About the Author

Alex Holowczak
I am from Birmingham, England, and I am a fan of many sports, including F1, snooker and cricket. I don't much care for "soccer".

My name is not of British decent, but of Ukrainian decent. My grandfather was from Lvov, a town in Western Ukraine. During the Second World War, he ended up in Britain.

I am the reigning ArmchairGM Pool and Chess Champion, and I hope to retain my Pool trophy in 2008.

The draw for the 2008 World Snooker Championship was conducted at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield today by the famous cricketing umpire Dickie Bird. It was broadcast online around the world. The following draw was made:

Seed   Qualifier
Flag of Scotland John Higgins v Matthew Stevens Flag of Wales
Flag of Wales Ryan Day v Michael Judge Flag of Ireland
Flag of the People's Republic of China Ding Junhui v Marco Fu Flag of Hong Kong
Flag of Scotland Stephen Hendry v Mark Allen Flag of Northern Ireland
Flag of England Ronnie O'Sullivan v Liu Chuang Flag of the People's Republic of China
Flag of Wales Mark Williams v Mark Davis Flag of England
Flag of England Stephen Lee v Joe Swail Flag of Northern Ireland
Flag of Ireland Ken Doherty v Liang Wenbo Flag of the People's Republic of China
Flag of England Shaun Murphy v Dave Harold Flag of England
Flag of England Allister Carter v Barry Hawkins Flag of England
Flag of England Mark Selby v Mark King Flag of England
Flag of England Peter Ebdon v Jamie Cope Flag of England
Flag of Australia Neil Robertson v Nigel Bond Flag of England
Flag of Scotland Stephen Maguire v Anthony Hamilton Flag of England
Flag of England Steve Davis v Stuart Bingham Flag of England
Flag of Scotland Graeme Dott v Joe Perry Flag of England

The best match is undoubtedly the Higgins-Stevens game, the reigning two-time champion against twice a runner-up. Hendry-Allen should be entertaining, too. There will be the first ever all-Chinese match in the history of the World Championship, as Ding takes on Fu. The oldest man in the draw is Steve Davis, he's now 50, but will be favourite to win against Stuart Bingham. He will need to win that match, and probably his second round game to remain in the top 16. Davis is the oldest player in the event since Terry Griffiths in the 1997 World Snooker Championship. There are a record number of qualifiers from China, 3 or 4 if you include Hong Kong (Fu). Liu Chuang starts against Ronnie O'Sullivan, and Liang Wenbo plays Ken Doherty, the 1997 champion.

A more detailed preview will be shortly written.

I think Wilkinson would have been the best in the world if it wasn't for his injuries for 4 years. He shouldn't retire, he's plenty good enough for Newcastle. It's not his fault if he gets selected for England all the time!

I think he is still good enough for Newcastle and he still has something left in the tank. That being said, he did play a terrible game against Scotland on Saturday.

It wasn't only him, in fairness. England generally were useless.

True the whole team is not very good, and to his defense a bad fly half stands out even more when playing on a bad team. But his kicking, both under pressure on penalties and for touch just wasnt very good. It was not up to the par of what you want from Wilkinson.

Should've been "was" useless. But yeah, I think the England team isn't bad - we've won our last 2 games in the Stade de France against the French. We just have no consistency.

Yeah, I think consistency is the perfect term to use. Because England really does show some promise from time to time, but then they fall off. So who knows really I guess. I think they need to open up their attack more. Especially if the ELV's come to the northern hemisphere England more than anyone will suffer with their current style of play.
