| | | | | | Soccer’s fastest rising star, Cristiano Ronaldo, will demand that Manchester United trade him to Real Madrid in a meeting that has been scheduled with Sir Alexander Ferguson and Red Devils’ brass this coming Tuesday, according to the London Telegraph.

This is an unfortunate set of circumstances for the Old Trafford faithful, as it was beginning to look like Ronaldo would honor his current contract with the Reds. Publicly, Ronaldo has been quite ambiguous about his wishes. He was quoted as saying that it would be a dream for him to play for Real Madrid; then, a few days later, he said he couldn’t imagine leaving Old Trafford. All the while, Manchester United has been obdurate about moving the star midfielder, reiterating time and time again that he is simply not for sale.

But, after weeks of Ronaldo’s speak-no-evil tactics, it looks as though some sort of deal will be worked out and Ronaldo will be playing in La Liga instead of the English Premiership during the 2008-09 season.

Real Madrid has been in a much-publicized pursuit of the Portuguese winger, and arguably the game’s best player, since ManU won Barclay’s Premiership earlier this year. Ronaldo did what any other athlete would have done, and told the media that he would not talk to anyone about his future until after the Champions League final. In that final, United defeated Chelsea on penalty kicks. Ronaldo drove home a sick header in the opening minutes of that contest (pictured below).

Real Madrid has offered to buy Ronaldo for an astonishing 68 million pounds. Initial reports speculated that Real would offer Cristiano up to 100 million pounds if he accepted their offer. If the move is finalized and accepted, it will signify the richest soccer contract in European history…and he certainly deserves it.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of a kind. He displays first-class skills in running, dribbling, shooting, and heading. And NOBODY can do what he does on a free kick, especially within scoring distance. He's the equivalent of Adam Jones in five years...truly an all-around great player. Below you will find a link to a highlight reel, mainly showing Ronaldo's excellence from set pieces.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Gra2NMuqE

^---the entire highlight is ridiculous, but the free kick highlights from 2:00 on are just insane…

With Rooney and Tevez working the middle, Ronaldo is a luxury to the ManU offense from live play...his absence does not equate to the Red Devils' demise.

However, from set plays, which are SO important in both the Premiership and the Champions League, losing Ronaldo would be devastating for the Reds.

How will Manchester United respond in the absence of Ronaldo during free kicks if this deal goes through? Especially with the moves that Liverpool have made and with Chelsea still nipping at their heels? Even without Michael Ballack, Chelsea is still very strong defensively and they still have Drogba leading the charge on the other side of the pitch…

The free kick situation is certainly the most important aspect to evaluate if you’re in the Red Devils front office. Who will take them? And in what situations? Can they REALLY afford to lose Cristiano Ronaldo if they expect to repeat as both Premiership and Champions League victors?

Even though Ronaldo may be the best player in the world, does that mean that ManU is doomed if he goes to Madrid? Personally, I don’t think so.

I think that the Reds have plenty of fire power. Nani, the heir-apparent to the right wing if Ronaldo goes to Spain, is just as quick and can cross just as well. Nani displayed the full extent of his talents during his many minutes this past season; although many of those minutes were spent with Ronaldo occupying one of the center midfield positions.

But if any team can recover from a loss like this, it’s the Red Devils; a franchise that is spoiled with talent from top to bottom.

Speaking from a fan’s standpoint, in Ronaldo’s absence, my preference would be for Michael Carrick to take free kicks in shooting situations while either Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes take the kicks in crossing situations…but this is all hypothetical because the deal has not yet been finalized and ManU remains stubborn.

Maybe ManU will remain steadfast and won’t sell Ronaldo…but unfortunately, initial reports do not look good. This is yet another example of a star player holding their organization hostage. The organization has been nothing but supportive, as expected from a top-notch team like Manchester United.

But by the looks of things, I guess the whole Brett Favre situation isn't exclusive to American sports.

I don't care if we're talking about football, baseball, basketball, soccer, water polo, tiddlywinks...whatever. It's all getting old. Players should honor their contract, bottom line.

Greedy, self-absorbed lawyers (ahem...I mean "agents") like Scott Boras that continue to make un-capped sports leagues, like MLB, an arms race.

Just look at the MLB trade deadline. The Yankees, who by far and away have the most money, just up and decided to pick up one of the best hitting catchers of all-time after placing Posada on the DL. Could any other team, aside from the Red Sox, Angels, and Dodgers, afford that?

It's like we're all in a competition to nail the hot girl after prom. Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels fans are the cool kids with the Lamborghini and the rest of us are stuck with a broken down Camino...

I'm guessing that's how Packers' fans feel, too. Hopeless. Lost. Confused...just like O's fans.

When will it all end? Where are we going from here?

At least being a hot-shot athlete isn't exclusive to America...After all, I think we've run out of eyes to blacken...

SIDE NOTE: guys this is my first soccer blog...so go easy on me, yeah?

And for future reference, if you want to make it bigger and after the article has been posted, click edit, find the file name for the picture and change the 200px or whatever it is to 300px or 350px or whatever you want. And as I'm sure you can guess, to make it smaller, just go below 200.

Baltimore 24/7 - He has demanded a transfer, not a trade. A trade would indicate that Man U will be sending his contract to Real in exchange for the rights to another player's contract. Cristiano would like Man U to allow Real to buy his contract outright which is a transfer.

In any case Manchester should continue to stand firm. Ronaldo doesn't really want to leave, he is buying into the hype and a childhood dream. He needs to finish his contract at Manchester first.

I also think you may be confused as to the terms of the transfer deal and Ronaldo's personal contract which are two seperate things.

well, I'm here to learn...what's the difference? I'm guessing Real would significantly boost his personal contract while at the same time giving ManU something out of the transfer deal...but, again, I'm admittedly new to international soccer...I just thought I'd give it a shot...

Okay so in International Soccer as in American Sports each player is given a service contract in which they pledge their services to the club for a negotiated wage and the club then owns their rights until the contract is expired for void. That contract is worked out between the Club and the players rep or Agent. A contract can be BOUGHT or LOANED by another club pending approval of the football associations in charge of each club (e.g. English FA or US Soccer), the club that owns the rights to the contract and the confederations responsible (UEFA, CONCACAF etc.)

Now when a player's contract is SOLD that means another club has put in a transfer bid and pending the approval of said bid, will then pay a negotiated fee (transfer fee) to the club who owns the rights. On top of that the club that has bought the player can either keep the current contract in place and pay the wages agreed upon in said contract, or they can negotiate a new contract with a player.

When a player is LOANED, a club pays the club that owns the player's rights a sum of money to use the player over a given time frame (usually one season) and at the end of the loan player they can either buy the player's contract, or the player will return to his original club.

Any questions I'll be happy to answer.

Also you say losing Ronaldo wouldn't be the demise of Manchester United, which to a point is true. However you can't tell me that losing the world's best footballer doesn't seriously hinder United's chances at silverware and certainly puts them behind Liverpool and Chelsea.

on this, I'd have to disagree...he is the best soccer player in the world, and losing that is a loss to ANY team...but I think they have the tools to recover, especially with Nani on the wing...I think he's really something special and that he will soon emerge as one of the best...if not this year, than certainly in the next few years...I still have lots of confidence in Rooney and the ManU center midfield and I think that they still have a chance to repeat in the Premiership...the Champions League is another story...

If they buy Berbatov from Spurs I'll be much quicker to agree. However with the squad they currently have, and with 4 competitions to compete in (Prem, FA Cup, Carling Cup and CL) depth becomes an issue to me. With Ronaldo United has the ability to play him in 5 different starting roles and give any of those other 4 guys in attack or midfield a rest. Nani is a winger only, and can't play center mid or center forward. So with Nani pushed into everyday service and Ronaldo's versatility gone, several depth and flexibility questions arise.

Those who point to Ruud's transfer in 06 as precedent for United filling the offensive void will be reminded that it was Ronaldo who filled those large Horse-shaped shoes.

I'm not saying that United can't make up for his void, it's just a large void. Don't expect them to make it past the last 16 of the CL without Ronaldo, not past the quarterfinals of the FA or Carling Cup either. They will have to put all there efforts into winning the Prem.

Although I do have confidence in Carrick and Scholes, I can see where the center midfield would be a weak spot on the current ManU roster, so I appreciate the input...maybe it's because their front 2 are so good and the back 4/5 are just as good...they just need someone to push the offense and I think Nani is the man...

Here's what I think:

If Ronaldo is gone, they're toast. Rooney/Ronaldo/Tevez is a dream combo, and when one isn't there, they can't create anything.

I mean, Michael Carrick is garbage, he doesn't do anything but concede penalties, midfield would be atrocious, and they to me are at their weakest in depth at midfield.

Ronaldo is 23, if he wants to be a baby, so be it, it's doing bad for his reputation as a drama queen (I've seen him dive), so be it.

If he leaves, my expectations are lowered to getting a 2nd place spot.

-You're right they are a dream combo.

-Carrick is rubbish, but he has his moments. I'd rather have Scholes and Giggs in the middle but they are too old to both go 90. United still has Hargraves but like you said the depth is a serious question. Anderson developing should ease some of their worries on the left though.

-Ronaldo is the ultimate prima-donna. If you have him, you love him. If you're against him, you despise him. However you are right it would suit him best to man up, take a nut-check and finish his contract out.

Scholes and Giggs are old as you said, I want to see Nani more in the center, perhaps working on the right side a little more often, very productive with his long range efforts.

SS, I wouldn't call Carrick "garbage," but I do appreciate his talents...maybe I've been playing too much FIFA '08...but regardless, I think that he has fantastic striking ability from free kicks and that he can defend the middle well...at least well enough when you have Ferdinand and Vidic backing you up...

And LA, I do agree with you. As much as I love watching Ronaldo (he turned me on to the sport more so then Ronaldinho...and that's speaking from an American non-soccer fan perspective...), he is the best (or worst..depending on how you look at it) diver in the game. Unfortunately, diving is part of soccer, which I think turns most Americans off. They hate seeing the pansy middie who falls to the ground, clasping his ankle as if it were broken, only to pop up a moment later, dribbling the ball in full stride...I think that diving, in itself, is what turns most Americans off to soccer and I think that Ronaldo is one of the main culprits...

Baltimore I forgot to mention that players are often rated by fans based on this formula:

Transfer Fee - production + (time missed due to injury/memorable highlights) = adjusted fan value or AFV.

Carrick's absurd transfer fee (18M pounds) plus his average production and a wash in missed time and memorable moments making him "rubbish" despite the fact he is by all means a solid Prem midfielder.
