Fixing the Finals in one easy step

As everyone knows, the NBA Finals were a little anticlimactic. A lot of people think the playoffs need to be fixed and everyone seems to know how to do it. I'm no different: I've got my suggestion, too.

Do nothing.

Look, we've been through this before. In the 90's the Bulls ruled. The 80's had the Celtics and the Lakers. Each time, fans talked about a competitive imbalance and the need to adjust. Each time, the imbalance corrected itself eventually.

The most common suggestion is seeding all sixteen teams in a super bracket, regardless of conference. There are two major problems here. The first is the current imbalanced schedule. If you switch to a super bracket, you have to go to a balanced schedule, which creates many other problems, starting with decreased emphasis on natural rivalries and an increase in travel.

The second major problem with the super bracket is what proponents actually champion: getting the best matchup in the Finals. In an ideal world, that would be great, but how would people have reacted if some combination of San Antonio/Phoenix/Dallas played for the championship? Yeah, it would be a great matchup, but you know everyone would be upset that there wasn't an Eastern team in it. They complain enough about 'late starts' for regular season and early round playoff games. What kind of noise would they make if it was the Finals? This plan has got serious flaws.

Bill Simmons has his own tricked up version of this, in which the last four spots in the super bracket are determined by a double elimination play-in tourney. He attempts to solve the playoff problem and the tanking issue. This plan might even possibly solve both. But it's too ridiculous and mocks any sanctity of sport that exists--it would be like if the BCS changed their formula every year. Oh, wait...

Everyone loved the Warriors first round upset of the Mavericks--this is the price you pay for that upset. When top teams bow out early, you shouldn't be surprised if it affects play in later rounds. The Utah/Golden State and San Antonio/Utah series probably would have never happened if not for that first round upset. Think George Mason 2006--Cinderella teams are fun until clock strikes midnight in a later round.

The only change that I wouldn't mind seeing is reseeding. Even with the first round upset, wouldn't a round two of Spurs/Warriors and Suns/Jazz, likely followed by Spurs/Suns have been better?

As for the hapless East, well, just wait. In a few years, the balance of power will swing back that way, just in time for everyone to deplore the Eastern Conference dominance.

Well said. Its just the shift and the balance of power. The league will shift back to Eastern conference powers in a few years just give it a chance

People will point to Oden and Durant headed West as a sign that the problem will continue. I say that teams in the East are relatively young right now, with a few young superstars of their own, starting with Lebron, Howard and Bosh.

Yeah, I can see Orlando growing a lot in the next year or so. The Bulls will continue to grow and improve as will Cleveland. So I think there is a lot on the horizon for the East

If the Cavaliers won at least 1 game in the Finals, would there even be a discussion about re-seeding the playoffs?

I think so. A lot of the complaining started with Spurs/Suns playing in the second round.

Bill Simmon's solution was terrible, I like John Holliger's solution a lot better: http://insid...p;id=2900512

You need Insider access but to some it up, this is how the postseason would look:

"East" Half (1E) Detroit vs. (8W) Golden State (4W) Utah vs. (5E) Chicago (2W) Phoenix vs. (7E) Washington (3E) Toronto vs. (6W) Denver

"West" Half (1W) Dallas vs. (8E) Orlando (4E) Miami vs. (5W) Houston (2E) Cleveland vs. (7W) L.A. Lakers (3W) San Antonio vs. (6E) New Jersey

That said, I agree with your proposal, do nothing. This exists in every sport: the AFC dominates the NFC right now; the AL is way better than the NL; and the West is stronger than the East in the NBA. I don't watch hockey but I was told that the situation is the same there as well.

I don't really see the point of this 'solution'. I guess it weeds out weak East teams, but that still creates the scenario where no East team could make the Finals, and everyone would then complain about that. That, and I hate anything Hollinger. But your right--this exists in every sport. How many years did the NFC dominate the Super Bowl? And now we are in the midst of AFC domination.

Hopefully that shift of power comes soon. The Spurs, not to sound cliche, are just a tad bit boring. Even though I despised Michael's Bulls they were very fun to watch. And once the Lakers are competing again, forget about it. The Finals will be second to none once again. Good article

The Spurs weren't boring in the Suns series. They weren't boring last year either in the Mavs series. I'm not sure where this idea comes from that the Spurs are boring. And you say 'once teh Lakers are competing again' as if that is just around the corner. Think you might have to wait a while on that one.

Let's see: This decade: 2000: Lakers, 2001: Lakers, 2002: Lakers, 2003: Spurs, 2004: Pistons, 2005: Spurs, 2006: Heat, 2007: Spurs. So far, the West is beating the East 6-2. I know the East is going to do something in the next couple of years. You're right, it IS the West Conference's turn to have their light shine, but, like the Lakers, like the Celtics, like the Bulls, their lights will dim. The Spurs, Mavs, and Suns are the Big 3 of the West this decade. In the east, the teams are a lot more even. IMO, we'll have to wait until Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Steve Nash, and Dirk, get out of their prime, then the East will be fine. Kobe could also be in the picture as well. Imagine if he jumps to the East. There are many questions that many people can ask. We'll see what teams will win the championships over the next few years...
