Jacobs Field to be Re-named

I’m kind of late on this news, but I’m yet to see an article on it so I’ll right about it.  On Thursday the Cleveland Indians announced that Jacobs Field, named for former owner Dick Jacobs was bought and will be re-named.  Progressive Auto Insurance purchased the naming rights to field.  They will pay 3.6 million every year for 16 years to call the Jake Progressive Field.  They also have announced that they will raise ticket prices.  Now I personally believe the Indians are doing all this so they’ll have the 30 million or so it will take to replace Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia (wow it still feels good saying that.)  But still, you hate to see a great part of Cleveland sports die out.  The Jake is a part of Cleveland, we have played a World Series there, what can we call it now the Progg?  Well to me its still the Jake, no matter what the sign says.  What if they re-named Fenway or Wrigley? Well to us Tribe fans it’s the same thing.  But the sad part is commercialism is taking over the game, and were just going to have to get used to it.

When I heard they renamed the Jake I thought to myself, "They better spend some cash if they are gonna rename the Jake, otherwise whats the point"?

In a way, this is a sad day for baseball. The meaning of The Jake to baseball is enormous. I just wonder what all the Indians fans feel about this, because if Fenway Park was re-named I would go bulistic. But like LASportsBlog said, they better spend some money now.

Indeed, it's very disappointing to see the Jake being re-named. Well, I still call Quicken Loans Arena the Gund once in a while, but it'll be a lot harder to adjust to this rename.

I'm surprised, but then not surprised by this development. Not calling the Tribe's beautiful ballpark Jacobs Field (or The Jake) anymore will take some getting used to. If I were a diehard Indians fan, I'd be upset. Progressive Field? It's not great, but I've seen a lot worse for new names to stadiums or arenas.

A $57.6 million dollar contract. Wow! I guess if you put up the dough it comes with privileges. Too frequently the wishes of the fans are superseded. I'm not a fan but I've been there and it will always be the Jake to me. I feel for the fans.

People forget that Jacobs named the park after himself when he couldn't find a corporation to pony up the $$$ for naming the field, and then, when he sold the team, bought the rights to keep the field named after himself through 2007 as a condition of the sale.

It's not like the writing wasn't on the wall for this. Jacobs Field was just as bought and paid for as Progressive Field is.

No matter what it's called, it's still one of the best places in MLB to watch a game, the team is poised to be a contender for the next several years with a great core group of players, so they should put a great product on the field, and the naming rights were bought by a Cleveland company. You can call it the Jake if you want to. Progressive won't care what you call it as long as Tom Hamilton and Rick Manning calls it Progressive Field.

I don't like Progressive Field as the name. It doesn't sound right. I think Progressive Park sounds better.
