Favre Efficient Again in the Battle for Broadway

The battle for Broadway took place tonight in the Meadowlands as the Jets took on the Giants. A third quarter Mike Nugent field goal ended up being the difference as the Jets won the battle 10-7.

Brett Favre played the entire first half for the Jets and was efficient despite the persistent pass rush of the New York Giants line. He was sacked once and hit on several other occastions but played well, going 9-12 for 96 yards. His best completion that counted was a 30 yard pass to Jerricho Cotchery. I say the best that counted because the best pass of the day by Favre was a deep go route down the right side by Cotchery, where Favre hit him in stride and 49 yards later Jerricho was in the endzone. The play was called back on an illegal formation penalty. A 29 yarder to Brad Smith also was called back, this time on an illegal shift. The penalties and the lack of any excitement in the running game, left the first half scoreless. Thomas Jones and Leon Washington combined for 21 yards rushing.

Kellen Clemens led the tiebreaking opening drive in the 3rd quarter, 17 plays 72 yards, taking 9:18, ending with a Mike Nugent 24 yard field goal. Clemens also finished the game 9-12 , throwing for 83 yards. In limited action, Brett Ratliff went 2-4 for 51 yards, throwing the Jets only touchdown pass to Paul Raymond.

A great sign in the game for Jets fans was the emerging pass rush. They finished the game with 8 sacks of Giants' quarterbacks, including 2 by the newly acquired Calvin Pace. The Jets front 7 spent a great deal of time in the Giants backfield tonight, which is a great sign to all Jet fans, who are used to quarterbacks having all day to throw.

The Jets finish the preseason on Thursday in Philadelphia against the Eagles.
