It's a story you never want to hear. A story that would piss off any of those with a heart no matter how many times you hear of it. And yet, it continues to go on a alarming rate.

Assault.

On a woman.

James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the latest culprit of this as he was arrested after he allegedly beat a woman believed to be his girlfriend. Apparently, the woman locked herself in her room and Harrison broke through the door and proceeded to assault her leaving marks on her face.

This {in an unintended pun} is a slap in the face to the proud Pittsburgh Steeler organization who now has an unwanted and unneeded distraction to deal with involving one of their top defensive players.

I don't know about anybody on this website, but I'm getting pretty damn sick and tired of having to shake my head as I read that another athlete or anyone for that matter has assaulted a member of the opposite sex. It pains me to have to hear these stories because it will give credence to those who stereotype athletes based on these incidents. There are undoubtedly plenty of athletes who respect and love their women and treat them with the utmost regard. We probably won't know the full story to this latest incident and with a media that will sensationalize anything and anyone, that may be the best thing for all concerned.

But I DO KNOW that whatever happened sure as heck didn't have to come to THIS result. This end result is always avoidable. It's about damn time that athletes and all of us as men for that matter realize this.

Too bad James did not.

You really hope a guy who commits an act like this gets his ass kicked repeatedly when he goes to prison, where he belongs. And not just because he's a Steeler...

It sadly, doesn't matter.

Sports figures ESPECIALLY in the NFL, NBA, etc. are well above the law and get slapped with relatively light sentences.

In Guyana a guy was caught robbing a house and the neighbors kicked his ass and tied him to a flagpole. They don't wait for the police there.

Wish they could do that with Harrison.

Sadly, I must agree. The Steelers are a class organization, and they don't need garbage like this gumming up the works. This crap happens far too often with pro athletes. I hope he gets something more than a stern talking-to.

Price to pay in a civilized nation with law, order and the assumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.

Guyana, that's my mother's ancestry. With the current situation in Guyana, citizens have to take matters in their own hands due to corruption within the police department. We need that type of justice here when morons want to rape and sexually assault a woman, celebrity or not.

The ridiculous need of athletes to be "manly" is to blame. So many of these guys are so insecure about the masculinity (or they need to reinforce it) that they have to use violence as a way to prove its existence.

There's no wonder that the divorce rate is 50% and that relationships end because people are so willing to give up. It's because they're doomed from the start, because of the twisted views and expectations that people have of what a man is or should be and vice versa for women.

The number one reason for divorce is MONEY not egos or expectations.

It's a ridiculous need of men in general to be "manly" because society has a twisted definition of what a man is. It's portrayed on TV, movies and in videos. And then young men end up watching these videos and shows and these thoughts gets ingrained in their brains. Unfortunately, parents aren't holding up their end of the bargain due to the fact that they don't take these kids to the side and talk to them real or monitor what they watch. It's made more difficult by the current state of the economy which now has both parents working and not at the home. This is what drives this behavior.

This idea that men need to stop being manly is rediculous. Part of being a man is taking care of and protecting your family. smacking around your woman is not manly, it is cowardly. Harrison has no excuse for his actions, but don't act like being a man is wrong and we should all form some sort of androgenous society. You wouldn't want your girlfriend or wife to lose her femininity, so why would you want men to lose their masculinity?

Bravo, Dre-Lo, for your commentary. I find it amazing that on alot of message boards, a big thing was made for those players that were arrested for drug possession and/or drunk driving but not one mention of a player assaulting a woman.

Thanks. I just felt it had to be said. Some things can't and shouldn't be defended. Glad you appreciate it.

"It's about damn time that athletes and all of us as men for that matter realize this."

That is an unfair generalization.

Do some men abuse women? Sadly, yes. Do all? No.

I take great lengths in my article to explain that this does not all men. I apologize if I generalized in that statement. There are men that realize this, but you can't deny that most men need to realize this though.

Harrison joins the long list of players I will never be a fan of. Sadly this is one of the few hometown players I will have to dislike. I will be interested to see how he handles this. He already admitted to all of the allegations. I just wonder if it was because he felt guilty or if he just wants it to go away as soon as possible.
