Injecting Some Sense into the Argument

I don't play a doctor on television; I practice medicine in real life. The mind-numbing, constant barrage of Reality TV (nobody holds the clicker to your head) evidently has rendered us victim to a national stupidity.

I give injections on most days - flu shots, pneumonia vaccine, tuberculin tests, hepatitis immunizations, tetanus, B12. Over the years I'm sure I've given thousands, many to those with serious underlying health problems - cancer, diabetes, heart, lung, or renal disease. How many people have gotten abscesses from one of these injections? I can't remember one (although I'll acknowledge my memory isn't getting any better).

There is absolutely no reason I can think of (absent arms) to give a B12 injection into somebody's buttocks. Studies on cadavers years ago showed that a majority of intramuscular injections wind up in adipose (fat) tissue anyway. And as pop culture (movies) remind us, "pitcher's got a big butt" as in fat.

I spoke with an Orthopedist the other day whom I consider an expert in sports medicine, and a very thoughtful guy. He has performed major joint surgery on professional athletes, and attends the latest informative conferences in the field. He described his peers as believing HGH simply to be 'the fountain of youth'. I didn't ask him whether he uses it in his practice, but it certainly makes you wonder.

Let's make this perfectly clear - the use of performance enhancing drugs isn't about right or wrong, vanity, establishing any moral high ground, or staking out new territory in human frailty, it is all about the money. Whether we're discussing Andy Pettitte, Rodney Harrison, Ben Johnson, Lance Armstrong, or other celebrity-athletes, the conversation revolves around the direct link between superior performance and escalating salaries and endorsements.

Yes, professional athletes pride themselves on 'helping the team' and playing at peak efficiency. But society rewards them and their sport for the performance, not the effort. If were all about effort, the Special Olympics would be America's top sport.

But what about Congressional hearings? That's another story, face time for politicians who aspire to power, the other side of the ego and money coin.

Yes, I'm sure Roger Clemens and many of his peers are 'great guys'. After all, isn't shaking down little kids for 20 dollar autographs the American Dream?

Hey Dr. Ron, you are a smart enough guy to know that all parties involved are a bunch of lying cheating bastards.

As for the abscesses, the infection in Rocket's ass is either from a dirty needle (which his trainer has has plenty of...) or the shit from his mouth infected the surface of his.... well you know.

And we all know how the oral cavity approximated to the buttocks. After all, we are talkin' bout Roger Clemens.

There's no reason to get a B12 shot period. Studies have shown it takes YEARS for your body to deplete it and it's easily metabolized from food. B12 is a myth.

HGH on the other hand - people need to WAKE up and see the incredible potential in it. We should be studying the effects HGH has on these highly trained physical specimen athletes so we can understand how to use it better on regular folks.

If something enhances the quality of your life when used correctly, WHY would we vilify it? Because people will abuse it? Stupid people do what stupid people do. Does that mean I shouldn't be allowed to live healthier, with less pain and feel younger, stronger and better??

People benefit from drinking water but many have died from drinking too much water - should we vilify water?

And I remember around 1999-2000 Peter Gammons told how there was a running joke about Roger Clemens and codeword "B12" and thinking what a crock it was then... I just figured he was doing 'roids or incredibly stupid - turns out it was BOTH!!!

i agree, its unfortunate. Your water anecdote is a bit unfair (many people have died from water, or just some weird freak occurances)...

Of course, I watched a steroid special on Nat'l Geographic and a professor from PSU had the gall to mention this little tidbit about roid rage:

I'm paraphrasing but: You show me State College, PA and Ann Arbor, Michigan and I'll show you more violence in one weekend than 50 years of people on steriods...

sheer numbers would dictate that there would be more issues...good thing his doctorate is in some type of medicine and not math/statistics...

Do you have to ask JuT? How many people are on chemicals and meds when a little toke would cure their ails? Our gov't doesn't make sense, it makes dollars.

Water analogy? Yeah, I'm a slippery slope kinda guy...

When you eliminate the warning signs, you eliminate the stupid.

Manny Stiles hit this out of the ballpark right here. It's a shame that HgH will be a banned substance for all just because it is being linked to a non-issue in baseball. Hgh is not steroids. Some great research and some great benefits that would benefit EVERY SINGLE person in the world could come from better understanding hgh. But the same thing could have been said about ephedra. It too had great benefits and when used properly was completely safe. More people die of aspirin each year than ever of ephedra. It's just a control issue. To make money. It's all about the money. Mo' money, mo' problems.

Dr. Sen, after reading your pieces on these hearings and actually watching the hearings myself, I have come to the thoughtful conclusion that we need more people like you in congress and less of the officals we have elected.

I totally agree...its all about money...even if these guys get caught red handed do they have to give up the millions of dollars they have already made playing the game. No. Maybe they lose the endorsements and adulation of the fans. That seems to be the biggest penalty in most cases.
