Instant Replay in Baseball???

This has been a topic up for debate for a long time now. But, after last night's blown call on an A-Rod HR, which was ruled a double, the MLB has brought the subject up again. The MLB is considering trying out instant replay for the Arizona Fall League, which I think is a great idea. Major League Baseball umpires have now had not one, not two, but THREE blown calls this week. All three bad calls were on potential HR's, and were not ruled HR's, though it looked pretty obvious on TV.

Many people who are against using instant replay in Baseball have just one legit argument, which is the fact that it slows down the rhythm of the game. That may be true, but isn't it worth it if it allows umps to make the right call. Well, it is for one of the two teams, anyway. Ok, so maybe there is one more argument against using instant replay. I have heard a few people say that it ruins the tradition of Baseball, and allows technology to take over the game. All I have to say is if it you have the technology there, why not use it to improve the game?! If it works for Football, then why not Baseball???

I think this may be the best idea the MLB has had in years. Why, might you say?? Well, first of all, players, coaches, and fans are always complaining about blown calls. So, instant replay can fix that problem. Being an umpire is a tougher job than people think. No matter which call you make, the opposing team will always think it was a bad call. But with instant replay, it is a whole lot easier to be sure you get the call right, and it may help umpires keep their jobs a little longer. This would really take pressure off of them.

If instant replay works in Football, and Basketball, why not Baseball???
If instant replay works in Football, and Basketball, why not Baseball???

Now, like the NFL, there would have to be rules, and regulations with reviewing plays. I would say that they are allowed to "challenge" a close call (like the NFL calls it) once, maybe twice every 9 innings, and then get one extra challenge if a game goes into extra innings. You can challenge close calls on the basepaths, whether or not a hit ball went over the fence (or is fair or foul), and whether or not a fielder made a catch, or if it bounced into his glove. You CANNOT, I repeat CANNOT challenge balls or strikes. That, if anything, would slow the game.

So, this is what I think. The MLB should sit a fifth umpire up in the booth with a TV which gives him replays from mulitple opposing angles, and give him a 2-minute time limit on "challenges". I really do not feel this would slow the game up all that much. And, I really feel there is no reason not to add instant replay to the game of Baseball.

What do you guys/girls think about this situation? Let the debate begin (...again)!!

I see nothing wrong with instant replays if they are not overused and wonder if a manager would throw a red flag on the field like in football. Robbing a player of a home run because they are not close enough to see where the ball went is reason enough to make the change.

The third base umpire in the Mets game on Sunday actually called the play right, he was overruled by the other umpires. Maybe what baseball needs is better umpires and not instant replay.

the umpires last night in the yankees game did pretty much everything right, and still got the call wrong. its tough/near impossible in certain circumstances to run out to the outfield and make the correct call. therefore no matter the quality of umpire in this situation there will bad calls from time to time... THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING!

Baseball has been umpired for 139 years without instant replay and the game is still the best one out there. So what an umpire blows a call, that's the human element and one of the main reasons why baseball is different, and better, than the other sports. If the umpires did "pretty much everything right," then they would have gotten the call right. So it goes back to the umpires. I didn't see the play, so I can't say for sure if an umpire was out of position and what the reason was, but, hey, so what.

Best thing about baseball is having to overcome the odds (blown calls).

Other sports you get the easy way out with that dumb red flag.

Perhaps I just think for as many as you lose on iffy calls, you win on iffy calls...in the end, it doesn't really matter...

saying something has been done for x amount of years without something is a silly argument. the first however many years instant replay DID NOT EXIST. If it existed when the game started who's to say the founders would not have instituted it.

to say its one of the best games without replay is also silly... just because something is good doesn't mean it can't get better. just because something it great doesn't mean there aren't problems that can be fixed...

even bud selig is willing to give it a shot apparently.

It has long been time for instant replay in baseball. Human error is innocent, pure and natural and I understand it as a different element. But this same human error can cost a team a game, even a World Series. They should do it in a way that dosen't disrupt the flow of the game, however.

But how would it work? Would it be at the umpires discretion? Could a manager challenge a call on the field? Ideally, it'd work for things like fair and foul, home run or double. But with the pace that baseball's played at - short bursts of action - I'm not sure you could make a ton of it reviewable without slowing the game down even more (which is a criticism of the game already),

I support it, in limited, regulated uses and definitely not for balls and strikes calls. This "will ruin the momentum of the game" stuff is absurd. They spend more time arguing and fighting, and talking to each coach, and walking across the field, or kicking dirt, etc. than any NFL instant replay timeouts, so in theory the limited use of instant replay will only speed up these instances.

I don't think instant replay in baseball is a good idea. It takes the human element out of the game. Why don't we just have computers call balls and strikes?

All this talk of the "human element" is the damdest thing to me. Sheer lunacy. The GOAL IS TO GET THE CALL RIGHT. How does doing that make it any less baseball??? The game will continue to be played and umpired by HUMANS!

None of those loons talking all this "human element" nonsense would be saying that if it cost their team a pennant or a championship. How does irreperable ERROR enhance the experience?

And WHEN have you EVER heard anyone say that the best part about a game, wasn't the green grass, or the roof overhang, or the double-knit uniforms, or the peanuts and Cracker Jack, or the tape-measure shots of their favorite sluggers, but it was the humanity of the umpires?!

Hey, '85 Cardinals, '96 Orioles, and '05 Angels, you might have been jobbed...but, hey, you should take solice in the fact that the umpires have established their humanity!
