Keeping one foot on the ground

The Cowboys are 4-0.

Those few words have power: the power to send a city, and beyond, into a euphoric tizzy. The power to make millions of fans giddy with excitement. But also the power to make them a little irrational. OK, a lot.

I'm already hearing those other two words being tossed around a little too lightly: Super Bowl. Playoffs? Fine. I expect this team to make the playoffs. I've also heard people openly wonder if Tony Romo is on par with Manning and Brady. I know getting carried away with kneejerk reactions is fun but it's a little early for the Super Bowl talk. My mission, and I do choose to accept it, is to keep the Cowboys fan grounded, even if it is only by the little piggy that went 'wee, wee, wee all the way home.'

They haven't played anybody. Their opponents have a combined three wins. Three. Can we at least wait until after the New England game?

They haven't played a good defense. 'But what about Chicago?' you say. Quite simply, they aren't that good. They are ranked 15th in yards allowed and 21st in points allowed, and they are the best of the bunch the 'Boys have seen so far. The Cowboys offense has looked good, but how much had that had to do with their opponents?

The offense. Don't get me wrong: they have looked great. But they are using the pass to set up the run and they aren't going to be able to do that every week, and certainly not in the playoffs. When the pass is taken away from them, with they be able to consistently run the ball? Maybe, but it is not a given.

Special teams. The special teams unit is losing the field position battles, particularly on punt coverage. So far, the offense and defense has been able to handle it, but again, against a good team, they are putting themselves in a hole.

Injuries. They are starting to get some players back who were injured in the pre-season, but how much longer are they going to be able to plug guys in? The Cowboys were one of the healthiest teams in the league last year, but I fear that streak is due to end.

The schedule is favorable, and the team should finish with a great record. I predicted 13-3 when the schedule was announced last spring and I still expect that to happen. But let's hold off on the Super Bowl talk for a few more weeks. In fact, here is a rallying cry for Cowboys' fans: 'Remember the Mavericks!'

beware the letdown game. A team the Cowboys think has no chance of beating them, after all the Bills have the league's worst ranked defense. but could they possibly look past the Bills thinking too much about the premium matchup next game with the Patriots?

I don't think the Bills can beat Dallas, but I'd beware of the game if wagering against the spread. I think Dallas is favored by 10 points or something, which seems high. The Bills could make this a closer game than Vegas thinks.

It's a 10.5 spread and to be honest that would be tough to turn away from. They gave SD a 16 pt spread over KC last week. And the Cowboys offense has proved itself this year unlike LT and company.

Are the Cowboys the best team in the NFL? Probably not, are they the best team in the NFC? Probably are, and thats good enough to push them deep into the playoffs. Romo has shown maturation in his passing ability. He is making better choices with the football. Patrick Creighton has emerged as a legit #2 receiver, add him into the mix and you get Terry Glenn back, their best wideout from a year ago, and TO who is having his best year since his first season in Philly and Whitten a talented down the field TE who Romo loves to find when in trouble. Thats a hell of a receiving core.

I do like it--it's very exciting. But that is what I was getting at when I say I am worried about their offense. Will they be able to run the ball when the pass has been shut down? And does Garrett have the experience to know when that has happened? So far, I don't know. I think we will find out in two weeks.

Four weeks ago, the story on the Bears was, Rex was a question mark, but that defense was good enough to keep them in contention for any game. As it turns out we all over valued their defense. The Cowboys were the first team to expose that, and to be fair, a big part of the Bears collapse last week was due to Griese throwing 2 or 3 picks in the fourth. Its hard to play D for 15 mins straight.

Right, and yet the Seahawks have beat the teams that no one thought they could beat pre-season, but now everyone says "the other teams are terrible". If a team beats a team they aren't supposed do, due to pre season "talking heads" then shouldn't it be a plus for the team? Or should it be because of the teams they are playing? Just keep it consistent.

I think the Cowbys have a good team, but they haven't played a team that is good yet. Let me see them beat a team with a winnign recortd, then I will say they are "who we thought they were"

If you want to crown them, them crown their asses!
