Lack of Black Players in Baseball

I noticed last week and yesterday when I went to the Minor League baseball games in Knoxville, Tennessee that there were very few black players in the dugouts. For the first time, it really hit me that baseball is not drawing black players to the game like it has in the past. A report was released recently that said that only 8.2 percent of Major League players were black. Then if you break it down even further, there would be even less blacks who are American citizens because of the blacks who come from other countries.

It is sad to think that it took 12 years for the Boston Red Sox to become the last team to sign a black player to a Major League contract; the player was Pumpsie Green. If not for prejudice by the Red Sox, they could have signed Willie Mays. Can you imagine Willie Mays and Ted Williams on the same team? The Red Sox probably would not have had to wait 86 years between World Series championships if they had signed Mays.

They also gave Jackie Robinson a tryout, but he knew they were not serious about actually signing him. There are reports that someone yelled to get them blankety blanks off the field while Robinson was on the field.

Red Sox manager Pinky Higgins was quoted as saying he would never manage a team with a black player. Because of his attitude Pumpsie Green had to wait to be called up to the majors until Higgins was gone.

The following article was posted at the USA Today website a few hours ago and explains in detail what the findings were of the report mentioned above.

First off, nice article, Niteowl. This is a topic that should definitely be talked about.

Secondly, I can't believe it took that long for the Red Sox to sign a black player. JEEZ!

Thirdly, Pinky Higgins can go to Hell!

Great article NO, I was just watching the Real Sports where they address this issue and I heard a few amazing stats. First, the Astros and Braves had no blacks in their opening day lineup. Second the number has dropped from 27% to 8%. It's amazing how this has happened.

I'm definitely shocked as well. Do you guys think that African Americans believe that baseball was meant to be for white, rich people? I've got so many comments about that nowadays, and I've tried to pleead my case: they just won't listen to me. It sucks being the only person in school to LOVE baseball, while several people are into soccer and basketball here...

No, I dont think it's that people think its for rich whites, there just arent as many opportunities to play baseball anymore. The fields in the innercities dont exist anymore. In addition name a baseball spokesman thats cool, black or white. Baseball is poorly marketed across the board.

dead on BigP...other issues develope in hockey as well...how many frozen ponds are near cities in general in the US...

Plus to play both Hockey and Baseball you really need some relatively expensive equipment...in baseball a ball (3 bucks) a glove (40 bucks) and a bat (a solid 80 dollars) and that's for some sandlot stuff...to play basketball at the park, you just need a ball...

In the end, i think the one thing that almost every candidate never really fixes is this type of issue...not just sports, because they're not important to that scale, but rather than blowing money on a war or even numerous pork barreling efforts as well as things like single payer healthcare (which is its own terrible idea) we should be trying to elevate the future...give teachers 50K plus starting salaries and bring in more coaches and opportunities

Then we not only will solve the other issues later, but will have the means to as we will all reap the benefits of bringing everyone to their highest level...

Not at all. It's just demographics, a trend. Things like this are cyclical. Like BigP said, a few years ago the number was 27%, meaning Caucasians and Latins were writing and commenting on similar articles to this one.

Im not so sure that it's cyclical, that implies that the numbers will rise again. I don't think that will have. I think the demographic has shifted, and blacks wll never return to baseball in the numbers they once did.

When you factor in that at the minor league level the few black players on the teams I saw play last night only a very few of them will ever make it to the majors.

Here is more info on Pinky Higgins who holds the major league record for 12 straight hits...but the negative far outweighs anything positive about Higgins as in the quote mentioned below.

Red Sox historians often single out Higgins, along with long-time Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, when they discuss the root of the club's reputation for resisting racial integration. The Red Sox were the last of the then-16 major league teams to play an African American. Higgins was quoted by one Boston baseball writer, the late Al Hirshberg, as saying, "There'll be no niggers on this ball club as long as I have anything to say about it."[2] He also reportedly called sportswriter Clif Keane "a fucking nigger lover"[3] upon hearing Keane praise the talents of outfielder Minnie Minoso, a Cuban of African descent.

The Red Sox' first African-American player, utility infielder Pumpsie Green, was recalled from the minor leagues in 1959, during Jurges' brief tenure as pilot.

I think it is wrong to exclude players based on race, no question. But the same thing is happening with white Americans in the NBA. Blacks should call this both ways.

How are white Americans being excluded from playing in the NBA?

They're not...actually (and this is factual) they're almost more ideal NBA players from a marketing aspect...

Why was Larry Bird so popular...he was good, white and many many midwesterns (and northeasters) identified with him

This same effect explains why Hansbrough is highly touted when most will agree he's probably not going to fit in the NBA

But moreover, neither is really being excluded intentionally, its just the result of current trends...White kids are on big diamonds in the middle of nebraska playing while black kids pick up their basketballs and go down the street...

the more you practice, the better you get...etc etc...

Ever wonder how many great white NBA players and awesome black MLB players are just never discovered because they think to play....

Oh no, I completly agree JT, just trying to figure out the logic in the previous statement. The biggest knock on the NBA recently has been that its too "hip hop" or too "urban" Basically too black. Why do you think there is always such a huge outcry as soon as a player (Adam Morrison, Tyler Hansborugh) comes around who may be able to be the next Bird.

I suppose so...

If you think about it though, the NBA just reaches a niche market with only roughly 12% of the us population being listed as black on the census, they are just too "Urban" or "Hip Hop" because the majority...isn't

For some interesting facts, check out this portion of Spurs fans demographics who are rich, well educated, 30-40 and white (though the spurs list a large hispanic fanbase, though i assume this is specific to the spurs only)

The Spurs are in an interesting market, and an interestingly built team. There 3 stars aren't even from the US. So that in itself makes for interesting conversation. Throw in the fact that they are in a small market.

That just goes to perception, P. It's what we see when we turn on the TV. You see a bunch of brothers with tank tops and gangsta shorts playing hoops, with their tattoos all over and do-rags on their head, then jump in the car and drive to the supermarket and pass a school playground and see the same thing. Is if fair? Of course not, but the only responsible party to changing the NBA's image is the NBA, and I personally believe they are projecting exactly what they want us to see. And this is factual as well. The amount of arrests involving African American NFL players is significantly higher than those in the NBA. But because the NFL is at the top of the popularity chart, no one seems to care. And that definitely isn't fair.

Oh yeah, it's all about perception. The NFL has a great PR machine, they also haven't brought in the same outsiders. The NBA has encuraged Hip Hop and the partnerships and they wanted some younger fans. Where as the NFL knows what their fanbase is, and they now market the sport to families.

JuTM made a very valid point about the expense of playing baseball. My grandson's coach last year said he had spent $150 for a baseball bat for his son. During the season he said my grandson's bat was cracked and he had to buy another one and my son in law told him they couldn't afford a new bat...So I can verify what JuTM wrote about the huge expense of playing youth baseball. Here in Knoxville they charge $80 just to register at first of the season. So I can see why a poor family could not pay that kind of money when they can barely put food on the table.
