Hurricanes storm past Boston

The Boston Bruins went into their game with the Carolina Hurricanes on January 8 at the TD Banknorth Garden looking to extend a three game winning streak. However, Eric Staal, Cam Ward and the rest of the Hurricanes would have nothing of it.

Tim Thomas played an excellent game stopping 27 shots, however to best Ward at the other end, who only stopped 19 (of 19) he needed to stop all 28.

In an eventful first period that saw a fight just three minutes in between Shawn Thorton and Wade Brookbank the Bruins out shot the visitors 8-4. That would not be the case for the rest of the game. As the Hurricanes came out firing in the second period putting 17 shots on Thomas compared to the 6 that Ward faced at the other end. Eric Staal found the back of the net on one of those shots just after the 18 minute mark of the second period. The goal was assisted by Niclas Wallin and Chad Larose. The third period was a rather uneventful one that saw the Bruins only muster 5 shots and the Hurricanes only put 7 on goal.

The Carolina Hurricanes made a move to bolster their banged up line up just hours before the game. They signed former Bruin first round pick Sergi Samsonov off of waivers. It is expected that he will join the team on Wednesday and begin to play as early as the weekend.

The Boston Bruins will play host to the Montreal Canadians at the Garden (I will be there!) and the Hurricanes host the New Jersey Devils on the same day.
