Hamels dealt "low blow" by Phils

Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels felt he was disrespected in his recent contract negotiations with the club and should have been paid more coming off a season in which he posted a 15-5 record and was named to the all-star team. The pitcher requested $750,000 but only received between $490,000 and 500,000, a raise of 25% from the $400,000 he was paid last season.

Hamels had this to say in response when asked if he was angry with the renewal offered to him by the club,

> "I'm not angry," Hamels said, searching for a word. "I just feel a little ... I can't think of a good word. I'm a little surprised. It's about respect, and when people don't show that to you, you're caught off guard. I thought it was a low blow."

This article brings up a good point that at the same points in their career that Scott Kazmir and Chien-Ming Wang, similar pitchers to Hamels, were paid less then he will be paid this upcoming season.

Despite feeling slighted Hamels was sure to express his interest in being a member of the Phillies organization for a long time to come,

> "I love playing here, and I don't want to face Chase [Utley] and Ryan," Hamels said. "I'd rather be teammates with them for a long time."

Both of these guys he mentions in this quote have been through similar situations with the Phillies, but unlike the lefty have been less vocal about their displeasure. The organization awarded Utley with a lucrative $84 million extension last year for his patience and Ryan Howard will almost surely receive the same type of compensation when the team is forced to give him one based on years of service. Don't feel bad for the power hitting first baseman he recently won his arbitration case and will get paid $10 million this year, over $9 million more then he earned last season.

Jim Salisbury of the Inquirer didn't like Cole's attitude...

Wait, you linked to it...nice work sportspoint...

I have to agree with Salisbury, Cole has less than 3 full years, is always injured and is very young. Prince Fielder has the same issue.

But if Cole keeps performing, he'll get paid...hopefully around 5 mil next year

I wouldn't pay him more than he's worth until he gets to arbitration and you can get some cost certainty. That's just not fiscally sound. Plus, like Jut said, he's got some injury problems.

Howard made something like 700k when he had Hamels's service time...if Hamels would have won the Cy Young, I'd say he deserved 700k as well ; - )

Cole may have been thinking he should be getting closer to what Ryan Howard is getting but Hamels has only played part of one season and one full season for the Phillies. While he was in the minors he must have missed a lot of starts. In 4 minor league seasons he started only 36 games while in a season and part of another season with Phillies he has started 51 games. Hamels had fantastic stats in his first minor league season striking out 115 in 74 innings and giving up 32 hits in 74 innings. In his first three minor league seasons he gave up a total of 2 home runs over those years for 2 home runs given up in his first 153 minor league innings. Like JuTM says Hamels will get paid. He will just have to be patient. Michael Young played for $450,000 after his first three years and he had over 200 hits his third year before being paid $2.5 million in 2004.Last year he made $3.5 million after having four straight 200 hit seasons and hitting over .300 four straight seasons and then last year had 200 hits again and hit .300 again.

Show of hands: Who thinks this will have *any* impact on whether he re-signs with the Phillies as a free agent in 4 years? If it's more than zero, color me shocked.

Well if he is that damn unhappy at "only" making half a million, then he can quit baseball and make his living doing something else. With this country headed towards a recession (already in?), these athletes should just shut the fack up about their contracts and keep their business affairs between themselves, agents and GMs.

like many player before him he will just make a mad increse in arbitraion next season, it really stinks for the harderst sport to make it to the pros, with the minors and stuff to under pay players for up to 3 years is a shame

the theory has been, they wanna tell Myers that he's gonna be in the rotation...i think its kinda dumb...but I don't think Hamels really cared...he'll have plenty of Opening day starts...

Phillies did what they had to so they can keep Howard happy. If he stays healthy all season no telling what he will do. In his last two seasons he has hit 105 home runs and driven in 285 runs. My only concern was the 45 point dropoff in batting average last season and the 75 point dropoff in slugging percentage but even then his slugging percentage was still .584 so not that big of a deal.
