LA Insider: Agent Zero Returns, Leinart Woes, Pitching

Agent Zero Could Return to his hometown.
Agent Zero Could Return to his hometown.

Agent Zero Homecoming

According to the Los Angeles Times, there is a strong possibility that All-Star point guard and upcoming free agent Gilbert Arenas could return to his hometown of Los Angeles to play for the Lakers or even more likely the Clippers. I find it hard to believe that the Lakers would actually try to obtain Arenas due to the fact that they already have four All-Star caliber players (Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum) in the starting lineup and have limited money to sign a player who would command Arenas’s salary. However, I think Agent Zero representing Clipper Nation is an intriguing scenario because he would make them a serious contender for the Pacific Division crown.

While it’s hard to imagine any 23-53 team actually competing for a divisional title in the Western Conference, the Clippers could certainly do so with the addition of Arenas and the return of a healthy Elton Brand, Chris Kaman, and Shaun Livingston. The Clips have been decimated by injuries this season with, Brand, a typical 20-10 guy and an All-Star, missing over seventy of the team’s games. The promising young point guard Livingston, who was the third pick in the 2005 draft, has missed the entire season due to a knee injury. A starting five of Cuttino Mobley, Al Thornton, Brand, Kaman, and Arenas, could make the Clippers a dangerous team next year.

Leinart Having Too Much Fun

Matt Leinart will always be remembered at USC for leading the Trojans to a 34 game winning streak, capturing two national titles, and winning the Heisman Trophy, but his image in the Valley of the Sun is beginning to take a beating after several promiscuous pictures surfaced on thedirty.com. In one of the pictures, a young girl is seen guzzling beer from a beer bong held by none other than Leinart. What if that girl is under 21 and wrecks her car on the way home from the party. I am sure that Leinart was not checking IDs at the door and there is no guarantee that all the people attending the party were of drinking age. If any of the girls were found to be drunk by local authorities, it is likely that Leinart could find himself treading in some deep water for serving alcohol to minors. The evidence would be overwhelming. While there is nothing wrong with having a good party, the leader of a pro football team needs to have some maturity and sound judgement on and off the field. These latest photos simply reinforce old stereotypes regarding Leinart’s Hollywood tendencies and raise some questions regarding his leadership ability. With his one-year old son living with his mother in Los Angeles and his football trying to make the playoffs in 2008, it seems that Leinart could be doing some more productive things this offseason.

Dodgers Rookie Impressive

At 33 years old, Hiroki Kuroda isn’t the typical rookie pitcher, but nonetheless, he still looked impressive in his debut against the San Diego Padres, on Friday night. Kuroda, who claimed to be nervous before the game, out-pitched the legendary Greg Maddux by holding the Padres to just three hits over seven innings. The rookie from Japan used a fastball-slider combination with an occasional splitter strike out four batters and allowing just one run. Last year the Dodgers really had just two reliable pitchers in the rotation with Brad Penny and Derek Lowe. Now with the addition of Kuroda and the continual improvement of Chad Billingsley, the Dodgers may actually have a formidable pitching staff this season.

Odom Stepping Up

With a must needed win against the Dallas Mavericks, Lamar Odom proved to Laker fans that he is surely capable of stepping up when the game is on the line. Odom score 31 points, three shy of his career high, on a remarkable 12 of 14 shooting. Phil Jackson was complementary of his Odom, stating, “[He] had a remarkable game. It was a tough cover for Nowitzki, coming back from that ankle injury, and Lamar exploited it.” With the arrival of Pau Gasol, many people have forgotten about Lamar Odom, who was expected to be the next Scottie Pippen when he first arrived in Los Angeles back in 2004. While those expectations may have been a little unrealistic, Lamar has certainly been capable of exploiting mismatches since the Pau trade. If the Lakers are to seriously contend for the NBA title, they will need more of these Pippenesque performances from Odom.

Are you serious about Leinart?

Its so easy to have this type of attitude when you're 15...but you need to realize the world isn't all rules and right and wrong...

How many college students do you think drink underage? for every one you find that doesn't, I bet i can find 5 who do...and its stupid to go off on Leinart for just having fun and a whole bunch of "what ifs"

I agree with Justin. Even 5 years ago we would of heard nothing of this party, like the hundreds of parties thrown by NFL players every season. Usually much worse (cocaine, oxycotin etc) is abused at these lavish raves without a camera noticing. The amount of exposure we have of athletes and actors has really changed our perspective of them as people.

I agree with both of you in some respects - but Leinart is just damned stupid for ONE simple reasons...

He allowed pictures to be taken. For THAT he should be embarassed FULLY. "Hollywood Matt" needs to realize that he is a cornerstone of a NFL franchise, not a frat boy anymore...

AT least they weren't ugly girls like the ones Ben Rothleisberger seems to always be seen with...

Matt has always been a celeb-boy even when he wasn't starting at USC. He's one of those people that loves being photographed so I'm sure he's not even upset about this. He may be annoyed he got caught being himself, but again - he's the attention whore so it serves him right.

JuT, Matt is suppose to be the leader of an NFL franchise. When frat boys are having a big-time party and drinking is going on it's a little different. The Cardinals are paying this guy millions of dollars to represent their franchise and acting like a college frat kid puts the Cards at risks. Would you your employees running around at night getting drunk and F*** chicks up. I sure wouldn't. He isn't in college anymore guys.

BTW, when do Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Carson Palmer, go out and act like college age kids in public. We all saw Ryan Leaf, Mike Vick, and Todd Marinovich, all have fun and disregard the rules. These guys showed bad judgement off the field, which led to bad judgement on the field. Their disregard for the rules, which JuT tosses to the side, and lack of maturity cost them their careers.

And I have no problem with what Leinart is doing. I agree with Manny as well...he would be in even better shape if those pictures weren't taken and subsequently leaked. There is one quote I'm interested in in your article:

The evidence would be overwhelming. While there is nothing wrong with having a good party, the leader of a pro football team needs to have some maturity and sound judgement on and off the field.

Silly....the Cardinals aren't a professional football team.

What about Jordan's known love of the girls on the road? There's stories of him having three girls in his hotel room here in Phoenix the night before the Finals.

There's also stories of his "flu" game against the Jazz as nothing more than being all facked out...

Babe Ruth is commonly known for banging 7 chicks a night (smoking a cigar after every time and leaving 7 stubs in the ashtrtay) and being the "noisiest facker in America" according to his roommates...

Seriously, what they do off the court is their business, but it would be nice if Leinart was smart enough to make sure their of age if he's gonna whip out the beer bong...

I'll certainly take a Leinart staying home and partying safe than a Jim Leyritz or Leonard Little - even Billy Martin drunk driving or a Stephen Jackson or Pacman at the club or "Taser me Three Times" Michael Olowakandi... jeez.

I watched the 2nd half of the Lakers game, and I really think the Lakers won the game at the beginning of the 4th, when Jordan Farmar and Ronny Turiaf came in.

They did a very good job defending, they cut it to 2 points when Kobe and Gasol came back in, and that's when Odom, Bryant, and Gasol took over.

I was afraid though Nowitzki's ankle would rip after the fake Odom put on him. ;-)

Finally, am I the only one who believes this Gasol trade is the best trade of the season? Because he seems to fit perfectly into the Lakers system, especially with Odom and Bryant.

For the Mavericks, I still believe they will not make it to the playoffs. They will not beat the Suns, and that loss last night showed that even if they did make the playoffs they would probably get swept. A 1-10 record against teams over .500, and 0 wins against teams currently in the playoffs should the season end today.

This is the 2nd time now Dallas has had a chance to prove themselves worthy at the Staples Center, and twice they had leads of 7 or more in the 4th quarter, only to go to waste because they have a less than average defense in the paint. Erick Dampier is a rebounding machine and he blocks shots, but he can't contend with Gasol or Duncan or any of those guys for that matter.

I haven't even mentioned the Jason Kidd deal. He still has the quickness, but they essentially took away a scorer in Devin Harris, for an assist man, and assists are almost always dependent on the other guy finishing.

If they don't make the playoffs, I see no purpose in keeping Avery Johnson, too many underachieving seasons. Three years, an NBA Finals choke to remember, a first round 1 vs. 8 choke to remember, and now they may not even make the playoffs in year 3.
