King James, meet a real dynasty

Finals Sweep.

Four championships in nine years.

Three in the last five.

And yet some would have you believe this team is not a dynasty?

I'm not sure what these people want. Consecutive titles, maybe? Yeah, that would be nice, but there is something to be said for consistently getting it done over a larger span of time. Besides, it's not like they stunk the years they didn't win--these past nine years also yielded six division titles.

Maybe they want scoreboard domination. Yeah, the Spurs win a lot of close games. Keyword in that sentence? Win.

I think what people are really looking for is flash. The Suns are NBA darlings because they play exciting, up tempo basketball. Unfortunately, this has produced no titles. Before them, the Mavs were flash. No titles. Go back further to Sactown. No titles.

What is this team's weakness? Do they have one? They play lockdown defense. They are aggressive on offense. They have too many weapons to focus on one player. Duncan is perhaps the best player of the past ten years, Parker has turned into a top five point guard, and the rest of the roster plays their roles to perfection. In addition, they draft smart, despite consistently picking at the end of the first round.

Avery Johnson has attempted to imitate San Antonio's defense in Dallas and done so fairly successfully. But after watching the playoffs, I'm convinced he's copied the wrong aspect of the Spurs game. He should be installing their offense. Every player on this team drives to the basket. They attack. They are relentless, they are strong, and when they get bumped, they don't resort to jump shots. What a concept.

Say what you want. Say they aren't a dynasty.

They'll just keep sizing rings.

4 consecutive championships = so called "dynasty". But don't get me wrong, the Spurs have had an admirable run for the past decade.

I'm not ripping Lebron, but one man does not make a dynasty. It's just a play on the royalty theme, not a rip on the player.

Whether or not the spurs are a dynasty, I don't really care anymore because the title "dynasty" gets thrown around a lot... anytime you win more than 2 titles, its a dynasty...who cares...

Most will agree, a dynasty title count is dependent on the sport

Football: Personally, I only see 4 as a dynasty, but there are a few legitimate 3s (like dallas in the 90s...if barry switzer can win a title with your team, you must be good). i don't really consider the pats a dynasty because of that 2003 season, but many do and I would be fine with the title if brady wins another SB in new england...

Baseball: The measuring stick is the yankees, espcially those 20s, 30s and 50s yankees who won many many titles. once again, with the modern era now allowing for a little more parity (with about 15 teams with legitimate payrolls), I'm gonna go with 4 titles, like the late 90s yanks.

Basketball: 4, as discussed. But the recent article about only the 50s celts and the 90s bulls does seem like a fair assessment if you're conservative

Hockey: 4 Excuse my lack of knowledge, but teams like the 80s Isles, 50s Canadiens (??) are the stick. Perhaps the hockey window is larger now, but I don't think we'll see a dynasty in hockey for 10-20 years till front office learn how to cope/live with the cap.

So in general, 4 titles in a span of an era or group of players seems fair.

Thoughts anyone?

I generally think three is good for a dynasty, four is a lock. Another factor that I think is important is the roster. If you have the same basic core for three titles, I'd call it a dynasty. If you have a lot of turnover, you have to win more titles to convince me. Although that does speak well for your front office.

I agree that the term dynasty gets thrown around too loosely (I just heard Tom Hicks refer to the John Hart Cleveland Indians as a dynasty), but I don't think calling the Spurs a dynasty is careless. And there is some great unintentional comedy in this Hicks interview about Hart. Unbelievable.
