Sj-hypocycloid
Mike Frangione has engaged himself in the noble calling of sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great learning experience and also a great deal of fun.

♪♪♪♪  How do you solve a problem like J-Roll?

He climbs the order and gets an ofer

His uniform has got a tear

He whiffs on his way to .207

And pitch selection ain't there

And underneath his Oakleys

He has bravado in his heart

I even heard him singing in the dugout

He's always loathe to take

But his lack of patience is unreal

He's always loathe for walking

Only 16 times this year

I hate to have to say it

But I very firmly feel

Right now, he's not an asset to the Phillies

I'd like to say a word in his behalf

J-Roll is a fan favorite!

How do you solve a problem like J-Roll?

How do you stanch a proud man of renown?

How do you find a word that means J-Roll?

A fielding whiz! A baserunning threat! An MVP!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell him

Many a thing he ought to understand

But how do you make him stay

And listen to all you say

How do you get Charlie on board?

Oh, how do you solve a problem like J-Roll?

How do you hold a talented mofo in your hand?

When I'm watching him I'm confused

Out of focus and contused

And I never know exactly why he's there

In the leadoff spot - despair!

He's swinging like a tether

He's a player! He's a leader! He's a fan fave!

He strikes out with some zest

Drive a manager to his rest

He could throw a whirling dervish out at first

He is talented! He is wild!

He's a riddle! He's a child!

He's a headache! He's a problem!

He leads off?!?

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Charlie?

Please, Charlie move Jimmy down in the order!

Sing it to the tune of the great Rodgers and Hammerstein song "Maria" from the great movie The Sound of Music.

I apologize heartily to Mssrs. Rodgers and Hammerstein for what I've done to their fine creation.

I like the way you presented your points in this article, Sj.

I definitely agree with you, too. Move J-Roll to the bottom of the order so he can work out of the slump he's in. Well, actually, it could be considered permanent if he can't work out of it. He hasn't been that productive MVP since he got injured last year; I believe it was May of 2008.

Now, he's hitting .205. A former MVP should NOT be battling to get out of the Mendoza line. I think Victorino would do very well as a leadoff man, with Jayson Werth batting in the #2 spot. He's come a long way since coming to the Phillies. And from what I hear, he's tough to get out for pitchers (in other words, it takes many pitches to get him out, if they do get him out, due to his good eye and his ability to foul pitches off).

There's really been a lot of chatter about this on the Philly radio stations. Some people are even calling for the Phils to shop Rollins around. I think that's a bit extreme. I think that Rollins was never really a prototypical leadoff hitter, but when you're hitting .290 and 30 homers, that's acceptable.

I'd think that even Rollins should acknowledge that his slump is adversely affecting the team. I'd like to think that he'd be man enough to suggest that he be moved down in the lineup. This would be the "team player" thing to do. So many people in Philly are saying that Charlie is loyal to his players. I don't see this as loyalty anymore. Charlie's given enough rope. It's time for Jimmy to do the right thing.

I definitely agree with you. I don't what it is, but whatever it is... Charlie needs to do the right thing in moving him down in the lineup, and J-Roll needs to accept that. And true, if he really wanted to do what's right for the team, he'd ask for him to move down, at least until his slump is not a slump anymore. However, no offense to Phillies fans, but I've always thought of Rollins as a little bit of an arrogant, cocky player. Not to take anything away from him, but whenever someone is willing to go on the air and tell the entire world that this is the Phillies' division... they must be very overconfident, cocky, stupid, or more than one of those things. J-Roll leaving the Phillies...? Yeah... that is extreme. Plus, who would they have filling him in? Eric Bruntlett? Miguel Cairo? I don't know. The Phillies wouldn't be the Phillies without Rollins. He's been the (or one of the) franchise's go-to guy since the beginning of this decade.

Cocky's okay - especially when you go out and win the division! :-) But now it's time to be a leader. I'm waiting. And I can't imagine the Phils without Rollins. It's just that now they need something else in that leadoff spot. I don't know if they have a true leadoff hitter, but something needs to change.

J-Roll (though he's looked better this week) either needs to be sat down or pushed through...one way or another

On a related note, you know who would have smacked this team mid-way though that though June? Aaron Rowand...I miss him

I miss Rowand as well. But now I don't know where they'd put him. They could totally use his attitude though.
