I Wish I Knew How to Quit You: A Love Letter to Manny Ramirez

Dear Manny,

You are headed out West to the Dodgers. You will be playing on a contender, in a new environment, with a new manager, and new teammates. Is it what you really wanted? I don't know. But just know that you will be missed in Boston (at least by this Red Sox fan), both as a baseball player and as a personality.

As a baseball player, you are one of the all-time greats. Your 7 1/2 years in Boston have solidified your status as one of the greatest right-handed hitters ever. You always killed the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. You played the Green Monster in Fenway just about as well as anyone could. You delivered the occasional gem of an outfield assist and adventurous catches. You helped bring two championships to the franchise after having gone 86 years without one.

Despite the appearance of sometimes not being the most dedicated player while on the field, by most accounts, you put in a lot of work off it. You got to BP before most of your teammates. You are a smart hitter. Until recently, it seemed as though you really tried when it mattered most, winning the World Series MVP in 2004 and hitting a walk-off home run in Game 2 of the 2007 ALDS. Your teammates respected your ability and accepted/tolerated your, um, antics.

As a baseball player, you will be sorely missed by every Red Sox fan. Any who thinks otherwise is lying to themselves. You are basically irreplaceable, from an offensive standpoint.

But I'm sure there are many fans that will not miss your personality... not running out ground balls, adventurous defense, seeming to lack a fire in playing the game. Up until you started intentionally (I feel comfortable in using this word now) taking three called strikes to send a message to management against the Yankees and making ridiculous comments about said management, I was your constant apologist.

Does it bother me you didn't go 100%, 100% of the time? Yeah. Was the Red Sox clubhouse distracted? I think so. Did I ignore it? Pretty much. Why?

Because you served sports fan a very important reminder: that you are playing a game for a living.

There was no doubt in my mind that you had an absolute blast playing in Boston, feeding off the energy of the rabid fans and thriving under the spotlight. Even when you were PUT ON WAIVERS by the Red Sox after the 2003 season, it didn't affect your performance; you led the way to the 2004 World Series title.

I think my favorite You-being-You moment is your now famous catch earlier this season at Camden Yards. Who else could have made an over-the-shoulder catch, high-fived a Red Sox fan, and fired an accurate throw back to first base for a double play? No one. It is so remarkably symbolic of your career: being an excellent player, but someone who never forgets that he's playing a game.

You take yourself seriously, just not as seriously as other ballplayers. In a game mostly devoid of out-and-out personalities, you are refreshing to me, and you never appeared to be a big distraction until recently. In fact, your teammates seemed to embrace your personality. Chad Johnson in the NFL and Gilbert Arenas in the NBA are popular not only because they're good, but because they're fun. You are fun, one of the funnest baseball players of my generation. I challenge anyone to think of another baseball player as fun as you are. Fun to watch is one thing, but pure fun is another.

Fun is the key word here. In the American past time, players with class, dignity and reverence for the game are adored by fans and the media. Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome, Jason Varitek, and others are quietly successful, and approach the game with the utmost dedication. I'm sure they had fun, but they didn't always show it. Baseball is purely a profession and a passion to them. You're different. You approach it with hard work, but also plenty of perspective. You're always playing a game. Baseball is supposed to be fun! The fun was never an issue, because you continued to be one of the game's best. I love the passionate and classy players just as much the next guy, but you? I can't explain it.

I can't explain why I love you. It has a lot to do with the fact you played for my favorite team, of course. But if you were on another team, would I feel the same? I think so. You're unique, an impossibly talented baseball player with the personality to boot. You're colorful. You're not shy. You're silly. You're the chihuahua amongst bloodhounds.

But my love for the Red Sox is greater than my love for you. Apparently, it got to the point where your personality got bigger than your ability and passion for the game. You though, you were bigger than the game. You started having too much fun, or maybe not as much, and you became frustrated and whiny. You put dollar signs in front of a pennant race. You were selfish. You weren't fun, you were flat out maddening.

When Nomar was traded to the Cubs in 2004, he wasn't my favorite player; Pedro was, because he was a great pitcher and because he was fun. It's different now; I'm as big a Red Sox fan as I am a baseball fan. One of my favorite players is gone.

Thanks for everything. You were great, and will continue to be great, I'm sure. Keep having fun. You will be missed.

Adios,

Megan Cassidy

He is. I'm excited. But you should be more excited. You gave up a couple of prospects for a Hall of Famer who still has plenty left in the tank. See you in the playoffs.

my friend, a yankees fan, and i were talking about this... The yankees traded Kyle Farnsworth, who has basically sucked in New York and couldn't be given away last year for a probable top 5 catcher (or at least top 10) of all time...even if he is past his prime...he's clearly better than jose molina and has a ring...so if leadership is an issue, you've got that too...

Yup, just checked, he's a free agent after '09. Bay is 30 years old. It'll be interesting to see what they do now that the Brandon Moss era is over.

Ok...so Bay at 7.5 mil next year That's a reduction of roughly 12.5 mil. Drew's in right, Ellbury (assumably) is in center. Here's an idea...any chance the sox add Tex at seasons end...odds are they'd have to bid with the yanks though...

Tex on the Sox...wahwahweewah... That's my ideal scenario. I think the talk was Youkilis would move to left if Tex came to play first. With Bay here now, that complicates things. If they had let Manny walk, they would have been able to do it.

The Red Sox players voted 24 to 1 last night to trade him (the 1 was Ortiz). He HAD to go. I'm grateful for what he did for the Sox, but to say I'll miss him would be incorrect. I'll miss the good times back in '04, and '07, but I won't miss HIM.

Joe Torre is Manny Ramirez's manager. That's just weird.

The Red Sox just made a big, big, BIG mistake. You just can't replace the value of what Manny brought to that lineup. It will be interesting to see how Ortiz plays without Manny. At the same time, the LA Dodgers may have just won themselves the NL West. Joe Torre dealt well with big egos on the Yankees. How ironic is it that Torre will be Manny's manager now? The major weakness for the Dodgers has been at the plate. With Manny, the Dodgers instantly moved up 2 notches in that regard. LA-LA Land is happy tonight.

If the Red Sox stepped up and disciplined Manny's antics from the get-go of his tenure in Boston, it would have not escalated to this point. Certainly there was reason for him to be traded as he had indeed crossed the line recently. But I believe the franchise needs to take a hit for letting Manny practically dictate things until he eventually crossed the line. A hard-line stance on Manny from the front office from Jump street would have prevented this whole thing. I'm of the opinion that this team would have eventually found their way out of their struggles and that Manny would have eventually shut his mouth and produced. The clubhouse in Boston will be more peaceful, but there is now a BIG void in that lineup. Manny absolutely brought this on himself, but both parties deserve a significant amount of the blame.

I don't know how big of a void there is. Bay is hitting .282 with a .375 OBP, .519 slugging, 22 homers, 64 RBI. Manny was at .299, .398, .529, 20, 64. Bay will probably hit in front of Ortiz, and Fenway Park isn't exactly bad for right handed hitters.

You're 100% right about the management not taking a stance. Manny was signed by the old ownership, and was Dan Duquette's golden boy. The new owners were also very laissez-fair, letting him do whatever he wanted. John Henry was a big-time enabler of Manny, not Terry Francona, as punk columnist Dan Shaughnessy would have people believe.

eh? I'm not sure where Bay will bat, Ellsbury's leadoff and Pedroia ain't movin from 2 (plus bay's not a 2...duh)...if you're suggesting Ortiz bats 4, I'm just not sure I believe it'll be Ellsbury-Pedroia-Ortiz-Drew-Bay-Lowell...though the Drew-Bay-Lowell could be moved around quite a bit...

They had Pedroia leading off the other day, with Youk hitting 2nd and Jacoby hitting 9th...I think that could work out well until Ellsbury stops misrembering how to hit. Bay/Ortiz could be 3/4, Drew 5, etc.

Pedroia has been moved to leadoff, because unlike Ellsbury, he can get on base. Bay will hit 2nd, 3rd, or possibly 5th. But I'd rather see him and Youkilis trading the 2 spot and 3 spot.

I think this trade actually will cut Ellsbury's playing time. It's pretty obvious he's been playing less and less lately because of coming back to earth, and when he has played he's been hitting ninth on occasion.

With Manny gone, Francona has no reason to give Ellsbury defensive replacement duty in left, or when Manny's knee "hurts" a day off.

Pedroia

Youkilis

Bay (against lefties, Drew here against righties)

Ortiz

Drew (see above)

Lowell

Varitek/Cash

Lowrie/Cora/Lugo

Crisp/Ellsbury

You're probably right. Maybe he does need some time off...he hasn't been the same since he hurt his wrist. It's not like he's David Ortiz as far as importance to the lineup goes, but it would certainly help if he could get going again.

Meg, nice letter. I think it sums up what is the essence of being a fan. You don't have to necessarily like the player - you might just like what that player does. Manny was an interesting player, no doubt. It may have ticked me off to hear some of the stories, but it was never dull. My closest comparison is Scott Rolen. Clearly, not a hall of famer, but he was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal Philadelphia baseball scene. I remember losing all interest in the Phillies after he was traded. It was like there was a huge void that would never be filled (and, in my mind, still hasn't. 3rd base is still lacking). I still miss Rolen and Schilling. If we had guys like them now, I'd feel a lot better about the team's postseason chances. Things in LA ought to be interesting - Manny can sure turn it on when he wants to. Sorry for the long-windedness - keep up your fan passion and the quality writing.

If I want to watch a professional clown, I'll tune in to bull-riding. Good riddance. Your 2nd grade antics and me me me attitude won't be missed in the least. Since I have no interest in LA whatsoever, I won't be forced to see your silly pajamas and fake dreads anymore! Hopefully though Joe will sit you down and let you know that acting like a kid with ADD and no boundaries isn't gonna fly any longer.

Any team player that would intentionally drag a team down by under-performing just because they had a personal axe to grind with management should be benched permanently. I don't care what contributuions were made in the past. It's time players that think they're bigger than the team are run out of sports. (hear that Brett Favre??)

Good article, Meg. It's nice to finally read something positive about Manny from a Red Sox fan, for once.

All I have have heard this season is all of these complaints about Manny: how he's making 20 million a year, how he doesn't put his 100% in the game, how "he doesn't care about winning anymore", how he's a distraction... blah blah blah.

First off, I didn't hear any Sawx fans complain when Manny hit the walkoff in Game 2 against the Angels last year and helped win the Red Sox 2 championship rings. He made the game fun and entertaining to watch and is one of the most flamboyant players in the MLB. You may not like him at times because he doesn't hustle as much as he should, but he did very well in clutch situations and when it counted.

Manny, you showed us (and will still show us) that you CAN play baseball in a way like no other. You will always be remembered as one of the best players to wear a Red Sox uniform. Thank you for all the memories.

The child-like qualities that made Manny so fun to watch here in Boston (he was my favorite player since that first ame winning hit against the Yankees), unfortunately were not as pleasant when those qualities showed up in his business dealings. Shoving people when you don't get your way and spitefully refusing to run out ground balls are things little boys do. Not 36 year old men. With anyone, you take the good with the bad. I, for one, had just had a little too much of the bad with Manny. Hopefully he is happy in LA.

Addition by subtraction. You can replace Manny Ramirez using the 20 million dollars you ARENT gonna pay him next year. As long as Theo doesnt go gaga over another Julio Lugo and give him 16 million of it that is.
