About the Author

Erooster
Ex-collegiate athlete, now a mediocre sports writer.

I am an avid fan of the CFL and one of the primary editors of the CFL player profile pages. I am also big into hunting. Ducks, geese, upland, pigs, deer, elk, and predators.

Currently, roughly 50% of the meat that I eat is animals that I have killed.

Is hunting a sport?

The sport channels show hunting programs on them during the weekends, but does that constitute sport?

I don’t think of it as a sport per se, but as a form of fun. Whatever your thoughts are on the subject has no bearing on this article.

I have missed time on ACGM due to my hunting interests. Two weeks ago was a wild pig hunting trip, followed by a predator hunting trip yesterday. Yeah, that gives me two weeks that I could have been here, but I had to get other things to get done first.

Anyway, two weeks ago was the wild pig trip. I left my home in the early morning to meet up with my brother and a friend, Webb at his house. Also joining the hunting party was the Webb’s dog, Houdini. Houdini being a half Black Lab and half Pit Bull mix is one of the best pig hunting dogs that I have ever worked around. From there we went west into the California coastal mountains.

The day started off around freezing temperatures with a twenty mph constant wind. We headed out in one of the trucks to find the elusive pigs at sunrise. Everywhere we went, however, yielded many tracks and no animals. Around 0930, we exited the vehicle to brave the outdoors and get a bit of walking done to warm up.

The three of us were walking the road, line abreast and came around the corner to find a young boar rooting 30 yards to our right. Startled by the proximity of the pig and the subsequent barking and harassment by the dog, we all failed to get the immediate shot. From there, the hunt could only be described as chaotic chasing. We all took off running to get an angle on the pig. My brother ran left with Webb and myself taking the road, and the near vertical mountainside to our right. I was getting gassed and had to slow down, just as I came around the left hand corner, I heard a crack from my brother’s rifle off to my left and the Whack! of the bullet striking the pig to the right. Houdini grabbed the pig and brought it back down to the stream at the bottom of the mountain.

Image:Brother's Pig April 2008.jpg

After the gutting and picture taking, we made out way out of the area to go home. We headed out one of the many dirt roads to get back to the paved section and out of the area. However, upon making a sweeping right-hand turn, we noticed seven pigs sitting out in a field some 400 ahead of us. Between us and the field were few trees and a big stream, with the bridge crossing behind our truck. We observed the animals for a short time until they started to bolt. So, we turned around and drove like mad to get back to the bridge and over to the field to find them again. We all piled out and ran again to find the pigs. I ended up at the top of a ridge looking for a direction of movement with the other two guys doing the same on other ridges. All to no avail, we somehow lost the pigs. My brother and walked back past the truck to find Webb and Houdini.

Coming out from behind a hill, we saw Webb waving and directing our butts to his location. So we jogged up to his location and he pointed out a family group of now eleven pigs in the field. We made a plan and I led the group out, kneeled in the clear and shot the largest boar in the group. Webb fired right after me and took down the #2 boar.

Image:Webb & I.JPG

Now, our great day had turned into a fantastic day! Three hunters, three dead pigs. What more could you ask for in a hunting trip? Webb and I gutted our pigs and took some pictures then we headed out for real this time.

Side Note: The pig my brother shot was around 150 lbs, Webb's pig about 100 to 125 lbs, and my pig was somewhere around 225 lbs.

Update 28 May, 2008: I received 110 pounds of total meat from the butcher. 25 pounds of that was in the hams.

I have my opinions about hunting, but I'll keep it to myself.

A well written article Erooster, sounds like you guys will be eating bacon for a long time to come. You bagged 3 in one day!

But can you beat this?

In most states, there's open season on wild pigs. In fact, my home state encourages you to kill as many as you want. They are a threat to agriculture and some of these animals have been known to be diease carriers.

With my family being avid hunters--white tail deer, mostly--I tried it when I became of age. I shot my first deer, directly through the heart on a dead run, at 16 years old and have never done it since. It's not my thing. But at least I can say I've tried it before I made my decision.

I want a white tail, but out here it is mule deer. I went through a phase of just not wanting to go big game hunting. Then after I turned 35, I went into hunting machine mode. Love the sport. Maybe things will change for you when you get to a certain age, or not.

I alway enjoy a good hunting story.

I gave up the gun hunt (white tail) because of all the hunting pressure here in the Northern Midwest. Once I moved from Wisconsin, I was forced to hunt on public land and there are just too many weekend warriors for my taste. Too many guys who think it's OK to bring a pint with them into the woods.

I switched to bow hunting exclusively. I find the people are much more serious about the hunt and there aren't nearly as many of them.

Now that I've put down roots in rural Indiana, I've seen several private lands that appear to have a heavy white tail population. One of my summer activities is to find the land owners and get permisstion to scout and hunt their property.

In 2007, my buddies from college started an annual boar hunt in lower Michigan. I haven't gone yet, but I hope to in the future.

Cheezer, I've got a buddy who is exclusively a bow hunter, and I have to agree with your assessment of bow vs gun hunters. He's a joker, and all-around wiseass, but when it comes to the subject of bow hunting, you can tell the joking is gone, and he takes it seriously. Not only the hunting aspects of it, but the safety issues, which I find very refreshing. Like you, I have known many gun hunters whose equipment isn't complete without a small flask in the back pocket. Never a good thing when you're around firearms.

Didn't the incident with the guy that shot those hunters and claimed self defense take place in Wisconsin? I think the guy that did it wound up in prison and they had to send him to Iowa to serve his sentence out because of the threats he was getting.

As a person that has never hunted before (I live by the beaches in NJ), this article was somewhat foreign to me as I couldn't relate. However, although hunting is not my cup of tea sounds like the people that do it, really enjoy it. And i agree that it's not a sport.

Hunting is not a sport. It's a random act of violence. I'm not surprised that so many posters here enjoy it , but I am actually a little surprised that I seem to be the only one that finds it unsettling. Oh well, I do support your right to hunt even though it feels too close to murder for me. This is a well-written article but I can't vote for it on principle.

Hmmm ... I don't know, Erooster. What did that pig do to you? … Did it break into your house late at night looking for money to buy drugs with? … Did it fondle your kids when it worked as a counselor at summer camp? … Was it your best friend until it slept with your wife? … Did it get shot in a pig versus human gang rumble? … Was it the President of the United States and killing it was your only way to impress Jodie Foster? … Killing that pig wasn’t an accomplishment, it was just some innocent thing you shot from a safe distance, then after it was dead, you puffed-up your chest and took pictures while standing over it, as though you had done something brave. Now, if you would have taken photos while wrestling it with your bare hands, I would have been impressed.

It must have sucked when cavemen had to hunt..

The pig didn't do anything to the caveman but it had to eat meat to survive.

I don't like hunting nowadays, but in certain cases it's a cheaper way to get good meat.:)

The pig is food. Hunting pigs for food is good sport and good fun. Just because you get your pork from a store, if in fact you do eat pork, and I get mine from the wild, there is no reason to get testy.

Wild pigs are a threat to agriculture as well as livestock and domestic animals. They do damage to crops also, so killing these animals is justified. In my home state, Georgia and others, there is an open season with no limit. In other words, the state WANTS you to kill these animals.

That's not relevant because the opening line of this post asked - "Is hunting a sport?" I answered "No." The second paragraph said - "Whatever your thoughts are on the subject has no bearing on this article." This means that we're not having a dialogue and he doesn't want to hear a point-of-view that is different than his, he just wants to show off his death photos. So, I will just say - "That's a big pig. Good killing!" - and go back to reading posts about sports again.

It is relevant. If you are vegetarian, then I can respect that, even if I'm not, because at least it would be consistent. If you are not a vegetarian then you are being extremely hypocritical. Can't say it's wrong to kill for food if you are just letting someone else do the killing for you.

He never said that he kills for food. He said in the second paragraph - "I don’t think of it as a sport per se, but as a form of fun." He never, in fact, mentions food. The entire story is a retelling of how the men and their dogs had so much "fun" chasing and then shooting the pigs. These guys are just sport hunters, they may eat their victims, but to say that they are justified because people eat meat is flawed logic. They are NOT the ones who we buy our meat from, and the meat we consume is not chased down, blasted with a rifle, dragged through the dirt, and then thrown into the back of a filthy pick-up truck before it ends up on our plates. Anyway, I'm done with this pig killing post. Congratulations, Erooster! I don't like the idea of killing things for fun, but as I said before, I DO SUPPORT YOUR RIGHTS to engage in this disgusting and unnecessary hobby which will eventually make you sick and cause havoc with your karma.

I respect your opinion to disagree with what I do to get food. Yes, I do kill animals for food. I prefer animal meat that has come from the wild, than animal meat that has come from a farm. Currently 50% of the meat that I consume comes from the wild. I would love to get that percentage higher.

It is possible to get sick from meat at the grocery store as well as from the wild.

I don't believe in karma, but thanks again for your opinion.

Your right, they are packed like sardines and walk around in a thick layer of their own shit before being herded in to be slaughtered. All the while due to their rediculously close quarters, they are constantly being pumped with antibiotics, which are in turn creating super bugs for which we don't have antibiotics. Long live MRSA.

Hunting serves a number of purposes, and so longs as the animals aren't being wasted, then it really is no different than buying a pork chop at the store. I for one, will just go to the grocery store, but I certainly don't think killing and eating an animal will wreak havoc on your Karma.

These animals are a threat to not only agriculture, they are a threat to domestic pigs. Remember the Africianized Bees? It's almost the same principle. These pigs root up food on farms not only for humans but for livestock and destory crops, so they are a nusance animal. There is an open season in Georgia and you can kill either gender and kill as many as you want. You would need a big game license (which can be used to hunt deer) and you can either kill them with a gun (the best way to do it - don't use a .22. It's like using a BB gun. Use a .223 instead. It's faster and you get more colateral damage), spear or bow and arrow.

I have a cousin that works for GANDR (Georgia Department of Natural Resources) and if we don't do our part and hunt these critters down, they could ruin domestic pig farming.

One more thing... the night before the Georgia Legislature gets under way, they have a wild pig served to the legislators that are in Atlanta. The meat is not bad, for a wild animal.
