Jonathon Sanchez for Delmon Young?

About a week ago there was a blurb mentioned from the Winter meetings about the Minnesota Twins offering the San Francisco Giants Delmon Young for Jonathon Sanchez. While that trade straight up wouldn't be the best deal for the Giants as their need is for infielders and not outfielders. However, this proposal did get me thinking. I wonder if the Twins would consider expanding the deal and adding a few more players into the mix. My offer to the Twins would be Jonathon Sanchez, Nate Schierholtz and Randy Winn for Delmon Young, Michael Cuddyer (atlthough I still consider it if Cuddyer weren't involved) and Nick Blackburn. Here's why it would make sense for both teams:

The Giants: They'd be getting a young right-handed bat who massively underachieved in Minnesota last season and has huge potential. In the long run, Young will be better than [1] Schierholtz and is a way better fit in this ballpark. Young reminds me of a younger Alex Rios and I think it's only a matter of time before we see that 20-20 or even 30-20 potential (probably the '09 season). He's only 23 and Delmon has already put together 2 respectable seasons. I think this 3rd year is the one where he will really take off and start realizing his potential. Also, Nick Blackburn could come in and take Sanchez's spot in the rotation. He doesn't have the upside that Sanchez has, but he's a solid young pitcher in his own right. His rookie season was a very good one (11-11 with a 4.05 era in 193 innings pitched). I'd rather have Slowey, Baker or of course Liriano back, but any of those 3 are probably off limits, at least in a proposed trade like this. Also asking for Cuddyer in addition may be stretching it a bit, but he would provide them a decent option at first or third. I'd still consider the deal though even if Cuddyer weren't involved though as Young's potential is that good.

The Twins: They have privately been shopping Young after he didn't perform up to their expectations and supposedly had some attitude issues. They could have [2] interest in Winn as a right fielder for them as his contract expires after the '09 season and would probably put up better numbers than Young did for them last season. Schierholtz could play left field for them or take over in right when/if Winn left in free agency. And of course, they'd get their man in Sanchez, a guy with Francisco Liriano stuff and a guy they've had their eye on for a while now. They could figure that this deal could help fans forget about giving up Matt Garza, who's skills were put on display for the whole world to see in the fall. It just seems like a deal that could make a lot of sense for both teams. If the Twins really offered Young for Sanchez straight up, then you'd have to believe they'd have interest in doing this deal as well. They'd just be adding on a guy who would end up being their 5th starter and Cuddyer, who hasn't been as productive over the last couple of seasons.

All in all, the Twinkies rotation would look pretty darn good, and piled with young arms with a lot of stuff. Baker-Liriano-Slowey-Sanchez-Perkins with Boof Bonser as a possible swing man or reliever is a nice set-up. Also getting two quality outfielders in the veteran Winn and the youngster Schierholtz would help offset the loss of Cuddyer and Young. While the Giants get two much needed power/run producing bats into the lineup and although Blackburn isn't as nasty as Sanchez, they'd be getting themselves a more than capable starting pitcher.

If the Twins are smoking something that makes them consider trading DY, Cuddyer AND Blackburn in the same deal, you realy DON'T want it!

No problem, but we are pricey. LOL. Seriously, if the Twins were offering Young for Sanchez, they'd have to consider a prop. like that. Just a thought, not anything I'd expect to happen but would make a lot of damn sense for both teams.

As a guy who is a ridiculously out-of-proportion fan of both DY AND Schierholtz.... are you serious? No.... seriously... really?

Guys, it's not going to happen, again, just a bored day during the offseason and one internet rumor started and I thought I would expand on it cause there was nothing better to write about. And no, I said Cuddyer would be a strecth, but your telling me that if the Twins would have done Young for Sanchez, they wouldn't consider Young and Blackburn for Sanchez, Schierholtz and Winn. Winn is about as good as Young right now, although Young has way more upside, and Schierholtz isn't bad in his own right. Just sayin, not that it's even a remote possibility, but it just could make some sense.

""As a guy who is a ridiculously out-of-proportion fan of both DY AND Schierholtz.... are you serious? No.... seriously... really?"" Manny, were you implying that I said Schierholtz had the same upside? Well I wasn't and I know that's not the case. Still with the Twins in that yard I could see Nate being serviceable in rf, maybe .290, 12-18 home runs and 70 RBI. Again, not great but better than what they got out of Young last season. But yes, this is a trade that favors the Giants, no doubt, and I blog for them so of course I'm not going to propose a deal in which we get the short end of the stick.

No, I was saying I like Nate (a whole hell of a lot) but the Twins would need to fall on their collective heads (several times - from a VERY high elevation) to deal Young (and/or Blackburn) for him...

And Randy Winn is fodder at this point at best. Nice guy, veteran... gets the game... but there's a reason he's a Giant and not on a real team. He's garbage.

No offense. I want to enjoy, maybe even root for the Giants but they are a mess...

For the record - I think Nate could hit more HR per season than DY but he'll NEVER have the gun of an arm or amass the same RBI. As for "upside" - isn't DY "younger" than Schierholtz?

I never said they'd trade Schierholtz for him. Read the article. Supposedly the Twins kicked around the idea of Delmon Young for Jon Sanchez. The Giants have no need for outfielders now and really like Sanchez so they didn't really have much interest. I'm saying that if the Twins added one of their young pitchers who don't quite have the upside of Sanchez, that could help fill out the Giants rotation and be respectable, then the Giants would look into it. And to even things out they'd add on Schierholtz and Winn, which would also open a spot for Young to play. And don't count Winn as just a throw in by any means, he was arguably the Giants best all-around and most consistent player last season. Not to mention he plays the hell out of rf which isn't an easy position at Pac Bell Park. Right now, value for value heading in 2009, Winn and Young would be pretty damn even if you ask me. So yes, the Giants would be getting a potential all-star in Young, but they'd be giving up a 26 year-old lefty who led the NL in k's in the first half last season (his first as a full-time starter), a solid 24-year old right fielder who's hit .300 everywhere he's been, and a good, versatile outfielder, who doesn't have a big contract and playing in that dome could put up really good numbers. Just sayin. Again, would kinda make some sense for both squads.

Winn's line from 2008: .306, 10 HR, 64 RBI, 84 runs, 25 sb's while hitting in arguably the toughest park to hit in for a lefty and hitting a lineup as putrid as the Giants'. And again, gold glove caliber defense in a right field that has made some big leaguers look foolish at times.
