poor, miserable, narcissistic Terrell Owens has just tried to kill the one person he loves most.

Himself.

Don't believe it. Not for one minute. This isn't a suicide attempt, it isn't a case of chronic, hidden depression, and it isn't a case of some poor millionaire athlete dealing with hidden demons because his parents didn't love him enough or he got picked on too much in school. It might be a cry for help, but not for any reason other than the fact that Owens can't seem to get enough attention.

Let's examine the facts (and we'll take these from the police report, posted over at The Smoking Gun):

  • Owens publicist, Kim Etheredge, made the 911 call. His PUBLICIST. Not his girlfriend, not his housekeeper, not some crony in his entourage, a trained, professional spin-doctor.
  • Etheredge reports that Owens took two pills in her presence, and she tried to remove them from his mouth. Yeah. I'm guessing Miss Etheredge isn't going to have any plausible chance at taking anything from the mouth of a 6'3” 224 pound professional athlete. But it makes for a dramatic scene. I can almost see the made-for-TV re-enactment now.
  • Owens tried to kill himself with pills.

Think about this – especially the part about the preferred “suicide” weapon.

If someone really wants to kill himself, he'll do it with a gun, or a tall building, or a bus. When you take a bunch of pills, in front of your publicist, you're crying for attention. You're not trying to kill yourself.

Maybe Owens is upset that he won't be able to play against Philadelphia and stick it to his old team. Maybe he realizes that his act is getting tired, and it's time to try something new. Maybe he wants people to be sympathetic towards him now, so he figures “conquering depression” and returning to the field might earn him some applause.

I don't know what his motivation is. But I do know this much – Terrell Owens is not depressed, and he did not sincerely try to kill himself.

Good thing you're not adding to his attention by writing the 27th article about this on this site alone.

Good point. I hadn't even considered that angle. I suppose it would have been better to ignore him.

Regardless of his motives (which you are in absolutely no position to judge), this article is callous and in bad taste. Put aside your hatred of TO for a second (believe me, I've established myself as a strong TO hater) and put on some sympathy for just a minute. The man was hospitalized last night for attempting suicide. Can't you have compassion for just one stinking day?

Why should I be sympathetic when I don't believe he actually made an attempt to commit suicide? I think compassion and sympathy is exactly what he craves - he's tired of being a demon in the public eye. I could be entirely wrong. He could have a real problem with depression, and maybe he was just too scared to properly kill himself. If that's the case, then he needs to get help, and I need to do better than to post knee-jerk commentary on the Internet.

That's exactly my point. EVEN if his motive was public attention, can't we take a look and try to figure out what would drive a person to OD just to get some press? When you have no idea what his motives are, such a knee-jerk article with such callous speculation is, to me, incredibly offensive.

When a public figure like Owens earns a reputation for publicly throwing his teammates under the bus, I really don't think it's out of line to treat him skeptically in the media.

As it turns out, Owens is denying the entire affair. So, he's not depressed, he didn't OD, but... wouldn't you know? He's got all kinds of attention on him today. Go figure.

And did you know that when you wrote this article? Did you know about the denial about depression before you said that he only did this as a publicity stunt? And it's not out of line to treat him skeptically...when it's NOT something life-threatening. When there are reports that someone has attempted stuicide, I'd expect at least 24 hours of, if not compassion, then certainly a level of understanding. You only showed coldness that I cannot understand.

Some guy called KHTK 1140 here in Sacramento this morning with almost the exact same take.

I wish he'd at least given a shout-out to AGM. ;)
