Fantasy Rankings: NFC West Quarterbacks in 2009

The NFC West features one of the top fantasy QBs in the game, two others trying to atone for a poor 2008, and an excellent potential sleeper.

1. Kurt Warner

Warner had a tremendous season in 2008. Playing with a wealth of talent at the receiver position, and on a team which abandoned the run, the 37-year old vet threw for more than 4,500 yards and 30 TDs, much to fantasy owners’ delight.

A repeat of those numbers in 2009 will be hard to duplicate however. First, there’s always the Super Bowl hangover, and second, there have been some key losses to personnel. The selection of RB Beanie Wells in the first round also suggests that the team will be more committed to the run, so look for between 3,600-3,900 yards and 25-28 TDs.

2. Matt Hasselbeck

Hasselback suffered through a miserable 2008 season and missed a lot of time battling a lingering injury. He finished with just 1,200 yards and five TDs in seven games.

This year, he should be healthy once again, so now it’s a matter of getting back in sync with his receivers and quickly developing a rapport with T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Blessed with an extremely easy  schedule, look for another 3,000-yard season and 20 TDs.

3. Marc Bulger

Bulger suffered through a miserable 2008 campaign as well, at one point being benched by then head coach, Scott Linehan. He finished with a little more than 2,700 yards and 11 TDs.

And this year, a familiar face will no longer be there: Torry Holt, who was a salary cap casualty.

While second-year receiver Donnie Avery does provide promise, look for the Rams to rely heavily on the running game and for Bulger’s numbers to remain middle of the pack: 3,000 yards and 15-18 TDs.

4. Shaun Hill

In 2008, once the J.T. O’sullivan experiment came to an end, which also coincided with the firing of Mike Nolan, Hill came on and finished with more than 2,000 yards and 13 TDs in just eight games.

This year, he has even more firepower at the skill positions. The Niners used the 10th overall pick on Michael Crabtree. Second-year receiver Josh Morgan is raring to go, and there’s hope that Singletary will finally help Vernon Davis begin to realize his potential.

Look for Hill to throw for more than 2,750 yards and 18 TDs.

Draft Tip

Warner could be the fourth overall QB drafted, and gone by Round Four. Hasselbeck and Bulger are no longer considered quality fantasy starters and will fall past Round Eight. Hill, who could be a decent fantasy sleeper, will probably be around at the end, or as a waiver wire pick-up.

I will be interested to see if Warner can keep this thing going. He scared the crap out of me in the Super Bowl, and he's not a guy you can count out.

Matt Hasselbeck has never really impressed me - certainly nowhere near as much as he impressed Mike Holmgren. But the walrus was the NFL head coach and I am the guy making dumb comments, so there you go. TJ Housh is a very good receiver and should go a long way toward expanding the Seattle offense.

Hasselbeck isn't a QB that is meant to impress. He's an above-average player who has never been able to string together two great seasons in a row.

He did get 'em to a Super Bowl, so I have to give him credit for that. Although there was some running back who was instrumental in that as well, wasn't there?

At one point, Hasselbeck was a fantastic fantasy QB (he could get his stuff together this year if he's healthy). And SSR, what do you mean he hasn't been able to string together two great seasons. He threw for 3,000+ yards four straight seasons ('02-'05) and threw for 20+ TD's in three of those seasons. The record may not have been the best (he went 35-21 during that time) but that doesn't all fall on one guy. Hasselbeck did his part and had four solid seasons, making countless fantasy owners more than satisfied.

Oops. I almost forgot to mention Hasselbeck's 2007 season in which he threw for 3,966 yards and 28 TD's, completing 62.6% of his passes. Do you realize how close that is to a 4,000 yard season? Pretty damn close. Hasselbeck did his part. Where's the rest of the team?

The only thing that doesn't impress me with Matt is his vulnerability in the pocket and his inability to escape the rush, which are pretty much the same thing, in a way.

No way Warner gets close to 4,000 yards and 30 TDs at his age. He'll probably have a good season (in the ballpark of 3,000 and 20-25) but 4,000/30 is the type of season that you expect from a 31 year old star, not someone like Warner whose only 2 years younger than Favre. Even with the insane wr corps they have, Warner will regress from Elite to very good.

I won't count Warner out. He did just throw for 4,500+ and 30 TDs last year. I don't think he can match that, but I wouldn't say it's out of the question either.

That's the kind of thinking that took the league by suprise yet again. Warner is an extremely effective and dangerous QB. He remains at his high level because he's not going to break a hip!!! Your whole argument is about age, yes that does catch everyone at some point but come on you're better than that give me something more than that. here's some numbers for ya - 500+ yds. and 30+ td's. is about as close to money as you can get.

Not bad, Alex Smith may overtake Hill though.

Make sure not to overrate Hasselbeck, the organization would have been better off keeping Julian Peterson and drafting Michael Crabtree to complement Housh. This may come back to haunt the Seahawks for many years. But back to fantasy, with no real running game, and only the threat of Housh, and TE John Carlson this is no Arizona Cardinal offense. They're not horrible either, just buyer beware.
