Is there a Curse of Dallas?

Tony Romo is another guy who has been subject to the curse of Dallas.
Tony Romo is another guy who has been subject to the curse of Dallas.

I am beginning to believe that the city of Dallas, Texas, is under some sort of curse after the Cowboys became the latest Dallas pro sports team to choke in the playoffs. While it's certainly not uncommon for a team to undergo a playoff collapse, no city has been more subject to these postseason meltdowns than the Big D. Take a closer look:

Texas Rangers The Rangers might be the only team here not to have choked in the playoffs. Wait a second, the Rangers have been so poorly managed that they have failed to even come close to reaching the postseason. Despite a collection of talented players such as, Alfonso Soriano, Michael Young, Hank Blalock, and Francisco Cordero, the Rangers have failed to be even remotely competitive in the four team AL West. Since 2000, the Rangers have failed to finish higher than third in the division despite having one of MLB's highest payrolls.

Dallas Desperados For those who aren't familiar with sports outside of the Big Three, the Dallas Desperados are an Arena Football League team owned by Jerry Jones that began playing in 2002. Despite just six seasons of play in the AFL, the Desperados have done pretty well going 13-3 in 2006 and 15-1 in 2007. However, the Desperados have made a name for themselves with their annual playoff chokes. In both 2006 and 2007, they have failed to reach the Arena Bowl despite having the league's top record.

Dallas Cowboys No team has been failed to meet expectations more often than the Dallas Cowboys. When Bill Parcells was introduced as Cowboys coach in 2003, many expected America's Team to become an NFL dynasty once again. However, that idea never came to fruition as the Boys suffered through three years of Drew Bledsoe lining up behind center. The results weren't too pretty either as Dallas failed to win one playoff game under Parcells. After Parcells resigned, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hired Wade Phillips, who had been known for his numerous playoff collapses. With the young, hotshot quarterback Tony Romo entering his first full year of starting, the Cowboys got of to a hot start in 2007 going 12-1 with their only loss coming at the hand of the undefeated Patriots. Dallas eventually ended the regular season at 13-3, while also holding homefield advantage. However, their Super Bowl dreams were dashed quickly as they lost at home to the Eli Manning led New York Giants. They lost has made all Cowboys wait one more year before they can hopefully see their team win its first postseason game in over a decade.

Dallas Mavericks After their last two playoff performances, it might be possible to pronounce the Dirk Nowitzki led Mavericks the biggest chokers in NBA history. In the 2006 Finals, the Mavs appeared ready to take home their first NBA title as they held a 2-0 series lead over the Dwyane Wade led Miami Heat. In Game 3, Dallas held a twelve point lead with just over five minutes to play but ended up losing the game in overtime. Much to the dismay of Mark Cuban, the Heat went on to win the next three games, capturing their first NBA title. A year later, the Mavs appeared ready to avenge their disappointing finals performance by winning 67 regular season games, best in franchise history and sixth best in league history. After such a successful regular season, not even the most pessimistic Dallas fan would predict what would happen next. Former Mavericks coach Don Nelson led the 8th seeded Golden State Warriors to a shocking upset over the top seeded Mavs.

After horrendous regular seasons and playoff collapses, it seems pretty clear that city of Dallas is under some sort of curse. While a curse seems all but certain, its exact origin is a true mystery. Without any clear beginning, the curse lacks a proper name and title like Philadelphia's Curse of William Penn. So, if anybody out their has an idea where this curse originated from, I'd be more than happy to hear your thoughts.

The Cowboys won 3 Superbowls in 4 years in the '90s. Wait... that sounds familiar. If you think they're cursed, I'm sure many people are hoping for deja vu all over again. :P

Cursed? Even the Red Sox weren't cursed. They just didn't put together a great pitching staff until 2004, when they magically broke their "curse."

Some people say yes, some say no. I personally don't believe in curses. I just believe in irony and coincidences. Oh, and they Red Sox had a decent starting rotation for quite some time Nap, but they had an AWFUL bullpen. Remember?

I don't know. I didn't become a sports fan until the mid-90s, or a Red Sox fan until the late 90s. All I remember is that the starting rotation had only one ace on it.

Well, you're supposed to have only one ace, Nap. Pedro was our ace in '04... Curt Schilling wasn't an ace, neither was Lowe, or Bronson Arroyo, or Wakefield.

Remember in 2003? The only difference the two teams had were that Jeff Suppan, John Burkett, and Jeff Suppan were on our team (and their ERAs sucked).

Derek Lowe's ERA in '04 was 5.42, but that didn't matter. As we all know, he pitched great in the postseason, collecting all 3 clinching wins in the playoffs. Pedro's ERA went up from 2.22 to 3.90. Wakefield's went up to 4.87. But as long as you have the record to get in the playoffs, you're set. The Red Sox dominated the last 8 games they played, and pitching was the key to helping them win most of those games. That and occasionally a couple of runs to get them going made them win the WS.

But I don't wanna talk about that. This is an article of why Dallas is cursed. I just went WAY off topic.

Seriously, this is a good article, Beast. However, I don't really think Dallas is cursed per se (with an exception of the Mavericks; they're REALLY unlucky). I mean, the Cowboys have had an awful record since 1996: 55-73. They've only been above .500 once since '96 (with the exception to this year). So, I don't really think the Cowboys were cursed since they hardly ever made the playoffs since their last Superbowl win. The Rangers? Well, they just have bad management, like you said. And they spent all that money on A-Rod. See where that got them. They actually had a better record the year he left.

Jon Daniels, since taking over as Rangers GM after the 2005 season, has done a lot to restock the Rangers' farm system. From what I gather, a lot of experts now rank Texas anywhere from #2-#5 overall (behind the Rays). He has made a couple of big blunders, such as the disastrous trade for Adam Eaton and the 5-year, $80 million deal to Michael Young. All in all, though, the Rangers currently have the best management that they've ever had.

There is no curse in Dallas the teams just have not been built to win it all. The Mavs were a run and gun team for years and that doesnt hold up in the playoffs, they love the 06 Championship to a better Heat team that was on its last legs. The Cowboys have not had a talented tema in the playoffs till this year. Before that they had an aging Troy Aikman take them there and Quincy freakin Carter, hardly a team built for success.

There is no curse, the Dallas teams just don't do what they need to do to win. The Desperadoes are a sick good team, and they have the best QB in AFL history (Clint Dolezel), but they are the AFL's version of the 2004 and 2005 Colts. No defense whatsoever. The Mavs are asking Dirk to do way for than he is capable of, and they don't have a good defense either. The Rangers just simply don't bring in marquee talent. I mean, Kevin Millwood?!?!? Gimme a break. They spent $60 million on a third or fourth starter who they fancy as a no. 1. That's besides the fact that they guy is never healthy. Their pitching is always mediocre, and they need to wake up, smell the coffee, and realize that Hank Blalock is not a slugger. Neither was Teixeira. They need a rock like a Santana or a Beckett if they want to go anywhere. But they never get any of those guys. They almost had Beckett until they refused to give up the extra prospects to outbid the BoSox. The said they won't even get into the Santana chase because they want to keep Jarrod Saltalamacchia. They didn't want to dole out the extra dough to get Daisuke Matsuzaka. Their problem is that they value their prospects and low salary policies way too much. As for the Cowboys... they were overachievers this year anyway. Tony Romo is very good, but what people refuse to understand is that this was the guy's first full season as a starter. He's still growing. He's not there yet. Neither is their defense or receiving corps. They had a nice hot streak this year, but they were really only a 10-6 caliber team. Next year, if they go 13-3, they might be genuine. But this year was a lost cause as soon as they started bungling in the last two weeks of the season.

Teixeira's averaged 34 homers and 111 RBI's during his five seasons, and he's not a slugger? You might want to remove "MLB" from your user name, dude.

I don't know this for sure, it's just a supposition, but I'm guessing pitchers would rather not have half their games be in Arlington, one of the best hitter's parks in the majors.

Also, Rangers management has historically been terrible. Jon Daniels is doing a much better job of building from within. It's very hard to get a Santana (no-trade clause) to come to your team if it sucks.

And as for free agent pitchers, if you're offered comparable money, and you have a choice of going to Texas or, say, the Yankees or Red Sox, you're obviously going with the team that has the smarts and the money to build a winner.

this curse started when former mayor laura miller who never watched one second of Mavericks basketball in her life, decided to publicize a parade route for the Mavs and word got back to Miami and the greatest trophy robbery in sports history took place.
