Marc-Andre Fleury watches a goal slip past him

Read more at Pensburgh.com

Apparently at some point Thursday night the Penguins decided they were only going to play one period.  "Hell" said Crosby, "let's make it a real challenge."  [not an official statement, strictly a work of fiction]

That would almost seem like the Penguins' game plan for Game 4, a disappointing performance at best.  The Penguins and Flyers each mustered up 21 minutes of penalty time, but the advantage was by far in Philly's favor.  Pittsburgh's inability to stay clear of the box early in the game resulted in 10 minutes of penalties in the first and three Philadelphia goals; two of which came on the man advantage.

Fleury maintained a healthy presence in net from the second period on, but it was his offense's inability to muster up an attack and Marty Biron's goaltending that kept the game close but too far from Pitt's reach.

In typical 'sleeper mode', the only attack from Pittsburgh's end came from the stick of Jordan Staal.  In the wake of his grandfather's passing, Staal tallied both goals four and five of the postseason and played with unbridled tenacity for goal number three.  But it was Philly's Joffrey Lupul who got the final say with the empty net notch for his second of the game and the final goal of the 4-2 finale.

Overall - horrible game.  Philadelphia came out of the gate needing a win and they played like it was their last game of the season.  Despite efforts of coming back later in the game, Pitt should have never found themselves in that position to begin with.  A terrible first period resulted in desperation attempts for the remainder of the game.  Wild passing, off target shots and poor center ice puck handling caused a break in momentum and a boost to the Philly squad.

To say Pitt dropped this game in favor of winning the series at home would be a lie.  They're not about ready to play a selective game at this point.  Each and every guy out there on the ice is anxious to finish this series and move on to the next round.  But if Philly has their way this won't be ending anytime soon.

Game 5 in Pittsburgh Sunday at 7:30.

As excited as I am for this win, the odds of Philly coming back in this series are as good as me having the correct Power Ball numbers tonight...

I disagree with you saying that Pitt dropped this on purpose. At least... subconsciously. They know that they are going to have a week to rest no matter how long it takes them to close out the series. Also, playing at home in front of their fans. Subconsciously these guys didn't care to play with the same passion that they normally display...

Jordan Staal has the angel of his grandfather with him on the ice. What an individual performance he is showing...

What happened to Malkin? He is playing horribly this series (game one exception). It is obvious that the Flyers are all over him as far as hitting. Are they in his head?

Crosby made some great plays to set up teammates but the Flyers defense was able to intercept the puck. Crosby did play well though...

Richards is fackingamazing...

The Flyers came out playing fast and with passion but seemed to get worn down by the third period. The Penguins certainly have the advantage as far as endurance is concerned...

I loved the big hitting. The Flyers big hits may have been a little late though. Still, it really got the crowd into the game...

FIGHTING!!! Against popular belief, I love fighting in the playoffs...

Overall - great game... for Philly...

It is nice to see the Flyers not going down without some fight. This series is basically over, but at least Philly is going to make the cross-state birdies fight for the final win...

"To say Pitt dropped this game in favor of winning the series at home would be a lie."

I didn't say they dropped the game on purpose, I'm pretty convinced they just plain sucked in this game.

If Pitt could play the first period like they did the second the it would've been 2-2 in the third. But again, IF - not DID, and that is why we're heading to a Game 5.

100% correct frank...clearly pittsburgh didn't want to lose, but this Flyers squad just wasn't doing to lose 2 at home... If Philly wins game 5...they should win 6 and then 7 is a total crapshoot...

Well I don't see that happening. Pitt won't let Philly take them down on home ice.

Why wasn't Laraque sent out last night after Upshalls hit on Staal or after Richards started with Crosby. The Flyers played very physical last night, particularly after the whistle but Therrien didn't address it at all. Someone needs knocked the fack out before one of our guys get hurt. It's hard physical hockey, and Therrien isn't letting his tough guys participate.

It's weird, the refs seem to call ticky tacky crap in the first period on both teams and then they put away the whistles for the rest of the game. I thought maybe the refs changed when the games went to Philly.

i think people have preferences as far as how close to call it, but the goal of all refs should be consistency That being said, I have no idea Steel Town, though i believe not

It's just like how they were loving the hooking calls on both teams in Game 3 - and then, they just stopped. This inconsistency is very consistent.
