Five Stages from a Sonic Fan

Denial No. The Sonics must stay. 41 years of history. Kevin Durant. Such a bright future. Something will be worked out. The Mariners and Seahawks were practically out the door, but new ownership came in and worked out new stadium deals with the city. I am sure they will figure it out at the last minute somehow.

Anger I hate you, Clay Bennett. You are a lying scumbag. Oklahoma!? What the hell? Is there even sports there? The only thing Oklahoma is famous for is Timothy McVeigh bombing shopping malls. Why us? Why our team? You not only bought our team, but cut us off from it. Then you traded away our best players. You hired a terrible coach who is remarkably out of touch with his players.

Oh, we did not forget you, Howard Schultz. Sonic fans are boycotting your overpriced coffee, and you happen to be feeling it even more during this pseudo recession. Do not even pretend like you were the innocent victim and tried to help, because we all know you made money off this whole ordeal. I have not bought a cup of Starbucks in the past two years, and I will never do so again.

The city of Seattle, not unlike most of the nation's politicians, are just completely useless.

And you, David Stern. How dare you. You two faced liar. You loved KeyArena when it was renovated just a few years ago, calling it a "world class facility." You wrote a letter to Sacramento saying it was okay that they were not willing to pay for a new arena and that you will work with others to find a way to privately pay for a new arena. Why the preferential treatment? I know business is anything but honest, but you are still a disgusting crook. Seriously, do you really believe that Oklahoma City is more capable of hosting a team than Seattle? I thought Stern was a brilliant and intelligent man. But in the past year, he has quickly gone from the best commissioner in sports...to the worst.

Bargaining. Let's take them to court. We have a lease that says they must stay. It is legally binding. They cannot just pack up and leave as they please. It does not work that way. Steve Ballmer, save us. We want to keep the name, colors, and history of the once great Sonics franchise. We want to see the beloved legendary jerseys of Payton and Kemp hanging in the rafters of a building in Seattle.

Depression. Did we really just sell our team for $75 million? Talk about betrayal. There is no guarantee for another team? Kevin Durant is gone? You want me to root for a team from Oklahoma? Excuse me, while I go cry myself to sleep.

Acceptance. Basketball is dead to me. My Team is gone.

I'll tell you what I've told all other Seattle Sonics fans:

Your chance to keep your team left when the City of Seattle built stadiums for the Ms and 'Hawks with public money and told the Sonics to get bent. If they would of put up a new stadium for the Sonics as well then you would still have basketball. End of story.

When your City treats your NBA franchise like they are second class citizens compared to the NFL and MLB franchises then the NBA franchise is liable to find a home where they feel first class.

If Seattle doesn't fund any stadiums for anyone then this never happens as well - or all 3 teams move I'm not sure. But for sure by denying the Sonics a stadium the city sealed it's own fate.

I'd like to know where these minuses are coming from but I agree with you for the most part, however, you been to Seattle lately?

It's condos, townhomes, houses that are built 6 inches apart and they're selling at $500,000. There is no room to build any arena now, so renovation is the only option.

The Seahawks and Mariners both played in the Kingdome... a place (whose construction was finished in 1976) that was literally falling apart. Key Arena meanwhile had been renovated in 1994, or 14 years ago. In comparison the yankees refurbished yankee stadium in the 70's and have been there since. they're getting a new stadium now... 30 years later. It just seems to be to say because they gave the other two stadiums, but not the sonics that its ok for the sonics to leave seems, well... not right to me. should okc be ready to pony up for a new stadium 15 years down the road now too?

The Mariners nearly left right? Remember that year they were Cleveland bound? The same year when they made it to the ALCS. That seemed to sway the city towards building them a new stadium in which they can underachieve.

The Sonics finished with the worst record in franchise history and that's one of the other differences.

I have been to Seattle recently just the other day, and its unbelievably crowded. There is never any parking. I remember when there was talk of moving the Sonics to Belleview but it was going to cost like 100,000 dollars to make 1 parking spot or soemthing crazy like that. Then there was the talk of moving them to the Hood (Renton). That would have been an awful decision. Renovation was the only way to go with the stadium situation and it just didn't happen. But reason that Key arena needs to be renocated already is because they did a cheap job the first time around, while the city put the extra money into Qwest field and Safeco to do the job right the first time.

Seattle gave the Sonics franchise the royal shaft. To think that A-Rod's contract is worth 4 times more than what the NBA spent to sell the Sonics. Holy cow.

Wait a minute, why is Clay Bennett the one you're hating? I know he lied and all, but he made it clear that he never wanted to keep the team in Seattle.

Remember that Howard Schultz guy? The one who bought the team, ran it into the ground then sold it? Yeah, that's who you should be angry at.

And I'm sure you're old enough to vote, so uh.....the city of Seattle should be ashamed as well, a settlement means they sold the team out.

That being said, I'm quite sure Bennett had them by the balls and there was nothing they could do.

Now it's time to waste more money on figuring out what to do with the Alaskan Way Viaduct!

No room to build an Arena SSR? How do you think LA built Staples Center or NYC is building another Yankee Stadium? You tear down old shit and build new shit on top of it. Build the new arena in the Parking lot and tear down KeyArena and make it the parking lot.

Except for the part where there is practically nothing old anymore.

The only old things in Seattle are the strip clubs 2 blocks away from Pike Place.

There are no more mom and pop stores, I mean there is nothing at all.

And all those minuses are just Seattle fans who can't cope with the truth: They didn't shell out the dough and that makes losing their team partly their fault. Unlike the Brooklyn Dodgers, the fans had a say in this travesty with their tax dollars.

You really think they're going to give money to the same bozos who are still debating whether or not they should improve the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 2020 or not?
