As Seen on The 3rd String Safety
It's been a week since the Giants have won the Super Bowl, and while the beauty of it has hardly faded away, the off season has begun to take the stage in Northern Jersey. Several Players now have asked for contract extensions and General Manager Jerry Reese is going to have to make some tough decisions.
The question is: Who deserves a Bigger Contract? Let's take a look.
Gibril Wilson, FS, Unrestricted Free Agent
92 Tackles, 4 INT in 2007.
Wilson has been the lone consistent member of the defensive backfield over the last few years. He isn't the best in the league at anything he does, not the biggest hitter, not the best in coverage, doesn't make the coverage calls. However, what he does is bring an element of toughness to a secondary that lacked it over the last couple of seasons. He'll never be Ed Reed, but he will always be welcome on any team he plays for.
The problem is that he wants big time money. He wants to be paid like an Ed Reed. It's not an easy call, but I have a feeling that Gibril Wilson will back down and take good, but not top at his position money and remain with the team.
Extension: Yes
David Diehl, LT, Under Contract
No Stats for OL.
In a little fact that I like to call, Jason Comack is an idiot, Diehl moved from LG to LT amidst a lot of controversy. People didn't believe that Diehl was athletic enough to play the line's premier position. Well, he was a cornerstone protecting Eli's Blindside in 2007.
Diehl is still under his contract, but it's from when he was a guard. He is going to make just 1.65 million in base salary in 2008. Meanwhile, the position he plays is one of the league's most highly compensated. He is probably around the top-10 in the league at his position, and good tackles are very hard to find.
Extend Him: Yes.
Jeremy Shockey, TE, Under Contract
59 catches, 619 yards, 5 TD
No need for the backstory here. In reality, what Shockey is looking for is some security in his job. He's seen his team be successful without and him, and is probably beginning to worry about his team seeing him as expendable. I've said it before, he isn't.
However, He doesn't need a new contract in order to feel wanted. Jerry Reese should just sit down with Shockey and explain that he is wanted in New York. He's already being paid top dollar, but slightly less than guys like Todd Heap and Jason Witten. He is just as talented as those guys, he just has to prove it over a full season.
Extension: No.
